Things being overrated are purely subjective, one man's trash is another man's treasure.
Kind of Blue is often cited as the greatest jazz record of all time. I've tried on multiple occasions to get onboard with that album. I cannot, my brain won't allow it, as soon as the trumpet kicks in it goes off. I cannot help thinking its the sound track to a mad man.
He was a bit of an arse, used to slap his wife around, but let's not let that get in the way of great

Euro ‘96, New Labour coming to power (even though I didn’t really know what that meant - it felt exciting), pop-stars going to Downing Street and all of a sudden there was all this British music on the radio where previously American artists had dominated. Even Charlton started to do well! It seemed like, in the space of a few years, England went from grey and boring to technicolour.Oasis were the centre of that universe musically, there were lots of good Britpop acts, but they were the giants. It didn’t last, in my late teens Britpop died to be replaced by awful nu-metal rubbish before the Libertines and a new generation of English bands came to the rescue when I was at Uni. But through my rose tinted spectacles that time where Oasis ruled the waves seemed like a great time for music in this country and their songs are wrapped up in those memories.Plus Liam is still cool AF.2

Oasis, The Stone Roses and Nirvava may be musically overrated, it can’t be doubted though that they all made at least one very good album.
None were that original musically BUT was isn’t overrated is the impact all of them had on music culture and history or whatever you want to call it.
Whether it be the crossover between dance and acid house, the final countdown to the nail in the coffin of cock rock (thank god) or the resurgence of British guitar bands.
They may have been in the right place at the right time….. but at the time and when all of them ‘broke’ I can’t think now of many other bands that were doing what they were.
It’s not just about the songs, the singing or the musicianship…. It’s about the energy and aura too.

I’ve never known anything like the cult following of Taylor Swift. Her fans are not only defensive but also quite dangerous.
Her new album has 30 new songs on it and it’s quite impressive how shes made them sound all the same.8 -
Beyoncé - overrated? - 😂😂😂😂😂0

Adele - boring4

Virtually everybody you hear on mainstream "pop" radio. I only really hear it in when I am in taxis and I am not saying they don't have the occasional good tune, but even that is often because the main riff is "sampled" from a decent song. I know I sound like the 59 year old bloke I am, but I like modern indy, rock, punk etc (when I get the chance to hear it - which isn't on mainstream radio), but Dua Lipa, Swift, Sheeran etc leave me stone cold.2

I said to them, do you ever listen to Madonna? Blank look. To me that's a proper respected solo female artist.
I should add that I realised that I haven't bought anything from a new artist in the last 10 years, and attended the mod May day at the weekend!1 -
One thing about music or musicians making ‘statements’ or being embroiled in cultural shifts, touching or creating (or manipulating) the zeitgeist of the time is that the music becomes a lecture.
The sex pistols with the anarchy, and so on with other bands, want to scream about the wrongness of it all. Some songs are celebratory. Now they can make some good sounds, but there comes a point where certainly I would ask ‘Who are you to lecture me about anything Johnny Rotten?’Yes there are statement songs like ‘won’t get fooled again’, but usually those lecturing us end up mainstream advertising butter or something.
Above somebody was glad to see the end of ‘cock rock’, but I would say the vast majority of songs across the ages have been about love and sex.
Because love and sex is eternal and universal, and that is why as a theme it is such a resilient one.
Sometimes a person can want to hear a revolutionary song, that is valid, but it is not invalid if a song is there dealing with eternal themes like heartbreak, attraction, love, desire and raw sex.1 -

Probably not a name you're familiar with, but his "atmospheric" piano music is likely the sort of thing you've heard on all sorts of adverts, or in the background during a TV episode/film where there's some sort of conflict and character development or some rubbish like that.
This sort of thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDY95J9aQbg
His stuff is all somewhat pleasant, but hangs around about three chord progressions (VI-bVII-I; or I-V-VI-III; or so on so forth), and it's all incredibly repetitive. He has made a career out of the musical equivalent of an amateur Instagram sunset photo, or email condolence, and it's all... the same.
Yet people are mesmerised and I do not understand why.0 - Sponsored links:
