As a Cat.1 club we'd be able to sign players from wherever we want in the country

Hes back on the Xmas card list then
. Great news that, at least we get a couple seasons out of him now and a half decent fee in a year or 2.

Charlton Athletic are delighted to confirm that talented centre half, Deji Elerewe, has signed his first professional contract with the club, committing his future to the Addicks until at least 2024.
The 18-year-old impressed the Charlton hierarchy during pre-season and made his first team debut in the Carabao Cup against AFC Wimbledon in August. He has made four subsequent first team appearances, including two impressive showings in League One.
Elerewe joined the Addicks esteemed academy as an U13 and explained how delighted he was to sign a professional deal with the club. He said: “It feels great, I love being at Charlton. Charlton is a great club and I love spending my time here.”
A full interview with Elerewe will be available on the club’s channels later this week.
Academy Manager, Steve Avory, has seen Elerewe develop during his time at the club and added: “I am delighted Deji has committed his immediate future to Charlton. He has developed so well throughout his years at the Academy. The development journey continues and I speak for all Academy and First Team staff who will be so pleased that they can continue nurturing his football and personal development. It is another proud day for the Academy.”
Elerewe becomes the latest academy starlet to commit himself to the club, following the recent confirmation that Karoy Anderson had signed his first professional deal and last month’s signing of Harris O’Connor.
Owner, Thomas Sandgaard, said: “I am really pleased we’ve been able to sign Deji to a three-year contract. He is an excellent young player with a bright future ahead of him, so I’m delighted he’s committed to Charlton.
“We have a fantastic academy with an excellent track record of developing players. It is great to see Deji following in the footsteps of so many talented players. I’m looking forward to watching him playing for us for many years to come.”
The Addicks are back in action at The Valley on Saturday when they host Havant & Waterlooville in the FA Cup. Click here to purchase your tickets.

Brilliant news! Looking forward to seeing Deji establish himself in the team now. Backing him to make it happen sooner rather than later.4
-
Interesting that this happened
a) after Jacko replaced Adkins
b) when we lost a second right footed CB to injury AND switched to playing 3 CBs

Good news. Has impressed in pre-season and in the small amount of game time he has had since . Like the way he tries to play the ball to a red shirt rather than just boot it anywhere.0

Unexpected but very pleased. Plenty of opportunities to play this season and hope he continues to improve and get better.1

Really surprised, after so many of our talents like Aribo, Gomez etc leaving at the first opportunity, under Roland’s ownership Deji leaves on a free. At least we’ve protected ourselves now for if and when a team like West Ham etc comes in for him that we get a fee that we deserve.1

Gomez didn't leave at the first opportunity, he signed a pro contract but with an exit clause?1 -
That’s amazing news. Game changer. It’s such an important part of supporting a club, following young talent rising through the ranks, and watching them playing for the first team. Hopefully he’ll be with us as we gain a promotion or two. And at least if he leaves the club will be properly rewarded.Good work TS and the back room staff.7

Excellent news. Nailed on to start on Saturday now, I would expect. Big opportunity for him as right centre back in a 3 with an old head like Pearcy alongside him could be an excellent proving ground for him.

I expect this means we'll see him, Pearce and Gunter all rotate in and out of the starting XI now, to keep them all fresh and hopefully minimising injury risk0 -

End of the day, players will always go to bigger clubs and anyone moaning otherwise is an idiot. What we have to make sure is our talented youngsters are tied down to deals so we get a fair price for them. Losing Aribo for pennies hurts, as does Gomez really when everybody knew the potential. Deji is no Gomez and if he's got say a 3-4mil release clause in the contract at least we're getting our money back plus interest on our investment.0 -
Just a normal club doing normal club stuff. Feels weird.
