A work in progress, but happy with the performance in first half. Team will take a while to settle  but looking quite positive so far. Hopefully a few more forward options coming in before the transfer window closes.
Just looking for an improvement next week. Seemed to run out of steam a little in the second half.
Gonna need to give the team time to settle and work on the different playing style.

Frustrating to score late and still concede, been a problem for a few years now

Been driving down to Cornwall for most of the day. Only got into our holiday lodge around 4.30 to then hear we had been pegged back to 1-1. Golfie Jnr went delirious when Leaburn then scored what must be the winner at 90+4. How can we not hold onto a lead for 90 seconds. Had us down for a 1-1 so wasn't far wrong.

As I've said until I'm blue in the face......until we can bolster our attack we wont be scoring enough goals to win games. End of.

You think the attack that scored 2 goals is the problem rather than the defence that conceded 2?

    YES

If we had been 3-0 up we wouldnt have lost. I hear we were dominant for parts of the 1st half & missed some chances. Put those away then we wouldn't have lost

And the game is about scoring goals & not about not letting them in. You cant win a game of football if you dont score. It is that simple.

There you go Ben.  11 strikers.  Sorted.

I know I said we would be the draw specialists this season but I assumed we would've the nous to hold on to a lead when we scored deep into added time !

I like managers to be pro active not reactive and Accrington were in the ascendancy and with 5 subs then make the change at 1-0 up not 1-1.

We snatched a draw from the jaws of Victory.

Garnerball.  I like the idea.  I don't like our centre halves playing it.  The midfield can't have Albie and Fraser.  They struggle to track back effectively.

    McGrandles and Payne are needed.

It's the first game.  Long way to go.

No matter how undeserving a 2-1 win would have been, to not be able to see out last 90 seconds or so is criminal.
  • Watched the game live from abroad. Always going to be difficult when the first game is away to a squad of thugs.  First half was decent, 2nd half they dominated. 1.5 minutes away from a decent win, which now feels like a loss, but a lot of positives to take. Just need to concentrate after we score. Work in progress and Garner wants two or three more players in. High hopes for this season; let’s be positive.

Such a shame to finish only level.

    And if you disagree,
    That doesn't bother me,
We only took the one point,
    But it should've been three.

    So chuffed for Miles though.

We were the better team first half, they were 2nd half... not sure why everyone is pissing themselves, Mcgrandles and Payne are not matchfit and haven't come in to sit on the bench. As much as Accrington are known to be a shithouse of a team, they aren't a bad side at all and we outplayed them first half. We still need a lb who can cover cb and a a goal- scoring winger (Preferably a striker aswell), but if we get them I reckon we will be right up there

As Fenland said a work in progress, the passing out from the back is suicidal it times and I doubt the midfield 3 that started will do so for many more games. It was a great feeling to have Leaburn score in fact both goals were well worked in the new system. Stockley is acclimatising to the new way and can only improve - can't he, and it seems we have a good shot stopper.

wonder how many of todays players will be fit for the Derby game after the battering in the 2nd half.

overall I'm impressed but expect better in a few weeks time.

Well I thought there were lots of positives to take from that.

Accrington are a bloody awful team to play against. Kicking lumps out of you and then screaming for fouls at the slightest bit of contact.

They used precisely those tactics to wrestle momentum from us in the second half. Thought we’d got away with a bit of a robbery when Leaburn rose highest to bundle the ball past the keeper but in true Charlton fashion, we threw it away.

Frustrating but that’s the highs and lows of football and why we love it.

Yes it was great seeing Miles score. The celebrations by the team were brilliant. Added a positive spin to a draw. The win was so close as well. Hope he continues to get games, and play that well too.

Just looked at the scores on the doors and so many people have watched different matches. Dobson gets an 8 and a 4 !

Confused how its being said George Dobson doesn't fit a system when he is a holding midfielder ?  If you have attacking full backs and Morgan and Fraser who look to support the attacking options then someone needs to protect Inniss and O'Connell.

he did struggle a couple of times today, receiving the ball near his goal. Not so bad to be worth a 4 though!

No they snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat. Arguably they still had the ascendancy and would have scored anyway.

O'Connell should have fouled their player in the first instance.

    A. Great result as we scored so late
    B. Poor result as we conceded so late

Supporting Charlton never easy. Unless we’re at Wembley, then it’s simple.

    Hardly surprising when George Dobson played against Welling and not Swansea;
GB's not going to be sharp and we were at least one friendly short against a Direct playing League side.

A lot to be positive about but some worrying aspects of that performance too. Wasn’t impressed with O’Connell. Lost a challenge in midfield and then got turned inside out twice for their first goal. Both full backs looked steady enough. Inniss worries me. GK made some excellent saves when called upon. He’ll be fine. Albie had a great first half then vanished. Fraser looked unfit and lethargic to me. Dobson a bit like Albie had a good first 45 then disappeared. Deji flitted in and out but doesn’t do enough for me. CBT is a constant threat. Stockley drops deep and worked hard without ever once looking threatening. Kirk looked promising as did Payne. McGrandles didn’t stand out. Leaburn is going to be a very good player. Certainly didn’t look out of his depth. Great to see him score what we all thought was the winner but this is Charlton.

We need Payne in asap. His composure will be needed. We were the better team but they caused us plenty of problems.

I have a feeling Fraser is the type of player that always looks unfit.

First half there were encouraging signs and we definitely put together some nice passing moves. The move for the opening goal, being a case in point. However, it was alarming that neither centre back looked at all happy playing out from the back. Sessengnon looked excellent in the first 45 as well.

Accrington clearly had a rocket at helf time as their shit housing went up a level, its painful watching them crunching into tackles, pulling shirts etc and then seeing them whine and complain at the slighest contact.

IMO we needed freshening up in midfield earlier than Garner actually did it. McGrandles looked tidy when he came on and will be a big plus this season. Payne's cameo caught the eye as well and I think he will be a real favourite.

Can't not mention Woolacott. Bit of an enigma for me. Great shot stopper, but looks like a flapper and may need to reign in the "come for absolutely everything" mentaility.

Its a definite improvement on the utter capitulation up there last season and I think with time we will become a team who are very easy on the eye and exciting to watch.

The equaliser was a kick in the nuts no doubt about it. Looking back at it, I think it could have been defended far better. No pressure on the cross and Innis was nowhere near his man when the cross came in. Unfortunately, Sessingnon was feeling the pace at that time (no surprise given he had not played 90mins in pre season) and in a couple of weeks time I think he stops the initial cross.

Positives - Dobson looks ok in this new formation, Fraser far more involved than last season, Woolacott is a good shot stopper, Sessingnon looks a proper player, nice cameo from Payne and obviously the goal for Leaburn.

Negatives - Both CBs looked uncomfortable on the ball, midfield vanished second half and the front 3 never really gelled. We also had the age old issue of looking vulnerable at set plays.

Overall a 6/10 - 7 first half, 5 second. Am actually quite pleased as I thought we might get a going over today and that this game was coming at the wrong time - when trying to implement a new more expansive style.

What is nice is the fact that you can see what the manager is trying to instill in the team. Might need a few weeks for all players to settle into the new way of playing, Also like the way Garner speaks. Very level headed interview. He and his coaching staff were vocal during the match as well - you could hear them on the stream. Something I always thought was lacking under Jackson and Euell.

If it’s Inniss and O’Connell as our preferred pairing then we’re going to conceded some right comedy goals playing out from the back. We got away with some unbelievably poor stuff from those two today. I like Inniss but I’m not really that sure why. Jury out on O’Connell for me but it is only one game in.
