He was once quoted as saying that, after fifty years in politics, when he died, the only headlines will be about a punch he threw.  I wonder if Lifers have any more memories of this political behemoth..?

    I wonder if he had planned his funeral (having two hearses show up would be a wonderful last laugh to have).

    A conviction politician, who cut his cloth to achieve the possible, rather than hold out for the perfect.

    Didn't always like him, but respected him.

    I met him a few times and he was a complex character.

    There is no doubt that he was integral to Blair in connecting him with the grass roots.

    Just seen a video of Prescott and Jeremy Clarkson absolutely going at it about the m4 bus lane on top gear. Epic stuff. RIP

    I had the pleasure of being on the opposite side of the negotiating table to him. I admired him as a man of humour and a passionate trade unionist who said it as he believed - RIP John
