  • No chance of us getting Kone imo. Personally not keen anyway, absolute little prick in those semi final games and has been found out against teams that can defend.
I agree we won't get him as the fee Wycombe will want is likely to be above our budget but i wouldn't read too much into his end of season form. Their whole team fell off when Dodds came in, and they only won 7 of 20 games.

When Bloomfield was there he scored against us, Stockport and Wrexham, plus against Swansea and Villa in the cup.

    Agree.
Hoping it has reduced interest and the price!
  • Would still be pleased if we brought in an experienced senior GK but in the last year I think Mannion has improved perhaps enough to convince Jones that he’s good enough to be No 1 at a Championship club. I’m not at all sure that’s the case with AMB who we would need to rely on if Mannion got an injury.  On that basis I still think we need to bring in a GK who is at least as good if not better than Mannion.
I found it interesting yesterday that my stepdad highlighted Mannion.

He's a Norwich City season ticket holder and he was asking how many players he thinks we will keep and said "for instance I wonder if you'll keep that keeper of yours Mannion, he's better than anyone we have at Norwich so I imagine he will have championship interest."

He watched all 3 play-off games rooting for us and Mannion really impressed him.
Norwich can have him for 5m.

I rate him as keeper, best we have had in years!
I also think he’s very good. Calm, consistent. Not massively agile but I like him

Better than Angus Gunn? I'm not sure about that

Wouldn’t say he really had a save to make in those games due to the defence. That said he commanded his box very well, particularly the last 10-15 mins in the final which really took the pressure off.

I still feel he is a bit suspect as a shot stopper and a hybrid of AMB’s shot stopping and Mannion’s command of area would make for a great keeper at this level.

Hopefully we go for an experienced #1 for Mannion to compete with and learn from.
  • Worth remembering that we have a very good GK coach now. Mannion will only improve.

Well Gunn has left so at the momemt he probably is better than anything they have.

Pretty surprised they released him. Born in Norwich, Norwich fan, his dad is a Norwich legend and he's a current international goalkeeper.

Maybe his wages were too high, as i can't think why else they wouldn't have offered him a new deal.

I think it unlikely we sign another young GK with Tommy Reid having signed. He was on our bench several times this season and is apparently training with the first team.
    England youth international.
I think we are more likely to bring in an experienced keeper to help bring on the youngsters.

From the little I have seen of Tommy Reid I rate highly, maybe a loan for first team football would be good for him next season although at 20yrs old and a keeper that may mean NL level I guess (not bad as if local he could still then train with us).

I think we should go for the best keeper within our budget whether they are young or old though.  Seems a fair amount of noise around Wickens who looked excellent against us.  He is only 23 but I would be very happy with him signing from the little I saw of him.

Mannion is good but as said on here, his command of the area is top notch but he is not the best shot stopper and we will have more shots against next year.

It can't be underestimated how his calmness is felt by the defence in front of him.

Surprised by the praise of Gunn on here, he’s always seemed quite flappy to me with the hand strength of Simon Church’s right foot. I think he’s quite vocal and his positioning and presence is strong, but don’t see him as an upgrade on Mannion.

If you mean Big Craig, Woollacott, AMB and Isted, then I agree .  He’s benefitted from having a proper defensive structure in front of him - even AMB wasn’t bad this year .
  • I think it’s actually quite hard to judge Mannion’s quality as he had a fantastic defence and defensive midfield (which is being forgotten in a lot of the discussion) ahead of him. We’ve rarely seen him in one on one situations or needing to make quick reaction saves. A lot of the goals that have gone in against him have been long range strikes through crowds of bodies. He also hasn’t been pressed as much as he will be next year so it’s hard to judge that too. The biggest error he made was the Ramsay back pass and that clearly knocked his confidence for the rest of the game which is an issue. I don’t think we’ll actually know how good he is until next season when he will be facing more challenges, if he keeps the (metaphorical) no 1 shirt

  • Think it’s smart if we sign another keeper just to be safe. We haven’t seen Mannion have consistent shots to know if he’s a decent enough shot stopper also only played half a season so we would need another keeper as well because he’s also an injury risk
  • I'd have no issues with Mannion as our No 1 next season - money can be better spent elsewhere I think, although I do think we need another keeper, don't rate AMB enough to compete
That's the point I think - AMB isn't good enough so should be sold, so we need another keeper.

We should be aiming to get a better keeper than Mannion rather than just a back-up, as constant improvement is important.  If we try that and Mannion then proves the better of the two and carries on improving, great.

He’s signed until “at least” 2026

Mulligan sounds like a typical jones signing from what I’ve read but it’s definitely a pity Rangers are in the mix. Hard to think a Scots lad not wanting to play for one of the big two in The SPL given the opportunity.
    Celtic fan though apparently.

That's not always a barrier to signing for Rangers, though.
That’s good news because I think it would be very difficult to sign for Rangers as a Celtic fan.
Wrong, there have been plenty, and visa versa, our very own Jim Melrose being one, big bluenose, played for Celtic. Neill Mcann ex rangers player, currently or was part of Barry Fergusons coaching team recently, Celtic fan.
Kenny Miller, played for both and I think was a Rangers fan too?
