Nathan Jones speculation - Cawley says indications are no chance Jones going to Cardiff (p20)

  • Nobody knows what the budget is. It seems to me Jones has a close relationship with the owners and when we were struggling he asked them to trust him and back him and they did.  We are clearly not going to have the biggest budget in the Championship but the intention is surely to get out of it from the top end or else why buy the club? I would expect the budget to factor in Jones' abilities but give him a realistic chance of working his magic.

He will probably have his chance of managing Cardiff down the line, but the time is clearly not now. If Jones was at another club, he may well have been sacked in December and then Charlton would just be an addition to his failures. He was given time and used it brilliantly but his failures, Stoke and Southampton, he wasn't given time and the question has to be asked, would he have turned things round if he was. I think probably. Basically, he is smart enough to know that he has to see the project through. He has momentum and some great young players as a platform.

All of this speculation is probably a good thing, as it is a reminder that we can't go into the Championship with a Roland mindset.
About Roland - what will he do about the rent we pay on the Valley now we are promoted?

    0% chance he is going
End of the day this squad needs major surgery just to stay up, if he’s not been promised the funds then it’s a hopeless task.
This is the key to any plans for his own career. He believed that he could improve the players and that his strategy would move the club forward. I think he got promotion earlier than even he expected. He has spoke numerous times about 'the project' being a long term plan. Well that may be the owners plans, but NJ seeks results and momentum (on or off the pitch).

Can he stay grounded, and will the owners plan AND budget, meet with his own views as being reasonable?

I don't doubt that he loves a challenge, but it needs to be reasonably achievable. The Championship is unforgiving and there are big spenders and established clubs aplenty. We will do well to stay up, regardless if budget, however a smaller budget proportionate to the competitors, will equate to a season-long struggle. Does that put fire in NJ's belly, or have him looking at another option, that he would love?
I’d like to think that Jones has set down with the owners and thrashed out a long term strategy with timescales and budgets. That would be a sensible business and footballing plan. Jones is experienced enough to know what’s required in The Championship in terms of experience, quality and finances. I’m confident that both a sensible budget and strategy are in place already and Jones will be hard at work making that happen. We won’t stay up trying to do so on the cheap and although I can’t see us splashing the cash I don’t see the opposite either. Contrast that scenario against working for an owner that hires and fires on a whim and will unrealistically offer the earth and not deliver. Cardiff are a club that is at present on the decline and Tan is probably 90% why. I really don’t see Jones jumping ship under those circumstances. It would literally be a crazy choice.

Another snippet from my overheard conversation between my mate and an academy coach .. NJ is so focused on Charlton, he spent the week before the play off final sleeping at the training ground. Jones to Cardiff … Nah. Not having it
Sleeping at the training ground…..is that not weird ?

Nothing about Nathan Jones surprises me.

Personally I would be surprised if he went but it is not completely out of the question.

    A couple of historic comparisons.

Mike Bailey left us after the 80/81 promotion, but that was to manage in  the top tier . He later said that it was partly because he felt Glikstein never completely trusted him and clearly Brighton was a major opportunity. It doesn't feel that  a Cardiff move for Nathan would have the same appeal

The other example I will give is Curbs. There used to be almost an annual speculation that he would defect to West Ham. I remember on one occasion in 2001  hearing Trevor Brooking confirm that he believed that Curbs would love to manage at Upton Park one day but the timing wasn't right. The next week Curbs signed a new contract with us. As we know Lord Llewellyn did achieve this ambition , but today I suspect the Addicks are now his number one love.

If Nathan goes I am more bothered about who comes next and I would thank him for transforming failing squad like Bailey  but similar to Curbs in 2001 I don't think the timing is right.
  • What gives this story legs is his track record of jumping ship and taking on basket case clubs. In fact you could argue he took a basket case club with Charlton, with a an incompetent Methven and an interfering Scott. He won, they were sacked. He probably thinks he can do it again.

Nathan said he had spent time staying at Sparrows lane and not going home in an interview since the victory last Sunday.

As NJ is crazy and sensitive anything is possible as he is still upset with the personal abuse he took last November as he stated himself on the steps of Wembley.

We just have to hope that he feels the love now from the management and the majority of fans because he needs to stay focused on the next part of the Journey which is staying in the Championship and turn Cafc into a club that can average 20k at home and fill out the away end at every ground in the Championship and be nearer mid table that the bottom 3.

Football speculation is what drives football and has always been that way; Whether true or made up.

Nathan have completed the 1st part of ' Mission Impossible' since December now for the really hard part in the championship.

I think he can succeed and he wants to stay as he has found a new home.

So if that’s accurate Jones isn’t pushing and we want a hefty fee, sounds like a non starter to me
If that article is to be believed, he’s not saying no to it …

Football League World is click bait that preys on supporters worries to get clicks. Its mostly a negative take. Its like picking at a a scab on a wound. To be resisted most of the time.

That being said, it wouldn’t be surprising of NJ interested to hear of what Cardiff have to offer, its a plan B as football supporters are fickle & jobs at football clubs are not secure with a poor run of form. Keeping good communication with a prospective future employer is sensible.
Its strengthens NJ’s negotiating position with both clubs knowing that that he is sought after. This may be helpful at Charlton in tying to secure a budget to be successful.

We don’t know exactly what the relationship is with NJ & Charlton owners but NJ describes it as good. They did stick with him & back room changes staff are with him. Having achieved promotion, control over staff for his team & hopefully a healthy enough budget to compete & give the Championship a proper go, should be enough to resist new unpredictability of Tan’s Cardiff & going backwards to League One.

according to a Cardiff supporting mate he is on the short list
Scarlett Johansson is on mine. Doesn't mean anything
On both accounts, it could be said “they’re out of my league.”
  • Whatever happens it needs to be sorted now. If we don’t want him to go and he’s not pushing for a move then it needs to be a flat out no and move on. A few million in compensation doesn’t cover his loss.

Is that what counts for journalism these days? Just paragraph after paragraph of regurgitated speculation and a quote from a year ago. Pathetic clickbait shite
Exactly. It should not be graced by the description "article".

But this is why we get this shit coming out, less than a week after the match. It's not just bullshit. It's bullshit that people earn money from posting, and nothing can stop them from doing so.

Bielsa does it. Good enough for me. Also a weirdo. But a bloody good coach.

Cardiff has a toxic ownership, but never say never in football.

NJ will probably see what support he gets in this window before we will know his intentions.

Time for the yanks to put some real cash in.

Who saw Lennie toddling off to Middlesbrough ?

    I did.
From Memory, Lennie got the 06.15 from Kings cross🚂

This was Lennie's 1st really big contract as he didn't earn a fortune at CAFC despite earning  more than being a PE teacher or a head teacher.

So what's 'lol' about that ?
  • If he left, and that's a big if, then I can't see Tan giving him the time we did if he gets off to a shakey start, surely he's learnt from jumping a successful ship twice

Depends which club he thinks is most likely to be in the championship in 12 months time .  If he thinks there really is a project at Charlton and there will be funds, surely that’s here .  He will know more than we do on that score .
  • NJ is weird, but he is our weird
    That's it - we need a sleep-zone for fans at the Valley…….
  • It’s a funny old world.

Six months ago many posters on this forum would have volunteered to pay his fare to Cardiff!
