A deserved win in the end after a nervous and pretty even first half. Although Luton became a little ragged in the second half, I felt the big difference between the sides was an imperious performance by Lyle Taylor, who was head and shoulders above every other player on the pitch. Quite apart from his superbly fashioned first goal and trademark penalty, he is the best crosser at the club, an excellent defender from the front and, so it appears from the last 20 minutes, a more than useful number 10, dictating play from just behind Macauley Bonne. The man is a demi-god.

Following a pedestrian performance from our midfield in the first half, Lee Bowyer acted quickly at the start of the second  to introduce George Lapslie after Deji had given the ball away twice in dangerous positions. George went on to have an inspired and energetic 40 minutes, closing down the opposition, winning the ball and constantly moving into space to create passing opportunities for his teammates. After winning the penalty, his goal was the icing on the cake. I may be wrong but I thought he had only had 45 minutes game time for the Under 23s since his comeback but hopefully he can at least be on the bench at Hillsborough, even if he hasn’t yet got 90 minutes in him. His energy helped turn the game in our favour.

A shout out also to Ehrun Oztumer, who provided a couple of beautiful through balls and linked up play nicely. His wild charge into that big bloke in the centre circle in the second half was worth the admission money alone.

Great to see Macauley Bonne back on the field and I feel he will have a big part to play in the last 12 games. The man knows where the goal is and his cross for the third goal was excellent. I’d like to see him start on Wednesday, as his physicality and finishing ability up front give us an additional dimension. Andre Green is quick but he is still learning the position as a striker and lacks a bit of strength and hold-up ability against big centre-halves.

As for Luton, I can see why they have conceded so many goals. Apart from the three we got, the Nabster thumped one against the bar and Green missed the target (albeit under pressure) when it looked easier to score, following great work from Oztumer and Lyle. I can’t see them (or Barnsley, for that matter) catching us now, whilst we now have three other teams between us and Wigan in the drop zone. Hull lost again and are by no means out of it.

A great result and, whilst there is still work to do, we have now taken 9 points this month and won the two critical home games against Barnsley and Luton. Despite their poor run, the game against Wednesday will be tough and I see that Fletcher was a second half substitute for them. Grant is also back for Huddersfield, although hopefully we’ll get something out of the two games next week and, at least reach the 40 point mark with 10 games to go. Let’s hope Pratley is fit for next Saturday, as we are missing his dynamism in midfield.
