Andy Gray to stay?

edited July 2009 in General Charlton
Could Andy Gray stay even after the recent speculation of Burnley. We have heard nothing since but Parky is happy to let Mcleod and Fleetwood leave, so could this be a move to make the wage bill settled to keep Andy Gray for him to fire us in to the championship! I hope so!

  • I must say I do find it very strange it has taken him so long to sign for another club especially after supposedly having had a medical.
  • There are 3 possibilities with Gray in my view.

    1) he has failed the medical and the problem is considered too serious / much of a risk by Barnsley and others

    2) Pardew paid him too much and no other club considers him worth those wages in the present climate. We may end up still having to pay some of his wages even if he does go

    3) He wants domestic stability because of the well documented personal problems and he has time to run on his Charlton contract.
  • I can't see him staying unless it's by default.
  • from the Barnsley messageboard a few fans say that they have spoken to a couple of the Barnsley players and even Simon Davey and that Andy Gray has passed a medical, agreed terms and will be joining soon but it's being held up by a delay at the Charlton end.
  • Yes, this situation is a curious one. Andy Gray is clearly on a hefty wage and the Club would dearly (ha!) love to get him off the wage bill. However, as Len says, there will be only a limited number of clubs interested in him because of his wage expectations.

What I don't understand, bearing in mind that he must still have a long part of his contract to run (almost two years?), is why no-one has sat him down and said "OK, we are where we are (Manager speak). Now let's make the best of it. You are not likely to be going anywhere, but you are a contracted player to this Club. We paid you well during your traumatic last season, but now it's time for you to pay the Club back by knuckling down and delivering the goals to get us out of this League."

A decent season (assuming he does not have long-term injury problems) gets everyone back on track and paves the way for Gray to move on this time next year when his stock will have risen, or to continue to do the business with us in the Championship.

Too obvious? Too simple? Too näive?

There must be more to this situation than meets the eye.
  • No, just too expensive Dave....
  • Thats a good post Dave. I just wonder if his departure is linked to the takeover, i.e. the new people may want to keep him, the current regime has cut a deal with Barnsley but it's on hold awaiting Board room developments.

    nail in head IMHO

plus he may well want to go back up north.

He may well want to go back up North but, until a suitable club makes an offer, he goes nowhere. So, rather than just leave things in limbo, how about we try to get something out of him?

Anyway, if LargeAddick's post is correct, it looks like Barnsley have done the honours ......... although I bet we're still offsetting part of his wages.

Speaking to him at the sponsors evening back in May, he said that his wife and family are settled in the Bromley area and he was looking forward to the pre-season

  • Why the move is being held up who knows, I'd guess that if the hold-up is at our end then it's a consequence of the transfer speculation concerning McLeod/Fleetwood and maybe also Dickson. If they all go it means that we could go into the first match or two with only Burton as a recognised striker and therefore Parky is correctly holding things up until we sort out their transfers (or not) and/or get replacements in. If that inconveniences Gray then tough, he's under contract, we're paying his wages and until we have some idea of what our strike force is and we have some depth then he isn't going anywhere. Besides, the transfer window doesn't shut just yet.
  • It was only a Barnsley message board that set the hold up was at our end. And we know how reliable message boards are (sorry AFKA)

If we don't sell him then by all means play him but why bet that we are off-setting his wages? What is that based on?

We don't know the full story. Maybe another club have come in for him and offered more, maybe he doesn't fancy Barnsley and is holding out for a better club or more wages. Who knows?

Barnsley or Bromley. No wonder he doesn't want to move : - 0

so why isn't he featuring in pre-season if there is a chance of him staying ? He was passed fit to start pre-season training but hasn't featured at all. Wouldn't surprise me if he was actually already training with Barnsley with our permission and the deal will be rubber-stamped soon.

You could well be right. Has he played for Barnsley pre-season?
  • [cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]You could well be right. Has he played for Barnsley pre-season?

    No.
  • Can't see why selling him would be delayed by any talks. From RM/DC position, a million or two saved in wages off the books plus perhaps half our money back as a fee puts the sellers in a stronger position. Can't see the buyers wanting to keep him on Championship wages in this division. Perhaps the deal is that close that the agreed fee includes players on the books at a fixed moment in time but I have done buy-outs before and it's impossible to freeze all transactions, you just add or subtract from your agreed price.

    No.[/quote]

    He can't he's under contract.
  • Maybe if there are takeover actions taking place, there's a mutually agreed embargo on all contracted players, who knows?
After all, if someone was taking over any business they'd want to keep major assets, until they've had time to assess, surely?

And if there is no takeover in progress, the existing Board may have a plan:

    A) keep existing players until at least January transfer window, and assess promotion prospects at that point - if we are in the promotion frame, take a chance and not sell;

    B) if we are stuck in a mid-table rut with no promotion prospects, then saleable players could be sold. Clubs always sell for bigger fees in the January window.

what the oggster said sounds about the most sensible options to me

That conversation might have happened, for all any of us know, surely?
  • Have had a whisper of info on this one.

The deal with Barnsley might be a bit more complicated than we think as there is a player potentially coming in our direction as a part ex.

    Kayode Odajeye anyone?.

IS that the player concerned or you guessing that is the player concerned ??
  • That is the player concerned. Well, that is what I have been told.
  • Interesting twist in the tail/tale.

So things not always as simple as they may seem. Or maybe not.

Can't say the prospect sets the heart racing but he's a big lump (6' 3'')

    From Wiki

Olukayode Ishmael "Kayode" Odejayi (born 21 February 1982 in Ibadan, Oyo State) is a Nigerian professional footballer currently playing for Football League Championship club Barnsley. Kayode Odejayi as been playing in Barnsley's 2009/2010 pre-season football campain and as scored 5 goals in as many match's.

    Career

Odejayi, a striker, was at Bristol City as a trainee, before moving on to Conference side Forest Green Rovers in 2002. 2002-03 turned out to be Rovers' best ever season since their foundation in 1890, and Odejayi was a key figure, scoring 13 goals as the club finished ninth.

This brought him to the attention of Cheltenham Town, and then-manager Bobby Gould signed him that summer. His first two seasons were a struggle but in his third season (2005-06) he played almost every game as Cheltenham stormed to the play-off final, winning 1-0 against fancied Grimsby Town. He came to national attention in January 2006 when Cheltenham faced Newcastle United in the FA Cup 4th round. Odejayi was outstanding, giving French international defender Jean-Alain Boumsong no end of problems during the game. Following the game he was linked with a move to Championship team Plymouth Argyle however the move never materialised.

On May 31, 2007, Odejayi moved to Barnsley for £200,000, a Cheltenham record for a sale of a player. Forest Green Rovers will receive a windfall from the transfer as part of the terms of Odejayi's Cheltenham deal.[1]

He scored in the Reds' first friendly against Morecambe in a 2-1 defeat. He then bagged a brace against Portuguese side Louletano DC in a 3-2 win. In a 3-1 victory against Buxton he bagged his fourth goal in three games.

Kayode netted his first competitive goal for Barnsley against Scunthorpe United which effectively sealed a 2-0 victory for the Reds.

Odejayi has now set his sights on an international call up for the country of his birth, Nigeria.

Odejayi was booed off by his own fans against Southampton, after he missed a string of chances at goal. He himself admitted about his poor performances and promised the fans he would step it up and he did in the FA Cup quarter finals. Bobby Hassell and Barnsley manager Simon Davey have both publicly given the striker their backing. He will now unquestionably go down in folklore of Barnsley Football Club, as the scorer of one of the most important goals in their history when he secured a 1-0 victory at Oakwell, in the quarter finals of the FA Cup 2008 against Chelsea. On April 6, 2008 in the FA Cup Semi Final against Cardiff City he missed a glorious chance to score when he was put clean through on goal only to shoot wide, costing Barnsley the chance to equalise and possibly reach the FA Cup Final for the first time since 1912.

In January 2009, there was talk of him being pursued by Barnsley's South Yorshire neighbours, Rotherham United.[2]
  • Make a song up for that one!
  • Also longer he is on our books we pay him! No incentive for Barnsley to move things along (as long as he signs by transfer deadline). Not much of a risk in waiting. Can't see anyone else wanting to sign him!
  • Since 2007 for Barnsley and then Scunthorpe briefly on loan he has made 31 league starts and 42 sub appearances and scored...........FIVE goals!! Hardly better than what we have.
