If your journey is 10 miles or less and you're reasonably fit or able to become reasonably fit you should cycle.

Way less stress. Costs less. You get fit or fitter. No brainer to me.

You cycled along the Old Kent Road or round central London in rush hour? Did it for 6 months - buses, lorries, idiot road rage drivers. No fun at all, and certainly not stress free. Fair play to those that do it, not for me though. At least I feel safe when I'm squashed against the window on a stationary train an hour after I should have arrived at work.
I have cycled that way before. I'm totally committed to cycling so perhaps I didn't take on board what you experienced.
Currently I cycle Plumstead to Hackney. Either through the foot tunnel at Woolwich and then on the Greenway from Beckton to Victoria Park or through the Greenwich foot tunnel up to Hackney.
Either way is 15 minutes quicker than public transport and a cheap way to get fit.
I think it's a mindset thing. Either you decide to cope with awful trains or awful drivers. And I choose the cycling.

My mate has only been knocked off his bike 3 times in 10 years. New Cross Road, Fiveways and Hayes Lane, Bromley.

Generally speaking I think you make your own luck when it comes to being knocked off your bike. Even when it's not your fault, spotting when someone might be an idiot is probably the most important thing I've learned. Obviously some cases it's completely unavoidable and just wrong place at the wrong time.

I've seen so many pedestrians just walk right out in front of cyclists whilst glued to their phones that I certainly wouldn't want to cycle to work myself. Not to mention the HGV's, idiot drivers etc.

Not as unlucky as my mum who was knocked off and leg run over by a lorry turning left (@1950).

I have for about a year now (Eltham to Waterloo), and fingers crossed nothing has happened to me yet. I find the traffic tends to go to slow far to ever cause any real alarm, and drivers on the whole tend to be cautious around cyclists. That being said I have seen a couple of cyclists who must have been hit, and my mates Dad got knocked off his bike in the cycle lane in Rochester Way recently so it certainly can happen.

Then again I have seen people pass out on the train as it has been to busy so who knows.

I know I shouldn't moan about trivial stuff when there's horror all around us but I just can't stop myself. Soaked walking to the station to find trains delayed out of dartford because of a broken down train". Can barely get to the platform as poor little darlings who are afraid of the rain are standing down both sides of the stairwells. Eventually get on my delayed train to be informed that the reason for the delay is a "fallen tree just outside dartford". I can see how they can confuse that with a broken train. I really can. Now someone who smells like he's slept in an ashhtray has just sat beside me and no one will open a window cos it's raining.

Oh and guess what? THE F#####G HEATING IS ON!!!!!!!!!!

    And breath............

    Have a nice day y'all

The obstruction on the line is at Albany Park apparently. Failing to understand why everything's fucked, on every line. Tossers.

There's a power supply problem as well. So basically it's rained a bit and now everything's broken. Pathetic.

I would suggest it's because London bound trains then back up into Dartford causing a bottle neck.

Needs more debate on this forum. :-)

I'm on the bexleyheath line. Apparentkyvthe fallen tee is between blackheath and Lewisham. We've just sat in the tunnel outside blackheath for half an hour. An hour and ten minutes into the journey and not reached Lewisham. The fun just never starts.

Done me a favour though. Was absolutely soaked to ththe bone after school run (walk) where umbrella lasted a grand total of 20 seconds. Had to go home and change everything, even my pants were soaked through (and I've not been drinking!)

Don't forget to claim your £1.75 Delay Repay compensation, Callum. That'll make everything alright again!

Took one look at the weather and decided not to cycle. Train took an hour and 40 minutes.

Next time, even if it's a hurricane, I'm cycling. Fuck South Eastern.

Statistically, there is a 92.6% probability that Southeastern Trains will fuck up when you absolutely have to be somewhere on time.

I wouldn't worry though, 85.2% of all statistics are just made up anyway!

Was 29 minutes late for my fast track passport appointment due to this scums inability to get me to London in under 1hr 30m. If I'd been a minute later they wouldn't of been able to process my passport renewal and I'd have lost £100. Don't hate any company more than these jokers.

So now it's "a number of trees", even though they only mentioned one when they were failing to get me to work this morning. But then "one" is still "a number" isn't it, you sly tossers?

Gonna be rubbish on the way home this evening, guaranteed.

Stephen Hawking could move that 'tree' off the line.

My gran could have lifted that tree/twig off the line. Why have they tweeted a picture of two gormless members of staff staring bewildered at a small piece of foliage, just pick it up and move it!
  • Does it really take two blokes to move that FFS? The driver could have got out and moved that himself and been on his way in about 30 seconds.
