  • Crazy that Bethell is the next cab off the rank, when he has no centuries of any sort, and in 2025 has played ONE red ball game, scoring 20 and 12 for Warks against Somerset last month.
    Bethell did score 10, 50*, 16, 96, 12 & 76 (average 52.00) coming in almost immediately in NZ to replace Crawley who managed scores of 0, 1, 17, 8, 21 & 5 (average 8.67) and where the opening partnerships in the series were 9, 1, 12, 9, 32 & 8 - an average of 11.83 between "tall" and "short".
  • How many dot balls in a row?

The fifth ball of the 32nd over was the 28th consecutive dot.
  • A potential finger break for Pant could be massive for this game, and indeed the series.
  • Quite nice to watch a bit of gritty test cricket
  • 15 mins to go before tea. 45 overs bowled. I know there have been stoppages for injury to Pant & change of the ball but........

We wont be getting 90 overs in today. Not even if we played to 7pm.
  • Half century for Rooooot. 140/2

Been very slow today, heat can’t be helping but it is a bit ridiculous

It's a finger nail. India are waiting for a manicurist to arrive.
  • I think England have finally woken up to the fact that if you make the opposition bowlers bowl for a meaningful period of time then then will get knackered and it will also enable our bowlers to rest up. There will come a time for us to take the game to India but scoring too quickly overall doesn't necessarily help the cause.
I'd love this to be a constant from now on.
But I'm wondering if it's as much about the ball going soft so early.
  • Why the f@$% does Pope generally throw his bat from the first ball?
    !
  • Why waft at one like that first ball after the break. Dimwit!
  • The top 3 out on day 1, none of them to India's 3 main seamers.

Jurel I suspect is a better keeper than Pant. Maybe England need to have Foakes available on overseas tours so he can sub for Smith  ;)

    Thick as s%&t.
  • Big test for Stokes here

He'd better bat well as he's captaincy is shite. Wins the toss & decides to bowl when we should bat & vice versa.
  • I’ve not opened this thread since Jan.
Live view from the ground. The water taps are free but very slow. If you’re in the Edrich or Compton good luck with this heat. Many reports of sun stroke.
We’re in mound towards back and lovely breeze. Lunch on nursery was only bearable for about 7 minutes.
    Cider is refreshing.

I'm under cover in the Mound stand tomorrow. So glad I'm not in the open.

In a restricted view seat, but the view is decent enough.
  • We’re restricted view too. But it’s just outfield in front of tavern we can’t see. It’s the only affordable way to be here!
  • I’m literally directly opposite middle of grandstand in mound halfway back
  • This is - so far - an absolute masterclass by Joe Root.

    Will you be wearing red?
  • Stokes looks in quite a bit of trouble here.

At this rate, Root as well as top scoring will be bowling 20 overs.

Now it's flying ants ladybirds delaying things. I'm expecting a plague of locusts tomorrow.
