Post-match Thread: Morecambe v Charlton Athletic | Tuesday 23 November 2021

Just shy of 800 Addicks followed Johnnie Jackson’s men up to the windswept, north-western enclave of Morecambe to continue our battle to climb the league. We got off to the perfect start as DJ found the back of the net on a somewhat speculative effort. We looked to dominate from then through the first half. We looked to run away as we dominated possession, resulting in a Conor Washington solo effort. With the supporters in good voice we looked on the road to easy street.

The second half was quite scrappy, with the referee seemingly facilitating Morecambe’s efforts to frustrate, confuse and confound. Morecambe salvaged their evening with a penalty and a goal from a header. We worked hard in possession to break them down, but to no avail once they settled behind the ball and worked to find something on the counterattack.

Johnnie Jackson’s unbeaten run continues, however, so keep your peckers up.

Elewere and Leko in for Gunter and Davison please. Neither are good enough.

A very average performance and we had nothing to offer in their box.
  • The ref was only better than Kettle in that he didn't flash his cards like they would lose their colour if they didn't see daylight.

In the run of form we're in its not really too big of a deal.

But, losing a 2-0 lead against a team down the bottom of the table isn't great. 2 points lost in my eyes, let's hope we bounce back against Shrewsbury.

Ref was awful, as are all League One refs.

Interesting Washington talking about playing in the middle
when he asked Nige to do that he was dropped!

We lost that lead because we have 3 CBs out. Gunter got bullied for the first and nobody challenged in the air for their second. If Pearce is out for a while we could face a rerun of last season , around the same time, when our weakened  defence let us down. Only hope is that Elerewe could come in and do well, but that is a big ask.
At least Famewo did not get booked so we will still have him on Saturday.
Real bad luck losing all 3 CBs

Tough game, two points dropped. Fans unreal 👏, We move on 💪  Stock picture in action
  • Tired performance, especially 2nd half. Too sloppy with the ball tonight and made it too easy for a whistle happy plank of a ref to keep giving them cheap free kicks. Said it on the match thread but im sorry,Davison just isnt good enough.
  • Two points, that we can't afford to lose, thrown away.
  • Losing a 2-0 lead is poor but at least we didn't lose.

    We drew.

Injuries and suspensions taking their toll.

Bizarre decisions from the ref. I may be in the minority but I don’t see what value Davison brings to the team, very frustrating. Kirk was pointless when he came on
Your right mate Davison not good enough I’m afraid

Hello.....the Adkins team reappeared 2nd half....laboured performance and always looked vunerable from set pieces. Gunter was awful and got bullied for the penalty. Ref was awful and blew early when we had the ball in their penalty box about to shoot. God we need to get out of this division and way from these shitty shitty refs. 2-0 and we fucked it up.
  • The form we were in under Adkins means that we cant afford this type of scoreline too often between now and the end of the season if we want to end up in the right positions - Unfortunately the odds are slim but we'll always get results like this.

Morecambe defended well, ensured that we had neither space nor time to turn in the box.

They also organised well after going 1-0 down very early

The penalty so soon after going 2-0 down probably helped as had we been able to settle on that scoreline then I think we'd have scored a few more, as it is, it gave the home side the confidence to grow back into the game.
  • If that pen hadn't come so soon after our second I think we may have walked it.
A lot of tired legs out there and we lost a bit of our zip.
Davison tries hard but we need better quality in Stockleys absence.
And yeh, the ref was shit

Didn't think we were too bad. But for some worldy defending from Morecambe,we would have won that.
I can't remember a time when we had so much possession on that left hand side in the he final third of a game. Made nothing from it which maybe says something about Kirk?
Game was crying out for Stockley.

As I said on the preview thread, think the recent push may well take its toll tonight. And so it proved so I'm well happy with a point

Disappointing to not get 3 points after being 2-0 up but one thing we do have to remember is that we're in the middle of a pretty extensive defensive crisis. Our first choice three would probably be Matthews/Innis/Famewo, possibly Lavelle in there. Instead though, we're missing Matthews, Inniss, Pearce and Lavelle. That left us to line up today with one first choice CB and a RB and a CM at the back. It's ok playing the RB in the back three but you only really want to do that with the assurance of two proper centre halves alongside him and we didn't have that option today. It says a lot about the quality of our current set up that that hasn't really even come into the conversation yet. Add to that we're missing our main striker and we've done remarkably well in a tough away game with a threadbare defence and attack. We can look past the disappointment of dropping that lead and see if for what it is, which is a good point. Hopefully in January we can look at a CB and a striker to come in as our squad is big but not quite set up for this shape.

Gunter has been fine under Jackson - He's made one mistake in weeks which unfortunately cost us today. But he's sadly regarded as everything wrong amongst the players so will always get the rough edge the moment he puts a foot wrong

We weren’t quite at it, but..

Don’t normally go overboard on them, and we weren’t that great, but that ref was consistently awful. Soft / bad decisions led to both their goals. 50/50s went for them time after time. Soft free kicks. Final whistle as we were about to shoot before time was up!!!
  • No changes in the team needed. Just tired which is fair. Hope Pearce is back but I’m not going to give Gunter too much stick. Didn’t know you could hand off players in football…

A point, unbeaten under JJ. A result at Shrewsbury and we set off again. No probs.

This ref was an absolute cheat, blew his whistle 10 seconds before the 93rd, when we’re about to have a shot. Disgraceful and one sided officiating,

    Second half was pure ‘Adkins-ball’!
sideward pointless passing, with no potency!

Extremely disappointed to have let slip a 2 goal lead, but just cements the point that Gunter should be nowhere near centreback, we miss Pearce, and that kirk is a complete busted flush who needs shipping out come January!

Davison very poor, but again when we just start lumping it up top early second half then it’s stark contrast to the positive play we had!
Midfield got somewhat over run at times, we had a job done on us!

Ref was poor, but only ourselves to blame - we sat back far too much and wanted to soak up the pressure - the inevitable happened!

A point is a point, but the win should have been paramount and certain
  • Fatigued performance. Stockley would have been useful in both boxes tonight.

Next game we need to adjust the defence so Gunter not in the middle of the 3.
  • The referee was appalling
