So why did you? Knott far better keeper than Gilchrist and with that batting you don't need his runs. Plus you have 4 top quicks plus useful seam back up from Waugh, Gooch and Chappell so rather unbalanced. Drop a quickie for Deadly.Addick Addict said:Based on players seen only (and much as it hurts to leave Knotty and Deadly Derek out):
Gooch
Cook
Gower

S Waugh
Botham
Gilchrist
Warne
Lillee
McGrath
Thompson
Or did you just not want to be too similar to me? ;-)0 -
Yeah, I would have gone with Knotty instead of Gilchrist.0

The name you all seem to have forgotten is Sajid Mahmood4

English 11 only, seen only
Gooch
Cook
Vaughan
Gower
Pieterson
Greig
Knott
Flintoff
Botham
Underwood
Anderson
Okay maybe too many all rounders but fun to watch and you could play with the batting order. Vaughan as captain would take care of egos, 8 England Captains in one dressing room.0 -
An English eleven, based on who I've seen...
Gooch
Cook
Gower
Vaughan
Thorpe
Botham
Knott
Flintoff or Stokes
Swann
Anderson
Harmison/Underwood/Willis depending on the pitch

As if! I went for Gilchrist because, as much as Knotty was the better keeper, it was the Aussie who was the explosive batsman who changed/reinforced the course of so many Tests. Having also decided to omit Deadly (effectively turning the ball away from the right hander a la Warne and concerned that he would on a lot of pitches just be there to hold one end up), it was logical that we wouldn't lose much in the keeping department as Gilchrist kept to Warne throughout his career - which Knotty didn't.Riviera said:

I wonder how effective Deadly would be in modern conditions. A lot of his wickets were taken on damp, uncovered pitches, while his relentless line and length (and medium pace) would be less of a challenge to modern day batsmen, used to smacking length balls in white ball cricket1

Cook

Vaughan (c)
Root
KP
Bell
Prior
Fred
Swan
Broad
Anderson
English only and from players I have seen.1 -
As it's Movember how about a moustached Ashes XI. The only spot I couldn't fill was the spinner. Any ideas?
Gooch
Warner
Boon
Border
Lamb
Smith (Robin)
Botham
Russell
Merv
Johnson
Lillee

If I was pushed into picking a combined xi unfortunately it would be:
Hayden
Cook
Puntter
Waugh m
Waugh s
KP
Gilly

Could have Monty or Mo if your allowing beards. Could be one heck of a piss up in that dressing room.( with Monty around that could be literal)SantaClaus said:As it's Movember how about a moustached Ashes XI. The only spot I couldn't fill was the spinner. Any ideas?

Didn't KP sport a "mo" for the start of an ashes tour?0

Deadly was a very effective one day bowler too.killerandflash said:I wonder how effective Deadly would be in modern conditions. I'm confident he'd be an effective bowler today. His unrelenting accuracy would expose deficiencies in the techniques of those seeking to get after him.
Stevens is not so much quicker than Deadly was and he does ok.0 -
Seeing I’m a bit on the round side, you could have a tubby combined England/Australia Test 11
Taylor
Boon
Cowdrey
Gatting
Lehmann
Samit
Botham (in his later years only and I’m scratching a bit here)
Warne
Hughes
Gough (possibly a bit harsh)
Ormond
Anybody think of a wicky, they tend to be on the slighter side, at the moment I’m sticking the pads on Boon. Another team that could hammer a few beers

Rodney Marsh was a real lump in his early days, up to 1977 ish.addickfanatic said:Seeing I’m a bit on the round side, you could have a tubby combined England/Australia Test 11

Thanks to Riviera & killerandflash but I'm going for an old school selection Wilfred Rhodes (way too much time on my hands).0

The late Colin Millburn would walk into that team.addickfanatic said:Seeing I’m a bit on the round side, you could have a tubby combined England/Australia Test 11

His height could have been an asset on decent (i.e. bouncy) Aussie pitches. Really depends who is fit/selected to play alongside Anderson/Broad. A fit, firing Wood is our best option.killerandflash said:

Flintoff was a fat bastard during his early England career.0

My team from the BBC's options:
Hutton
Sutcliffe
Bradman
Barrington
Steve Waugh
Miller
Knott
Warne
Larwood
Lillee
Thomson
Wanted to pick Deadly but how can you leave Warne out?

Not going to poop the Surrey thread party, but Curran T is a fairly mundane fast-medium seamer who can bat a bit. Aussies won't be quaking. But then, I guess, who was there? I might have thrown a surprise and gone with Jack Leach, but if it's a quick bowler...Plunkett? I don't know. I mean, I could get on my Worcs high-horse again and point out our own young quick who took a bagful last season. There's not much top talent around in batting or bowling ffs0
-
Oh, except Dan Lawrence. It'll seem ridiculous he wasn't on this tour in two years when he and Root are the hub of our batting1
