Decided to do some cycling indoors yesterday on the trainer. Problem is it's the first time I've attempted using the bike in... some time. Turns out the gear shifting is fucked, front and back, loads of chain rub past 4th which makes it pretty shitty to use with the trainer. It's the one common repair job I've never been able to do. Has anyone here learned from a good video or website? Gears 4 dummies or the like
I'd normally take it to a shop and happily hand over cash because I know it'll at least be done right.0 -

GCN has a handy guide for rear derailleur adjustment. Basically, shift through the gears and listen to the pitch of the chain. It should start to sound 'grindy' when it's out of alignment, so on the first cog that it makes that sound, while still turning the pedals, make a small adjustment in the barrel adjuster - it will either get better or worse. If it gets worse, turn the adjuster in the other direction. Eventually it should start to sound smooth again. Continue down the cogs until its smooth all the way. If you can't tune it like that then either your limit screws need adjusting (more complex to explain - find the GCN video) or your rear mech hanger is bent (no amount of fettling will fix that, you need a new hanger)EastStand said:Decided to do some cycling indoors yesterday on the trainer. If it's your front derailleur, then the GCN video will explain that - you can try fiddling with the barrel adjuster for the front mech, but in my experience, that won't do much - if the front mech is out, you'll generally need to re-tension it or sort the limit screws out0 -
Aye. I know a bloke who did it as part of a team of four, and they had to bow out halfway due to two team members going down. Will have to up my mileage and lower my speed to train for that...😬Baldybonce said:

Thanks Leroy! Had a go but think if anything I made it worse (classic). Luckily found a bike shop near me open and dropped it off just now. Should get it back tomorrow morning 🙌0

Well looking at those numbers Addickted & Leroy it just makes me jealous.
I had a grand laugh today at Strava and indoor trainers. One of the few pros I follow is MTB'er Ondrej Cink. He did a Virtual climb of Bedoin side Ventoux. He's got the legs to be a WC climber on the road, some of his sections he was only top 25% of thousands. An English bloke was top 3 and done an hour at 590 Watts! I think I'll stick to Trainer Road indoors.3 -
Indoor trainers are hilarious. For extra grins, try doing a zwift race. I'm an average 3rd cat rider IRL - woukd probably have made 2nd last year if I hadn't been run over and missed 12 weeks of racing, but that is the limit of what I'll ever achieve on the road. That puts me right at the top of the B cat or right at the bottom of the A cat on Zwift. Some of the people on there who are smashing out 4.5w/kg and more for an hour have flat outside rides that don't top 30k/h for an hour. A lot of the hardship is going to be getting used to the TT position for that amount of time. Realistically, you can't ride a normal bike and complete it within any sort of reasonable time frame - getting aero will save you a huge amount of energy overall - but it's a tradeoff between comfort and speed. There's a condition called 'Shermer' s Neck' for instance, named after the rider who first 'discovered' it, where you literally can't lift your head after a certain number of hours on the bike.Charlton_Charlie said:I watched the Sala RAAM video last night....my days....he suffered.... I've been trying all week to contact Bexley bikes as I've got a hydraulic disc brake issue and a could also do with a service. This looks perfect for me though so I'm going to give Elliott a call later.0 -

Agreeing with Baldy here, Elliott sorted my bike last week and got it running smoothly (apart from another issue I need to sort myself).

I've noticed the opposite up here. Most people out on the roads are riding bikes they look like they unearthed with a metal detector...
All good though, hopefully at least some of them will continue riding after they're allowed to get back in their tin boxes. Fantastic to see so many families out - even if navigating past them wobbling around in the road is a challenge at times 😏
We also don't seem to have quite as many pricks driving around in Monchestuh as mates have said there are in and around London - although paradoxically, despite there being less than half the aggro as usual, the close passes I've had during lockdown are much worse than usual - with even less excuse than the usual pitiful ones (he came out of nowhere, sorry didn't see you mate, why are you riding two abreast etc etc)0 -

I thought I’d be good and wear one. It looked like about 50/50, although mother further from Boston, the numbers dropped. Once I got to Lexington, virtually nobody was wearing as mask. I guess COVID doesn’t hit the burbs.Leroy Ambrose said:
