Danny Hylton Signs As Player Coach

Charlton Athletic are pleased to confirm that Danny Hylton has joined the club as a player-coach on a short-term deal.

The vastly-experienced striker, who has tasted three EFL promotions, featured for the Addicks during pre-season, scoring in the 6-1 win at Dartford.

Nathan Jones is delighted to be working alongside the 35-year-old once again after handing him 158 appearances at Luton Town. He said: “Danny is someone I know very, very well who is a true professional. He will be an important member of our squad and coaching team. He will push and educate our players and he will live and breathe the club. When needed, he will be someone we can rely on for something different on the pitch.

“He has been with us since the summer and this role is the start of his coaching journey, and I have no doubt he will continue to have a positive impact on our group.”

    Well I'm not entirely sure I see the need for this but Jones apparently does and he's been much more right than wrong so far.

    Got to be focussing on the coaching given our options up front.

    Short term deal almost suggests it’s a trial, perhaps Hylton to prove himself as a coach, and the Jones to show the board the benefit it’ll bring.

    I’d guess he’s here until the start of January, similar to Potts?

    Nathan loves working with people he knows and trusts, so no real surprise, and could end up a good addition and cover both positions, Player and Coach...

    I really hope we never see him wearing a Charlton shirt for the first team. Maybe he'll get the odd game for the U21s, as a lot of clubs now have a senior pro player these days to guide the academy players on the pitch.

    Could turn out to be a great addition for players like Kanu, TC, and Dixon if Hylton is going to be working directly with these young players. His attitude and professionalism is what got him his career, he’s also good at the dark arts, something that can be taught of how to get the better of defenders, something that these young players can really learn.

    Let’s see how it goes. I don’t suppose we will see him in a Charlton shirt much at all, but his value could be at Sparrows Lane.

    With the coaching aspect as part of his deal, how much of his wages goes towards our salary allowance? Is that a loophole we have used?

    Given the issues we have with our strikers scoring record so far this season I'd say there is a clear need for some guidance in that department.

    Feels like a bit of an 'icky' signing but Jones has built up enough positive equity to trust in the decision. Alfie who?

    He is 35, closing in on 36. He has scored 12 goals in the last 6 years. None in the last 2 & a half years.

    Don't mind him playing in the BSM games & maybe early rounds of the FA Cup

    As long as he doesn't take playing time from kanu, I can't see a problem having him as an emergency back up and additional coach, the manager knows him. Very similar to sir chris signing euell minus the Charlton connection.

    Given that we've got Leaburn, Godden, Academe, Kanu and Campbell already in the squad, and M'Bick and Casey coming through the ranks well, I'd be amazed if we ever see Hylton in a first team shirt. Except maybe in one of the nothing "Trophy" games alongside a youngster. Unless Hylton is a very good coach this makes no sense to me whatsoever.

    If we are 1-0 up with ten minutes to go and under pressure, the player I'd most like to come on is Hylton. Expert in shithousery.

    Coaching that to youngsters is invaluable.

    I think it is well known that Hylton is a close friend of NJ and he is probably being given a start as a coach to be used as a player in an emergency.

    Ahadme, TC, Godden, Kanu, Aneke, Leaburn and possibly even Dixon, Mbick and Casey are all ahead of him in the pecking order. 

    I’m fairly certain that anyone worrying about him or his goalscoring outputs is going to have nothing to worry about. 

    If NJ thought he had something serious to offer on the pitch, he would’ve signed him earlier in the window like he did with Luke Berry.
