On the flip side, I liked Senna and Alonso, despite their arrogance. I quite liked Mika and Kimi too.

It's all well and good saying its not about the nationality in the sports, but then you see the Orange Army turning it into the World Cup trackside, the Tifosi support Ferrari because they are essentially seen as a national team, and the German GP was also Schumacher territory and always will be.
No reason why we should be any different.
As a kid in the 80s, seeing Mansell win at Silverstone was only beaten by being at Wembley for England Euros games for sheer passion and backing of your country in sport. Since Mansell Mania I have always backed the Brits.
Do think when Lewis retires, Lando and George will be able to keep the flag flying for years to come. And get right in the face of Max and the Dutch masses in the stands.1 -

If I was crossing that bridge from Monty Python and the Holy Grail and I was asked who I thought was the greatest F1 driver of all time I would answer Hamilton. There is no bias in that. I genuinely believe it is the case. It is the same with Prost. I would have said Senna at the time, but if I was on that bridge I would have to say Prost out of the two.0

It was supposed to be the spectacle that put F1 back in the spotlight as great sporting entertainment.Well, they got the entertainment part right but not the sport.How can anyone watching for the first time yesterday or even an occasional punter who is not completely up to date with the rules possibly think it’s fair to bring the car in second place which is 12 seconds back down the road, forward to the front for the last lap?
I think a lot of newcomers will have been put off yesterday never to return even if there is another season as exciting. Sorry F1, you had a big chance and I think you blew it.9 -

I have watched several documentaries about Fangio - the racing was brutal, exhausting and dangerous. I'd love to have seen him driving in the modern era.eaststandmike said:

Many of the drivers of the past didn't just compete in F1.

F1 top 10 lists always end in huge arguments I find in terms of who doesn't make them. There's the usual that are on every list (Lauda,Senna,Prost,Lewis, Schumacher) and then the rest seems to be down to the author.0

I'm wondering , I don't know if this too Fantasyland due to Landos long term relationship with McLaren , but post Lewis could Mercedes go for the all British lineup of George and Lando? They won't go anywhere near Max for obvious reasons and there's not a huge amount of other options unless potentially someone like Gasly makes the leap from Alphatauri.0

Yesterday was an absolute farce. I thought Verstappen was a little hard done by at the start, as Hamilton barely gave any track/time back (even Brundle was saying he didn't think he had!). But... what a ridiculous ending as made up by Masi. In all honesty the title should probably be Hamilton's - but now, neither driver is going to feel 100% about it given the appeals and such.
That said, I'm finding it really really funny. Partly because there are enough people who will blindly support Hamilton and claim it as some sort of nationalistic triumph (I don't mean this board cos I don't know, as I rarely post on this thread), and because the media coverage of Lewis is just... I mean, it's absurdly biased.
I don't like Lewis - not as a person, but as a figure - because it's a bit tedious having one ultra-dominant figure in a sport where there are only 20 or so participants on the playing field, year after year. Also because the media coverage just gets up my back. I think his activism is brilliant and he's pretty classy.
I like Max, because of Brazil 2016, and because he was new and basically a child and it was all very exciting when he came into the sport so young. But yeah. That's about my take on F1. It's just funny seeing flag-waving gammons on Twitter lose their absolute shit.1 -

Not even a little bit. The guy is an absolute bell-end, a good driver yes but a prick of a person. He's not particularly likeable even in a ruthless competitor way a la Schumacher.cafcdave123 said:

If he was British then maybe you could see people at least getting behind "one of our own" but he's not.

Is the sport divorced from expressions of nationality?
They have flags and anthems and the like.
There is a similar degree of curiosity in some Olympic events, a lot of focus on individual achievement yet then you have team events by nation. The 100 meters, then the 100 meters relay for example.

I always had a feeling if he won yday and got the 8th he may have checked out. Not sure he fancies the dynamic with Russell and would have been a nice way to achieve the ultimate all time great status and disappear. Adding in the regs changes, it's not even a given Merc will be the dominant powerhouse they have been next season. Obvious question to that plan is who the hell replaces him at this short notice, but never know what behind the scenes convos have been had with Toto. I suspect Merc will believe Russell can be team leader, if not now, then definitely within 2 years.
He did give a 'we'll see about next year' type comment in the post race interview, can't remember exact wording and not sure it's been picked up on in the thread. If it were me in his situ, I'd be beyond pissed off about what happened. My appetite to be involved in a sport I'd been so badly fucked over by down to the lawmakers would leave a real grudge. He doesn't really have anything to prove now and the only thing that would keep him going is the quest for the 8th. I'm sure this comment will be laughed at, but I don't actually think he has that big of an ego for the individual records.
I feel Merc will drop the challenge because ultimately, what good can come of this now. The title is forever tainted and they probably look the bigger man to walk away from it and accept the robbery that's occurred. Masi being removed from post and the wider public opinion that they've been shafted is all that can come of this. Would never be admitted, but I think Ham probably thought he would win the 8th yday and that would be that. If that theory is true, hard to turn that mindset around.
I also would question what Toto does next to be honest. His expression and manner at the end wasn't anger, it was almost betrayal and just complete disbelief.

I suspect if he'd won he might have called it a day. But losing (and particularly in the way he did) he might now want to win one more and get that record outright. He took it with great sportsmanship but he'll not be happy about what happened.lordromford said:

What I suspect could happen is that the court of appeal may make the race result null and void.
That will still give Verstappen the title by virtue of him having won 9 races as opposed to Hamilton’s 8.
Not ideal for anyone but there you have it, tied up in as neat a bow possible for all concerned. 😵💫
