I don't expect Coady will play as CDM every game. It was a surprise to me that he olayed there at all as I wasn't aware in his early career he played CDM over 100 times (144 was mentioned by someone).

However in games where we play 2 wingbacks ans 2 up front to start, seems to work aas an option particularly if Coventry has a knock.

Also means Lloyd Jones and Coady can play at the same time as each other when we have a back 5.

Fair play to Jones for identifying this as an option.

Had a solid game. Many were sceptical about this one but his experience will only be a good thing.

Thought it was odd that he played CDM. Only Nathan Jones would play a 32yo who has played CB all his career, out of position. Worked today, but will it against 11 men for 90 mins? Who knows.

He started his career as a CDM and was moved further back by Wolves when they started to play a back 3

That's an interesting one. Although there is a couple of years between them, Lloyd Jones played with Coady in the same Liverpool U21 side. It's quite possible that Coady was a CDM at that time so Lloyd might have had some input re Coady's versatility.

Coady played CDM at the start of his career before switching to centre half.
He played yesterday because Coventry is carrying an injury.

Wondering if he will drop back for QPR to allow Lloyd to rest his ankle?

Lloyd might not need to rest it.

Did they? I thought Coady said Lloyd was two years behind him.

We played Jones last season with a fractured tibia, played him through illness at Brum, injury at Wrexham/Millwall/Derby. Only chance he doesn’t play if his ankle physically detatches from his body

I retain way too much useless information because I remember my reaction to seeing Coady at CB for the first time for Wolves and thinking no way that will work, he’s a midfielder.

Not really .  Let’s see how it pans out for the rest of the season - Leicester were really bad and had ten men for a lot of the game .  Other teams will give him no time on the ball whatsoever .  But he did a good job on Saturday - fair play .

I said that there was a couple of years between them but Coady confirms they played together here:

They are both named in Liverpool's U21 squad in 2012:

https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/124125-lfc-name-premier-league-squad#:~:text=The club has also named, and beyond the initial squad.

This extract explains that Jones took over the captaincy of the U21s when Coady was sent out on loan:

Jones was moved into the Under 18s squad for the 2012-13 season was also named in the youth squad to take part in the season's NextGen Series. The season proved a breakthrough for Jones who's acclaimed displays for the U18s and U19s in the NextGen Series brought him to the attention of the U21s. With slots opening up at centre back due to injury to Jakub Sokolik and the promotion of Andre Wisdom to the first team, Jones was brought into the fold for the U21s in the new year and played a number of games for the side, impressing throughout the season.

Jones' form brought him a place on the substitute's bench for the senior squad in an away League tie against Fulham on 12 May 2013. He was handed shirt number 51 for the occasion. At the end of the season, Jones signed his first professional contract with Liverpool. Jones appeared more times than any other player for the U21s during the 2013-14 season, competing in 21 of the team's 22 games. With Conor Coady away on loan, Jones eventually became entrusted with the captaincy of the U21s.

It definitely worked playing Caody there but it was a bit easy given the game circumstances. Still we need to chalk that down as a very good debut.

It can sometimes work with midfielders though. I remember City having to play Fernandinho there one year. Fabinho did it for Liverpool. Vincent Kompany played some of his early City career as a DM.

Even yesterday, Spurs looked miles better when Palhinha was moved to CB.

For us Alou Diarra was incredible at centre back and Pratley didn't do badly at all when he was forced to play there, especially given he was sometimes partnered with Chris Gunter
  • Mascherano was originally a CDM but spent his time at Barca as a CB. Many such cases.

Who did Brian Clough sign as his CDM when he took over at Derby?

Dave Mackay, who'd always been a defender.

    The 2 aren't mutually exclusive...

And Billy Bonds went the other way - RB to midfield to CB
  • Conor Coady just been interviewed on Sky Sports.
    Talks very professionally and positively.
    I like him. 👍

Even Amdy Faye managed a decent game at centre back.

I'm fairly sure Declan Rice started out as a centre back too. It's probably the easiest 2 positions to switch between
  • Having Coady in midfield should mean that our current CB’s are not dragged forward into midfield allowing us to keep our defensive shape when out of possession and the other team are attacking. I think his overall lack of pace will mean on occasions he is completely bypassed by opposition midfielders but I guess we’ll just have to see if the positives outweigh the negatives.

Eric Dier started at CB and went CM.

You could also go the full hog like Josh Magennis and go from GK to CF.

NJ has stuck to his guns and has decided to first and foremost shut up shop, Coady in as CDM shows this, along with the other defensive signings. It’s not going to be pretty for the rest of the season but we did start to look very leaky at the back. Put pressure on the forwards to be more clinical when the chances arrive. Think our score lines are going to be rather binary.

Still worry about the lack or legs he has but other than he looked very good in the holding midfielder role today
    The scouse Keith Jones.

Pirlo wasn't the world star until he moved to cdm - using his brain and dictating play. Barry Bannon is 4 years older and millwall think he can do a job for them. There's probably 2 places on the pitch you can get way with  not having the legs - CDM and Centre Half - looks like millwall have f**ked up.

Early contender for POTM in my opinion.

Two star studded performances, long may it continue!

All jokes about his legs being gone aside, but, since his arrival we're unbeaten in 3 conceding 0

    Experience and quality shining through.

He knows how to play, that’s as important as being able to play.

It also coincides with Bell coming back for Gillesphey, Clarke settling in and us having a natural left back again.
