    Bring back Hales to open, scores runs quickly so allows Cook to play slow and steady.

    It gives us a left and right handed opening pair, Stoneman at 3, Root at 4.

    Send Jennings back to Durham before his confidence is shot to pieces, drop Ballance as he just isn't good enough.

    sorry, I thought you meant Rashid come in instead of Dawson. I agree with you regarding 2nd spin option, Rashid is not great but probably the 2nd best we have at the minute.

    We did win the first test so perhaps no need to overreact. But certainly no need for Dawson and obvious questions over Jennings and Ballance.

    Jennings looks like rabbit caught up in headlights, Dawson isn't destructive enough and I would fancy playing against him. A few tweaks here and there and we shall be ok. Isn't it time to give Northeast a chance.

    Hales is not the answer. He is not even a First Class opener let alone a Test one. Better bowlers with more attacking fielders will always undo his technique.

    Stoneman might be a good call though.

    That was a terrible S Africa performance though, they were really missing their captain and looked rudderless. They now look in a real groove and have a refreshed and no doubt super pumped Rabada to come back

    I think the chicken that are 20/20 & the IPL have finally come home to roost. Atherton would never get in a 20/20 squad but did a great job at Centurian about 25 years ago to save a Test match, We need the same today but too many players are now too wrapped up in the 20 over logic.

    There was some good bowling today & a couple of batsmen got unplayable deliveries, but in general there were too many "airy fairy" shots. I also think that once we were 5 down they knew it was up (if they ever thought they had a chance in the first place) and just didn't bother.

    Had a great day yesterday...just a shame about the cricket!
    First time at Trent bridge and thought it was a lovely little ground.
    Crowd were top notch. We were sat near bloke dressed as Donald Trump. Bloke sat next to him had a 'brickwall' suit on. And the rest of the group were dressed a Mexicans!

    true enough but then you kind of support my point. Because South Africa lost and didn't seem to massively overreact. I am not saying we should give people unlimited chances, I think the selection of both Ballance and Dawson has been poor, but also sometimes one defeat does not mean we have to panic.

    Suggestions are that Balance will be given until the end of the series to make some runs - he has been getting in but not motoring on , and currently has an average of 27 in this series, and apparently is third highest scorer in the top 6, however, it looks like Stoneman or maybe Malan may come in for Jennings, with further suggestions that Ballance may be moved to 5 and Bairstow to 7 . Dawsons place looks untenable, despite the next Test being at the Oval which tends to spin more than elsewhere.

    Think Woakes is out for the whole series, we should go with something like
    Cook, Stoneman, Malan, Root, Ballance, Bairstow, Stokes, Ali, Broad, Jimmy, Wood or other seamer if he's injured

    Balance *might* have a broken finger, x-rays today.
    Wood, im not surprised if he does have an injury, as his body cant seem to stand up to the rigours of back-to-back Test.
    Woakes apparently isn't fit until Windies.

    Having 2 divisions doesn't help either, as half the available players are playing a lower level of cricket, so their averages have a big question mark over them. Joe Denly for example is having a great summer, but in Div 2, so unlikely to be considered

    Exactly, and Sam N-E over the past few years has been flying but is constantly overlooked.

    Agree, but the boy looked a natural in the T20, I know the form is not considered to be an amazing benchmark but he looked to have something.

    Stoneman is an obvious candidate, so with him and Malan, leaves one. I am not totally against giving Ballance another try, but move him down to 5. Another option is to keep Bairstow at 5, and bring in someone like Buttler for Dawson at 7/8.

    Of course, one name that could come back into contention is James Vince, though not having a cracking season in champs this season.

    I didn't realise that he was 30. Shame that Hameed is having a shocker this season as he would solve a problem at the top of the order.

    I will be particularly annoyed if we move Bairstow to 7 just to accommodate Ballance. Root and Bairstow (and stokes) will be the backbone of our middle order for years to come. Let them settle into their positions at 4 and 5 and pick the best players in the positions to fit around them. There is no point having Ballance at 7 so it's either 3 or drop him. If they are worried about Bairstows workload with keeping and batting 5 then the obvious solution is to bring in a keeper that is also used to batting 6/7 and is suited to that role. Alternatively if they want 2 spinners then Rashid is an option - bats 6 for Yorkshire or Patel who is having a great year with the bat. Both of them turn the ball the other way.

    Cook Stoneman Someone Root Bairstow Stokes Foakes Ali Woakes (when fit until then Ball TRJ or Wood) Broad Anderson.

    Seems like that someone may be Malan. A year ago it would have been Borthwick but his form has dropped off a cliff for Surrey.
