Head averages 48.14 opening the batting for Australia. Given their crisis up top one suspects that he's going to get that gig soon enough unless someone else suddenly proves themselves. The question for us is - who replaces Crawley? He'll get one more Test but if fails yet again then we have to throw someone in there.
Can’t see Crawley being replaced even if he does poorly. They’ve gone ‘All In’ on him and yet again he’s failed to deliver.
People know that I have been saying for years that he is a flat track bully. Great when the ball is doing nothing but a "rabbit in headlights" otherwise. Last two tours with 52 runs in 8 innings says it all - it was Henry in NZ and it's Starc here. Technique is everything opening at the highest level.
  • Woke up. Heard Pope's name in commentary.

Thought that's good , we're only a couple of wickets down.

Only problem was he must have been fielding.

    And now this. Awful.

Absolutely shocking that’s the only way to describe our batting .. 9 wkts in a session .. Crawley Duckett Pope Brook and Smith all think it’s 20/20 out top 3 never get us to 100 .. the Aussies gave us a big chance to win this when we did not deserve anything but at 56/0 this could even be over today ???

Our line and length is shocking here.

Subpar bowling matches our batting pretty well though.

Feels like the best thing for Crawley would be to spend next summer with Kent just playing all formats. Go score 1000+ in the County Championship or something. I know the rest of the opening options can be clumped either into " promising but inexperienced" or " we know what they can do they've had their time" but I can't see how this run of form or lack thereof can be allowed to continue for this whole series.

Travis Head becoming this world class player is absolutely bizarre to me when he had one of the worst overseas stints I think I've ever seen for Sussex in 2021. Think he got one 50 all season.
I remember it but think you have to take that season in isolation. I've seen so many Aussies come over in top club cricket and playing three shots before the ball has arrived. One of them, the overseas at Bickley last season, is making his debut for Queensland today. It's why the likes of Head, Smith, Labuschagne do come over. For that experience. I bet Sussex would have Head back now.
  • Blooming heck.

I signed up for TNT Sports yesterday for a couple of months so I could watch the cricket.

Maybe I should cancel this morning.

Stokes has to come on in the next 2/3 overs or this’ll be done today.

We have plenty of middle order batsmen waiting for a chance to play for England.
Bethell and Jacks being prime examples.
Unfortunately we don't have the same when it comes to opening batsmen.
Crawley is a very lucky man in that respect

This has to be Crawley’s last game for England . I’ve been saying it for a few years now but for some reason they keep persevering with him . It’s like playing with a man down from the start .

Absolutely I'd have this Travis Head back at the top of the order for Sussex every day of the week. That 2021 season with the bizarre county championship format and only winning 1 game all season along with enough off the field stuff to rival a Roland season was a complete mess of a season.
  • The way the game had gone i thought 200 was a tough chase but Australia are doing this at a canter.

    What a weird test match

It got so bad for Head that season that I recall him playing against Kent 2s!!!

Stokes getting spanked now too. Christ were a poor batting side.
  • Four 4s in 5 balls for Head. Great batting.

Time for me to give up.

Please not more disappointment at lunch time.

The Test will probably be over in little over 2 days.
    Plenty of time to rest.

The sad part is, I’d still not fancy us to win it if we were in the Aussies position.
  • Amazing how frequently they are finding the boundary. We seemed to be scrabbling 3s a lot of the time

The demise of Dad's Army has been somewhat prematurely reported. They will have to make some serious changes, especially in the seam department, before the next Ashes but this isn't a series too far for them as a unit. They will thrive on the adrenaline of success and the only way we are going to turn this around is by winning the next Test and put them under even more pressure.
  • At least I managed to avoid being persuaded by a friend to fly out for this game.

I fear England's batting is being slightly overrated in this thread
Hate to say I told you so. My only regret is the 'slightly' but we'll put that down to deliberate understatement

Yeah that happened! Dropped to the 2s to try and get in any kind of nick.

All over in 2 days. Not a good look for the ashes
