and they must have been playing it because it was the Friday of a Bank Holiday weekend. Technically I answered my own question in the end, but it was one of the songs mentioned in Stig's long list of Sixties Number Ones on the first page - so I guess Big Rob better get ready to eat his van :)

So, you found it on your own after I'd suggested it ;-)

That's a pretty good tune actually. Better than that Bonnie and Clyde number that I always associate him with.

I would say though that it's far more exciting when Melt Banana is played over the top of it.

Well done, wouldn't have got to him for some time myself. It's been good listening to a lot of stuff I haven't heard for years and have actually ordered a couple of Ronnie Lane/Slim Chance cds off e-bay as I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed his music back in the day.
  • Its a "bassoon" not a bass you muppet !

    ;-)
  • Actually I think it's a saxophone.
  • Ah...could be. Sorry.

For a start it turns out that the answer perfectly fits oaksters question, for a second we would have certainly got it in time. Shame it's over tho' the search was a good un.
Which suggestion was the closest second place?

    You and me both, March
Been digging out loads of great stuff on this quest and going off on all sorts of tangents.
    Ronnie Lane was one
In my own time - Family
    Night Flight - Pentangle
Meet me on the corner - Lindisfarne
Ice in the sun - Quo
    Tonight - The Move
    The Universal - Small Faces
    Paper Sun - Traffic
    and million others.

I protest Oaky - telling us a brass instrument was a fuzz bass, Pfftt!

Wouldn't have guessed Georgie Fame though

LOL - apologies. I was dreading finding the song, as my original recollection could have been miles out!

It was No.1 the week we West Ham won the World Cup in 1966 by the way....

So the "ships horn" is actually a saxaphone?

Nevermind, just glad you got it in the end - or rather Stig got it!
