Easy to do it when there is nothing to play for. Its like finally winning a game when you're already relegated.0

Don't give them that credit yet. We haven't batted yet!golfaddick said:Easy to do it when there is nothing to play for. Its like finally winning a game when you're already relegated.
Fully expecting to be seven down by the close.0 -
Aussie lost last 5 wickets for 13 runs, how very English!3

We all know that Golfie, of course its too little too late and all that but even someone as GHE as you must still enjoy Aussies getting out regardless of the state of the series.golfaddick said:Easy to do it when there is nothing to play for. I was in Sydney in 2003 when England were 4-0 down in the series but managed to win that final test. The atmosphere among the England fans was great and the players were celebrating afterwards like they had won the series (I was in the Members' Pavilion and watched the celebrations outside the dressing rooms). Many times I've watched the final Test at The Oval when the series was already won by one side or another but I was still urging England to win and crowds aren't any lower because the series is over. I think 88,000 at the MCG have proven that.golfaddick said:Easy to do it when there is nothing to play for. Its like finally winning a game when you're already relegated.
Individual Tests are important.

Leave it to cook and broad to deliver career lengthening performances now the series is lost5

England's day. 67-7 with the ball and 192-2 with the bat.
Delighted that Cook and Broad are playing well because every Ashes test match matters.
192-2 at the close.
Cook 104*
Root 49*
Trail by 135.1 -
The Ashes are gone but the convicts are such terrible winners nobody wants another 5-0 series.9

The rookies have performed as well as expected on this tour it has been the senior pros who have underperformed.
Today that all changed with broad and then cook puting on their best performance so far
It's such a shame they couldn't have done it earlier2 -
Not sure about that.blackpool72 said:The rookies have performed as well as expected on this tour it has been the senior pros who have underperformed.

What are Vince and Stoneman averaging - 25 probably. Not good enough for top 3 batsman.
What are Overton and Ball averaging? Not sure it's anywhere good enough.
Aside from Malan, Bairstow and possibly Anderson I'm not sure anyone has done themselves justice.0 -
I think a lot of it has to do with the pitch, which suits us better0

Yes but the rookies tend to feed of the senior pros.jamescafc said:

In my opinion the three players who have underperformed the most this series are
Cook
Broad
Ali
Had these three performed like they were expected to we would not be three down in the series0 -
Root has been well below his own standards too.blackpool72 said:

We can't have it both ways - lose 5-0 and we are pathetic but lose say 3-1 and the Aussies stopped trying. They don't. They desperately want a whitewash so we should give our side some credit for outplaying the Aussies over these two days.golfaddick said:Easy to do it when there is nothing to play for. Having said that, Starc's absence is an issue for them although I really didn't expect all stheir quickies, given their injury history, to be fir for all five Tests. Just a shame we were 3-0 down when it happened.5 -
we still need 50 odd runs for only 1 wicket to match what the Aussies had at close of play yesterday.
I reckon will will be all out for close to parity with their score.0 -

TBH I think it's been a poor series and the Aussies have been carried by 3/4 players themselves.
I report into 2 Aussies who love their cricket and both say this is a pretty awful team we're playing. Shame really as I thought Anderson summarised the series so far quite well this evening.0 -
Yes, the Aussie batting lineup is hardly vintage, other than a world class player in Smith and a very good one in Warner, when I think back to some of the previous batting lineups where someone like Mike Hussey had to wait years to get into the teamjamescafc said:

And Stuart Law, who played season after season here for Derbyshire, Essex and Lancs scoring 27,000 first class runs at an average of over 50, batted just the once for Australia in a Test, scoring 54 not out against Sri Lanka.killerandflash said:

Root you’re an idiot sometimes0

Oh FFS, he has a real problem with making 50s and not going on to big scoresAshBurton said:Root you’re an idiot sometimes

That’s shit from Root - gave his wicket away when he should have been grinding the bowling down.
Pressure on Cook to get a big, big score now and get England to 450,0 -
Another lbw that got an inside edge that we haven't reviewed...
246-4
Malan gone for 14 but Cook still there.0 -
Ridiculous. How can two players get an inside edge and not notice?0
