Please tell us how many times has Crystal Palace have been in administration in the passed 20 years.matt_himself said:
What complete and utter bullshit. You left the Valley because you couldn't pay the bills. Simple as. 4,000 a week isn't going to do that.Airman Brown said:There isn't a shadow of doubt that Ron Noades was one of the prime movers in Charlton leaving The Valley in 1985 and that had Noades not been in the mix we would have played in the old First Division at The Valley in the 1980s. There were lots of issues and John Fryer was another of them, but Noades was absolutely key. That is why we blame Palace.
Alter history I your own mind as you wish but the rest of us know the truth.

I am pretty certain that Matt wasn't born before 1985.
In view of this it would be far more adult to ignore him.
Don't lower yourselves to tit for tat nonsense.

And you are a twat, because all I am doing is asking a question. For what its worth I don't have a huge issue with palace and I still have no idea why we call you the nigels.matt_himself said:

Remember this is a club who have 'forced' a rivalry with Brighton, just so they can have a day at the seaside with their carers.
All football clubs have an identity, which they (mostly) should be proud off, but The Nigels just dont have an identity, unless being 'grey' is an identity. Even though they are a league above us, I actually feel sorry for them, I really do.
You are laughable.0 -
Yep, Valley Grove turnstiles. Getting my roads mixed up! No problem with Harvey Gardens . . .Six-a-bag-of-nuts said:
That's interesting, thank you.Airman Brown said:
The two acres and the Harvey Gardens turnstiles are the same issue. There were various discussions about selling bits of land, including as part of the funding for the return, but the turnstiles themselves were never material, as subsequent development has shown. Speaking to both Mike Norris (who I was told by a reliable source as far back as 1987 had always opposed the move) and Derek Ufton in the last year, they both tell the same story of Fryer conniving with Noades. Remember that Charlton played Palace at The Valley on August 20th, 1985, with the East Terrace closed and again on September 3rd at Selhurst Park, four days before the move was announced. It's not a coincidence.Six-a-bag-of-nuts said:

I think it's a certainty. He plotted the move with Fryer and they then assembled the issues as justification. I am not saying that there weren't problems to overcome at The Valley, but without Noades the club would have found a way round them. Note that the reasons given for moving out - loss of home Harvey Gardens turnstiles and closure of East Terrace - applied in exactly the same way when we came back and continued to do so until the east stand opened in 1994. The Harvey Gardens turnstile issue exists to this day and the club even sold off the land fronting Harvey Gardens when it came back.stonemuse said:
So if not for him we may not have moved?Airman Brown said:There isn't a shadow of doubt that Ron Noades was one of the prime movers in Charlton leaving The Valley in 1985 and that had Noades not been in the mix we would have played in the old First Division at The Valley in the 1980s. Did they not also cite an issue with Gliksten's supposed plans to utilise his 2 acres that were excluded from the lease? Would this have included the then Valley Grove turnstiles?
Is there any recorded evidence (quotes) of Fryer's connivance with Noades? (I know it was commonly believed)
I always thought (mistakenly it appears) that the 2 acres was based at the rear of the West Stand car park butting onto or including the Valley Grove turnstiles.

A lot of comments on here smack of sour grapes and wilful self-delusion that do no more than shovel more oversized shoes and red noses on the clown bonfire.
Two small SE London clubs - Selhurst Park is in SE25,a London postcode not a Surrey one - whose supporters have more in common than most on here are comfortable with.-4 -
"Nigels" comes from them being stereotyped as largely boring, ignorant, fake, faceless, Surrey wankers. Shatt seems to fit the bill rather well.drewman said:

Here you go @drewman , Nigel in Eastenders as taken from a Nigel's fans' forum;drewman said:

I remember Nigel on Eastenders asking Phil and Grant if they wanted to come round and watch Palace videos.
He was a right wet lettuce, a bit like Shatt himself.1 -

Wilful self-delusion? That is an absolutely meaningless thing for you to write. We know who we are for a start, we know our history, and we know our potential.
Was it not a Chrystal Palace fan who suggested that now you are a 'big club' (!!!????) you need to choose, choose for gods sake, bigger rivals?
Incidentally have any of you paused to consider what rivalry actually means if it means anything at all? To be honest every team we play are rivals when we're playing them, and if another club locally is doing well or badly it is about the financial impact it might or might not have on us because of the size of attendances.
I fear it is the Chrystal Palace fans who are the ones obsessed with rivalry, rather like somebody having an obsession with the possible impending need for phalloplasty surgery.

Isn't that a bit pointless seeing as we ourselves have since been relegated and they are now back in the premiership and we are not?RedRooster said:So can we get a banner saying WE SENT THE PALACE DOWN or not?

You fucked yourselves and blamed everyone else for you failing.
Pathetic.
Think about what you are saying.
If low crowds were the problem, why would moving to Selhurst Park be the solution - where even less of out supporters would be prepared to go.
Our pitiful average of 5104 in our last full season at the Valley was bettered but hardly trounced by Palace's average or 6440 for the same season. (same division)
Football crowds generally were low during this period
Charlton had been saved by bankruptcy the previous year 1984 and the new owners were hardly short of a few bob.
We knew anyway that the crowds would return if we achieved success on the pitch, which was proved subsequently at Selhurst, but only a fraction of the increase we would have got at the Valley
You need to research your history, not swallow the crap discharged by people like Simon Jordan1 -
Come on FOD, he's doing his best. He's been doing his homework all day ready for school next week so little Matthew is rather tired .0

He hates Charlton so much he's been a member on this site since 2007... What a utter Nigel...

Couple of points I've always struggled with during the Fryer tenure.
He wasn't a particularly rich man by any means. However, he was a Charlton fanatic and absolutely loathed Palace.
He also wasn't stupid, so how he got into bed with Noades remains a mystery to me.
I also partially agree with Redskin. Of all the fans in the country, the Palace ones generally are the most similar to us in their lifestyles and outlooks. We're from the same area and none of our fans are what you can really call glory hunters.
I'd rather spent have a pint or two with a Surrey supporting Nigel than a South London United fan.
Matt Up himself however is a complete and absolute wanker.

As i live just six miles from Selhurst Park up in the clean air on a hill in Surrey,
i wonder if this Banter should stop ?
NO thought not.
Can i just say that i have a Mate called Bruce who comes from the land down under and he said to me recently in Earls court.
"LISTEN in OZ, Nigel is a colloquial term for a social Fucking misfit and friendless person, now get off that Fruit box and get your round in
Sam you Pommie bar steward"
Thanks Bruce for clearing that up.
And sorry for Bruce's language but it would have lost it's Resonance if i had watered it down.0 -
Careful. He will turn on you with incisive wit and withering put downs... You have been warned!Addickted said:Couple of points I've always struggled with during the Fryer tenure.

I make @Airman Brown absolutely right and we have some very interesting black and white proof in the museum about Ron Noades plans, I wonder how Matt_ would have liked watching his team at Selhurst Valley, a very genuine proposal from MrNoades as part of the deal (and one he soon withdrew once we were there).0
