  • Sounds like they need a Matt smith involved somewhere!!
  • Despite the fact that he stated that he wanted to stay on, Jon Lewis has become the collateral damage for the Women's 16-0 thrashing in the Ashes. The issues are far deeper than the Women's Head Coach.
Typical sexism in sport, getting rid of the only man involved  ;)

They've sacked Heather Knight too in order to balance the books.
  • Bashir is joining Glamorgan on loan. The stint is understood to be for the first three matches of the season, starting at Sophia Gardens against Leicestershire on April 4, before away fixtures against Gloucestershire and Middlesex. He is covering for leg spinner Mason Crane who will miss the first three rounds with a shoulder injury.
  • There’s an argument for going back to an Ashley Giles type spinner- someone that will bat at 8 and make runs and take catches and hopefully get wickets on day 5.

Agreed but the trouble is that we don't have anyone that readily springs to mind apart from Dawson and the reasons for him not being a viable option have been well discussed. Apart from the issue with not being able to give spinners the opportunity to hone their game in the county championship (England's current number one being one such example), the priority of young spinners, due to the influence of white ball cricket, is to contain with a distinct lack of flight and guile. Livingstone, Jacks, Bethell etc etc all fall into that category.

One player who might fulfil that position, eventually, is Archie Vaughan. It is his presence, along with that of Leach, in the Somerset side that has meant that Bashir is now on his second loan spell since breaking into the England side. Vaughan has only 15 FC wickets, albeit at just 20.13 each but that does include 11-140 in a CC match against Surrey. Spinners only mature through weight of overs and usually understand their game once they reach their late 20s and the fact that we are talking about a 19 year old usurping 21 year old Bashir demonstrates how lacking the options are.

James Coles could be a long term option too but I think Bethell does that role better of a left arm spinner that bats middle order

Have no idea why Jack Carson isn't getting a look in either. 50 wickets for a promoted Sussex side and a solid bat.
  • Jofra Archer's figures in today's IPL match so far are 3-0-57-0. The pitch is a road but his deliveries have been somewhat predictable.

Archer like Atkinson is better suited to red ball cricket imo.

The trouble with Bethell is that he is, at best, a white ball spinner. He has 10 FC wickets at 75.00 each as opposed to Vaughan's 15 wickets at 20.13. I agree about Coles and Carson though being the son of a former England captain probably puts Vaughan ahead of them both in the eyes of the selectors.

But doesn't have the body capable of playing Test cricket - 13 Test matches, the last of which was over four years ago.

I won't quote the whole article, but in The Times the ECB are considering an indoor stadium in the north, probably Manchester. Hobart is building one, tall enough for cricket, which would enable a much longer season.

The ECB is closely monitoring the development of a new stadium at Macquarie Point, Hobart, which could begin later this year and is set for completion by late 2028. As with many venues in Australia it is intended to be used for several sports, including Australian rules and rugby, but Cricket Tasmania is involved in the project and the intention is that it should also host state and Test cricket.
David Boon, the former Australia Test batsman, is chair of Cricket Tasmania and has just been appointed to Cricket Australia’s board of directors. He is championing the stadium’s ambition to become the world’s first covered Test venue. The ECB is positioning itself to provide the second.
A key feature of stadiums such as those at Hobart is a transparent domed roof made of the plastic ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), which is both lightweight and durable, and allows for a lot of light to come through. This enables the grass beneath to grow without the need for expensive heating and lighting systems seen at other indoor stadiums with less-sophisticated roof systems. Rainwater gathered from the roof would be used to irrigate the playing area.
Alastair Richardson, chief executive of Cox Architecture, which is involved in the Macquarie Point plan, said: “We’re bringing cold air in the bottom and extracting hot air at the top. What we’ve found is that these types of stadiums, because of the warmth, increase the growing season [for grass].”

Finished with 4-0-76-0. Archer bowled one dot ball and that must be his worst ever T20 figures? For a bit of context, SRH ended up with 286-6 and just two short of a new IPL record. And they were asked to bat!

    Totally agree.
Can't see him playing any format for England much longer.

Please, please explain to me why a skipper would win the toss in a day game, on the flattest track in the IPL, and choose to bowl.
    Just why...?

    Makes you wonder!
    (*edit*  flattest wicket, not latest!)

And SRH now hold the top three scores in the history of the IPL, all of which have come in the last year - two at Hyderabad and one at Bengaluru.

He might manage ODIs, otherwise I can see him being another Tymal Mills, someone not physically capable of red ball cricket.

On a 40 degree day the heat in there would be insufferable. Full on health hazard.

Mills is a fantastic comparison, managed to make a very good career for himself from T20 and just bowling very quick 4 over spells whilst managing his back issues.

That domed stadium proposal looks completely stupid and a complete white elephant of an idea

Thinking the same, what's the point of a single all-weather stadium? won't help more than once team, or one test, unless entire series will be played in it. no doubt another big payday for Surrey

Mind you the late Derek Leslie Underwood won test matches in his early twenties. Australia at The Oval 1968 for instance.

Indeed. The fundamental difference is that Deadly took 100 county championship wickets in his first season at the age of just 17. He made his England debut at 21 by which time he had developed a repeatable action, bowling at 65mph plus at times with variations to boot. By the age of 25 he had 1,000 wickets. Bashir has 49 wickets at 40.16 and is still learning how to pitch the ball where he should and wants to.
  • Is this IPL sponsored by Taylor swift?

Jordan Cox won't be keeping wicket for a while, especially in red ball cricket, as he recovers from his broken thumb. That fracture was a bit of a sliding doors moment for him, but a typically odd England selection at the time.

It was but (and please excuse the pun) in keeping with their approach in giving opportunities to batsmen who play red and white ball - Bethell, Smith, Livingstone, Brook and Jacks are the previous five to be be capped with Jacks and Livingstone rapidly dumped having played just three matches between them.
  • Charlotte Edwards the new women's coach, the obvious and correct decision. Captaincy choices are much trickier
