I like the effort Doc puts in and he is better suited to playing the role that Coady is currently playing. Tidy up, get rid.
Reason being is that he is so limited on the ball. His passing, even if basic, is woeful. He cant play where he does and not have the ability to pass a simple ball.
Carey who carries the ball well and does some decent things at times just cant do the simplest thing...look up! Play a teammate in instead of just shooting against a defender 2 yards in front.
It isnt the strikers that were the issue, Portsmouth CBs are physical, I get the thinking but having a midfield who cant control a game is the worry. Ebou Adams done that on his own!10 -
Still fuming with that performance. We’re right back in the relegation dogfight.. sometimes I wonder what I’ve done wrong in a previous life to be inflicted with the love of this football club. One step forward, two steps back. And we have 2 away matches to look forward to. Oh, deep joy Think I’ll stick with the rugby on Saturday😮💨4

Out of interest did he achieve that with hoof ball or did he change the style of play once established in the Championship?ForeverAddickted said:BigDiddy said:

We're at 7 points from 12 since the Millwall performance - not terrible for a relegation-fighting team. We're also 7 points from the relegation spots and have shown real fight Vs Stoke and QPR.
I thought a few things went against us today early in the game and it was enough to rock us.
1. The ref simply wouldn't allow any contact between players which goes against our playing style.
2. Kiminski gifting Pompey a goal
3. A terrible decision by the ref to award a penalty
It's disappointing we couldn't recover but that's life in the Championship. Those whining and moaning about where we are in the table would be happier if we were 4th in League One. We're a new championship team - these results will happen.
For what's it worth, I thought the Portsmouth players were a credit to their badge tonight. Fought really hard and deserved the win.
We were shite tonight and NJ is clueless when things go wrong.
Do you think we should be comfortably mid table?
NJ is not a long term solution, in my view. Its too early to tell... This season was all about survival and nothing else2019/20 he did that with Luton, 2020/21 he got them 12th, 2021/22 he got them 6th (lost in the Play-Offs), 2022/23 he left the club in November but left them in 10th, and sowed the seeds for their promotion that season.Does that sort of trajectory sound so awful?0 -
Problem is the ref was giving those as fouls elsewhere.Leeds_Addick said:

Ramsay definitely should have given a penalty away near the end though, he falls to the floor and controls the ball dead with his hand. Ref was 10 yards away with a clear view and didn’t spot it somehow6 -

Midfield issue for me is we’ve been asking Carey to become more of an 8 than a 10. He’s playing in line with Doc most of the time which means when he does get the ball he’s miles from goal and wasn’t nullify as he never really passes. It also meant Adams and Pack had tonnes of time and space to asses the game. If Carey is 15 yards higher up the pitch harassing them then the game looks very differentking addick said:I like the effort Doc puts in and he is better suited to playing the role that Coady is currently playing. I cannot remember the last time Docherty played a forward pass that went to a red shirt. He either passes it back or sideways or gives the ball away. As a result the opposition midfield either has time to organise themselves or gets the ball to their feet. Disastrous either way.king addick said:I like the effort Doc puts in and he is better suited to playing the role that Coady is currently playing. Tidy up, get rid.

Not sure who you're referring to here? In case it was me I haven't mentioned that he should be immune from being criticised. I'm saying that depending on the result he's either best thing since sliced bread, or the worst hoofball manager ever and should be sacked.AberystwythAddick said:No one is immune from criticism. I genuinely wonder if our passage of play training at Sparrows Lane is let the ball drop out the sky and then boot it, cos we have no other game plan.5

I still think we'll stay up, and I still think it will be more to do with how poor those are below us.
We've been fortunate that it's only two relegation places that are up for grabs this year, and we will need to spend some serious money in the summer if we are to do anything but struggle again.9 -

They’re all ‘ifs’ though Cal and you can pretty much work most results that way. ‘If Sheff U didn’t get 2 men sent off…’ ‘if Leicester scored their penalty, or took any of their 21 shots v 9, or 1.98 xg v 1.31…’ etcCallumcafc said:

Charlton 0.80
Pompey 1.14 (0.79 came from a very harsh pen so 0.35 otherwise)
Don’t think Jones is wide of the mark to say we had the better chances. But I won’t argue we did enough to deserve to win the game.
If Kaminski doesn’t flap and Devlin doesn’t spank one in off the post, we’re talking about a 1-1 draw with a harsh Pompey penalty.
I missed a chunk of the first half, but from what I saw, we were awful last night, but it wasn’t an outliner. If you analysed the last four months you’d conclude to pick up points we need either the opposition to be reduced or really not be at the races:
Nov - West Brom 1-0 late winner - WB last 4 games were 3 losses, 1 draw and have continued to flounder
Dec - Oxford 1-0 - Ox run at that point was 1 win in 10
Jan - Sheff U 1-0 - Sheff U 9 men 1st half
Jan - Leicester 2-0 - Leicester early 10 men, massive low around club and have lost 7 of last 8 games
Feb - Stoke 1-0 - Stoke now no wins in 8

Right on the edge of the area, clearly not intentional, his arm wasn’t stretched out in order to make himself bigger, the ball was whacked at him with some speed. Any sensible ref would have processed all that and given a free kick on the edge of the area IMHO. Sky team thought it was very soft FWIW.bobmunro said:

Fair play to the ref. By the 91st minute he finally seemed to understand the game and players.
A poor performance, and one we did not expect at home. Let's just try to reset and go again. We all wanted that roller coaster ride to finishing 21st! 😉1 -

That combined with the fact our groundsmen haven't been able to work out how to control the weather yet. Probably Jones' fault.4 -

Some/most refs /assistants would give the pen (he had both arms stretched out so irrespective if it was intentional or not) but why give a free kick on the edge of the box when the ball clearly hits his hand/arm in the box? The fact he had a foot outside the area is neither here nor there.JamesSeed said:

Let's not forget what happened on the last day of the season when we was last here. We are away like we were at Leeds, if we go into the last game needing something it wont be good.Croydon said:I still think we'll stay up, and I still think it will be more to do with how poor those are below us.

We've been fortunate that it's only two relegation places that are up for grabs this year, and we will need to spend some serious money in the summer if we are to do anything but struggle again.Leeds had won the title though, and wanted to end the season on a high, I won't be surprised if they were equally a bit pissed off with the Leko / Casilla drama from earlier on in the season - Always impossible to tell what'll happen, but hopefully Swansea will be on the beach by then. Then again I thought Leeds would be on the beach as well lol!Blackburn vs. Leicester looks a lovely final day of the season game, if they're still both in trouble, whilst Sheff Wed vs. West Brom looks horrible.1 -

We are a team that sets up to keep things tight and nick a goal. There can be nothing more gut wrenching than seeing your keeper make such a balls up,thereby wrecking that planning. He did it against Stoke Away and Millwall, also at the Valley palmed a shot back into play for their leveller.Time for Mannion to come back.5

It's a shame that we don't seem to able to grind out our must not lose games but so it goes. Can't quite believe that Portsmouth are the first team to do the double over us this season but then they're exactly the kind of team we struggle against; quick passing teams who try and overload through the middle. We had no answer for it last night, after seemingly solving our midfield getting run through issues it looked like a game too far for Coady and he was completely absent. Carey as usual didn't offer a great deal apart from moments near the goal but once again he got tunnel vision and hit easily blocked shots instead of looking for the pass that was on. I know he's our top scorer and I know he is overall a good player but all I'm saying is I'm starting to regret letting him so near my fictional wife because we get about 0.75 promising openings a game and he's wasting them with his stupidity. Portsmouth were very aggressive against our wingbacks and that really shut us down, Chambers and Clarke offer relief for our midfield who can't play out of tight spaces and by funneling us centrally Portsmouth could always get the ball back and then break through the spaces.Up front I can see why Jones went with Dykes and Leaburn because it was so effective against a fragile Leicester side and you'd fancy them to bully that makeshift defence. It worked within a minute but it felt like after Clarke's miss and the first yellow we just completely disappeared into ourselves. Couldn't adapt to the ref's antics and couldn't pivot to a calmer game. Beyond that though Portsmouth scored a speculative long shot that shouldn't have gone in and a screamer that clipped the woodwork (the real issue there again is the absent midfield giving them the chance to line these shots up) and a penalty that was just ridiculous. I know his arm isn't taped to his side but it's so close to him and his arm has to go somewhere. You can argue the ref is just following the stupid rules but games getting changed because someone drills a ball into a player's arm from a yard away is just not how football should be. Beyond that I don't think Portsmouth created much of anything and on another day that probably goes to a dull 0-0 draw. We do seem to occasionally collapse at home this season which is weird but we're surprisingly resilient away so all's not lost. It's frustrating to lose to a team below us but this is how it's going to be unfortunately. We'll be good some weeks and rubbish others without any real pattern because that's how it is in this division when you're not one of the big boys. Across the next 14 games we just need to go on two more little runs like we did between the Millwall and Portsmouth games and we'll be fine. A couple of wins and draws amongst some losses is the best most teams at this level can hope for and we're no different.Listen to Gennaro. Gennaro knows:

Yes, if you look at the teamsheets you can see that they had a lot more players with single digit squad numbers than we did. It looks more like the injuries forced them to revert to what they thought would be their principle XI when the season started.ForeverAddickted said:1968CAFC said:Forgetting the ref was a totally inconsistent wanker, if we carryon playing like we did tonight we will go down !!
utter shite against a reserve team 👎👎👎Sorry but at least do your research, people are looking at the 14-injuries and are simply presuming the worstGoalkeeper- Schmid: 21-games this season, missed a few earlier in the season with an injury, but first choiceDefence- Poole; 28-games...
