I guess we’ll find out one way or another, as either he’ll step up or a Championship club with make a big money offer if they read the ratings.
Will we find out one way or another? - A club can make a bid for him, which they'll no doubt make in private, but even if we stay in League One, we're in no obligation to sell
It will surely be a big bid if he is a genuine Championship level midfielder, so you imagine the club would accept it. Especially if he wanted to make the step up.

People can’t have their cake and eat it!
Would they...? - When they've already turned down bids for the likes of Jones, Campbell and Leaburn in recent times... Maybe we're not such mugs like we are when it comes to selling players anymore... How would you know.

Im glad you conveniently skirted over the fact that I pointed out that a Championship club tried to sign him (Sheffield Wednesday) right before he joined us.
I think cos you said that in your head mate! I thought they pulled out of the deal.

There is a place in between where he can be a solid lower Championship player, a good L1 midfielder, but not someone a club will bid several million for.
Fair point. But you’re still looking at a seven figure bid & the fact that a club like QPR (for example) would be interested.

Wot... Look back at 7:57pm on the last page?

Yes... They pulled out, but dont think the Manager was overly happy about it.

Collapse of Sheffield Wednesday's Conor Coventry transfer examined - Danny Röhl's stance

It is believed there are a number of factors at play in the collapse of mutual interest between Wednesday and the Republic of Ireland under-21 midfielder, including a preference on the player's part to stay in London, promises of more frequent playing time by Charlton and the League One club's willingness to offer West Ham a higher sell-on percentage as part of their transfer package.

So Wednesday WANTED him... We just offered him a better deal

They’re a great example. They paid around £2m for Bonne.

Lightweight players don't get these kind of numbers either 👍🏻

Interesting that one of the other rumoured players we are interested in is the No.5 Bradley Ibrahim... Good pedigree having come through the Arsenal academy.

Type of signing that would fit in with the new Under 21/23 scouting role looking for hidden gems.
Yeah I like the sound. Even more so looking at that list though is Harvey Knibbs. Tall, strong, technical and can clearly get stuck in. I think he'd be a dream player for Nathan Jones.
Now they've got their new ownership I don't think they'll be losing their players on the cheap anymore. We should've gone after him and Smith (again) in the January window when the other nutcase was still asleep at the wheel!

Getting 2M for Smith definitely wasn’t losing him on the cheap. Football fees are just getting far too big these days. All for spending money but I’d rather chuck a couple hundred thousand and a good wage on a very good free agent like an Odoffin to guarantee his signature then spend 1-2M to get a player of equal quality

Andy Woodman's goalkeeper son Freddie has been released by Preston (as has Paddy Bauer)
A player I really like (might have suffered nasty injury though), Murray Wallace has been released by Millwall .. Woodman is 28, Wallace32, the later as a versatile, VERY good defender would be a perfect squad member covering central and left sided defence

In fact there is a host of 30 somethings now 'on the market' after being released from Champ clubs.
I don't go for the 'too old' theory. Look at Godden and Berry and the integral parts they played for us this season (with 1 game to go)

Reckon Wallace will join Neil Harris at Cambridge United.

Woodman is going to Man United as a 3rd choice keeper. Also doubt arguably a Millwall legend will join us as it won’t go down well with either fanbase. If we’re looking for a left sided defender, Ciaran Brown out of contract at Oxford  in his prime and won their POTY 2 seasons in a row and actually a club we can better in wages if we do go up.
  • Alan McLeary joined us after over 300 games for Millwall.
  • JRS told.he can leave Palace.

Doubt he would have the physicality and relentlessness of a Jones player even if he was in our price range though.
  • JRS feels like a Southampton signing. Don't have many options wide , think Palace will want a rather significant fee.
  • We would definitely be priced out of a move for him even if we were interested in him which we probably won’t be because of his profile.
  • I can see him joining any of the top 10 of the championship/one of the relegated Prem teams

I'm sure Jones could figure it out, and with JRS having his best time here, I think he'd be open to a move if the price was right.

If we went up, I'd love him back. Quality player.
Probably as we're in League One, doesn't seem to have worked for him in the Championship.

If we look at the current squad, my take on who is good enough is as follows:

    Mannion - No.
    Maynard Brewer - No.
    Ramsey - Yes
    Asiimwe - No.
    Edwards - Yes
    Jones - Yes
    A Mitchell - Unsure
    Z Mitchell - Unsure
    Gillesphey - Yes
    Small - Yes
    Campbell - Yes
    Coventry - Yes
    Anderson - Not quite
    Berry - Yes
    Docherty - Unsure
    Taylor - Not quite
    Ahadme - Hell No.
Leaburn - If he can get and stay fit
    Dixon - not quite.
    Godden - YES
    Hylton - No.
Kanu - Not quite (but Karlan shone at this level after looking well out of place in his first few seasons)

Obviously we have loanees and retirees and other out of contract players, but none of the rest really felt worth a mention.

All about opinions, but, if you’re talking about being good enough as first team Championship regulars in a team that steers clear of relegation places. Being brutal…

    Mannion - No.
    Maynard Brewer - No.
    Ramsey - Yes
    Asiimwe - No.
    Edwards - Yes
    Jones - No
    A Mitchell - No
    Z Mitchell - No
    Gillesphey - No
    Small - Yes
    Campbell - Yes
    Coventry - No
    Anderson - No
    Berry - No
    Docherty - No
    Taylor - No
    Ahadme - No
    Leaburn - who knows
    Dixon - No
    Godden - No
    Hylton - No
    Kanu - No
Very harsh on players like Jones and Coventry who I think will step up comfortably. They’ve played huge parts in our excellent defensive record this season. Improve central midfield and up front and that’ll take a lot pressure off them too.

But let’s get to the Championship first.
Jones I accept could prove me wrong. Coventry just seems too lightweight (only imo).
Being able to run for 90 minutes and cover every blade of grass is elite physicality
Elite physicality helps, but Coventry is also top in league 1 for tackles made.
Coventry can step up without a doubt.
Our whole back line can step up too although Gilesphy would probably need to drop to the bench.
  • He may have struggled in his season in the Championship but it was his first. Still time to learn and become more consistent.

Interesting how football changes because 50 years ago the biggest Millwall legend of them all Harry Cripps was an integral part of a Charlton promotion squad.
The rivalry isn’t hate filled enough for it to be a problem… as demonstrated by all the examples mentioned. Millwall would have been very happy to employ Curbs in his prime post Charlton. They took Seed, after all, the man that turned Charlton from Third Division (South) strugglers into title contenders.
  • Zero chance of us getting JRS back even in the Championship, Palace will want £5-10m for him and no chance of us spending that on a player.
