Rip the queen, amazing woman.  Very sad news (and also not a royalist).

for me, the best thing Charles could do now, for the monarchy, is to abdicate and hand over to William. Clearly wont happen.
Charles has been meeting the crowds outside Buckingham Palace, I think he is going to me a very good Monarch. It will be different, but there is no reason for him to abdicate in favour of Prince William. The King will have the same sense of duty as his mother
I like him.  I think he’ll do a good job.  I really think William will do a good job.  I have watched him and Harry over the years and I think they really get theirs and the younger generations.
  • The best thing Charles can do is continue on the work that his Mother has been doing, set by example and keep the monarchy in a safe position.

William should be about 10 years younger than what Charles is now when he takes the throne, and given he's grown up around it more... Can potentially be the one to take the monarchy into the future, or even a slightly different direction

Why is that the best thing? The best thing he can do is be a king in his own right based on the coaching and upbringing from his predecessor, who did a very good job.

the guy has been groomed for this since the day of his birth. why would he walk away?

King Charles has been committed to the fight against climate change for decades. I sincerely hopes he continues that fight, despite this new government seeming to set out on a different path.
Or do you think shouldn’t he get involved? It’s an interesting quandary.

I would love to be a fly on the wall. I don't think he will interfere much, but he is a very passionate environmentalist, so I doubt he will remain silent if this Government carries out the plans recently announced.

He should absolutely stay involved.  Not to derail the thread, but we could’ve done with more people like him when it comes to the planet in powerful positions

Lovely speech from Charles - Not surprised that he's continued the promise from his Mother.

Was nice to hear him call her affectionately as well towards the end

He kept calling her "Mother", but remembered how he didnt when talking at the end of the Jubilee a few months ago... I know he's King now, but cmon lad... no one is gonna judge you - Was annoying me a little that one in a nice way.

The King's tribute to his mother was wonderful.
  • Brilliant address from the King

  • Charles is going to be a brilliant king. And with William to follow, the monarchy is in exceptional hands IMO. Loved the fact he mentioned Harry and Meghan too.

He has a reputation amongst royal staff of being a top bloke - wicked sense of humour and by all accounts a very nice guy.
  • I doubt many of us would get half way through the first sentence trying to do a speech the day after losing your mum.

He won’t do it officially (and even said he will stop all charity work) but compared to his Mum he’s been able to influence and shape his own beliefs, values and causes for 50 odd years to this point.

It may not be direct but he will continue to have impact from an even more powerful position, I’m sure.

Now that really would be a service to the country, and to the world. I'd really be pleased to finally see the monarch intervene when something seems morally wrong. It's apparent on this thread that the public consider the monarch as a demi-god.
    RIP Elizabeth R.

I still love the video of him where he visits the BBC and had a go at doing the weather :D

  • Charles has got credible green credentials and in many respects was way ahead of the game and spoke out when it was still viewed by many as fringe if not crackpot. Although it’s de rigour for the monarch to remain silent on political issues I think climate change now needs to be front and centre of all countries policies. I’d be quiet happy if Charles remains a voice for green issues even to the point of breaking protocol and speaking out where he sees things going wrong.

I’m certainly no monarchist and consider myself a Republican but for some strange reason I’ve always had a sneaky liking for Charles. I think he’s got a good sense of humour, which I see as an appealing trait and I feel that had he not from childhood had all the restraints and constraints of his position as heir to the throne I think we might have seen him emerge as quite a personality. For years really there have been suggestions that he might not become king but step aside for his son but I’m glad that hasn’t happened. I do hope he emerges from the shadow of his responsibility and we see a front and centre king. He is without doubt going to be the bridge between old style monarchy and what we can eventually expect with William and Kate. He’s definitely got an important role to play. I think he’s up to it.

I've not read every post, but two things stood out for me today....firstly Macron's speech was beautiful and very heartfelt.....King Charles 3 speech was touching, eloquent, heartfelt and at the end moved me to tears...and I'm not a Royalist, but Charles was excellent  and has been all day today.

    Wonderful speech from The King.
