Norwich City visited the Valley today looking to reignite whatever embers of a playoff push they have left after their midweek defeat to Southampton. Despite that defeat, they’re a side in very good form. Quids for a Kid day helped to push the crowd to over 20,000, with the Addicks themselves looking to finish the season strong. This one started off quite lively, with Lyndon Dykes putting an almost immediate late challenge on his Norwich defender. But it wasn’t long before Norwich’s class became apparent.

Norwich broke through with only about four minutes on the clock. Working down their left the ball was passed inward to Mattsson on the edge of the box. His first touch helped him to elude his marker, taking him more central where he unleashed a shot through two defenders attempting to close him out, but who failed to get tight enough. The ball made it’s way through traffic and into the back of the net through the diving Will Mannion, giving him little chance of saving it.

Charlton had a half chance minutes later when Harry Clarke’s low and driven long throw was headed back into the centre of the box by a Norwich defender but the ball was then cleared before Luke Chambers could angle his body for a shot. Norwich then had a similar opportunity to the one that they scored, only to be foiled by a very good Mannion save.

By halfway through the first half, Charlton had manufactured some half chances but no shots on or off target, only moments of potential. Conversely, the visitors were slick and quick in possession and aggressive without the ball and well worth their lead. On 25 minutes Norwich turned a Charlton attack into a counter that found Kvistgaarden in the box against Lloyd Jones, whose last-ditch tackle momentarily saved any further damage when Kvistgaarden shot wide. But the pressure was only further mounting on the home side. The first half finished with only the one goal.

No changes at halftime for Charlton, personnel wise, but Nathan Jones would need a strategic shift to counter Norwich’s dominance. Charlton did get off to a good start. Lyndon Dykes won some battles and Tyreece Campbell got into good positions on the ball looking to make something happen. But it was a Luke Chambers floated free kick from deep that forced the Norwich keeper to parry the cross-cum-shot away. Then Harry Clarke’s cross from the other side forced another save, before a Dyke’s header almost put Lloyd Jones of all people in on goal after he stayed forward from the previous attack.

Some ten minutes in Norwich found a way through on the break but the final low cross into the centre was parried away by Will Mannion and easily cleared. Luke Chambers made way for Miles Leaburn, dropping Tyreece Campbell back in the left wingback position.

Tyreece Campbell was the threat down the left when getting forward. His foray made it all the way to the line before his low cross into the box was snuffed out. His next burst forward saw him beat multiple defenders and force a corner. Whipped in, the ball found Kayne Ramsay leaping at the far post to head onto the crossbar, before falling to Harry Clarke, some seven yards out. His follow up was blocked away for another corner. Only a few moments later, Lloyd Jones was yanked down in the box in what seemed a clear penalty but the referee was unmoved, despite being well positioned to see the infraction for what it was. Not as polished as the visitors, nonetheless, Charlton were in this.

And Charlton remained in the mix largely because of a couple of absolutely outstanding Will Mannion double saves that kept Norwich at bay. Yes, not one double save, but two! On about 70 minutes Jayden Fevrier replaced Conor Coventry; Nathan Jones making another attacking substitution.

Just after 80 minutes a cute bit of interplay between Harry Clarke and Miles Leaburn developed into a shot from Sonny Carey on the edge of the box that was blocked away. I felt, with his Norwich connections, Sonny Carey might be the one to claw back the equaliser, if only for the kind of poetic occurrences that often happen in these situations, but Charlton were now running out of time.

Ramsay and Campbell were replaced by Joe Rankin-Costello and Charlie Kelman, again, largely progressive changes aimed at finding the elusive equaliser, with only a few minutes of regular time remaining. Norwich, by this time, had resorted to abundant time wasting so it was no surprise when a minimum of five minutes was added, though it was hardly generous given the multitude to substitutions and the time wasting.

Charlton worked hard to neutralise the well-drilled Norwich side and, perhaps, deserved the equaliser that never came. In the dying moments a well driven Harry Clarke throw was headed on by Lloyd Jones, or Lyndon Dykes in collaboration, before falling to Charlie Kelman. His cross eventually fell to Sonny Carey on the edge of the box, but it was deflected and then almost re-deflected by a ducking Rankin-Costello, but it wasn’t sent in on goal, only out for a final corner. Nothing came of it and the match ended in defeat. The lack of that extra bit of quality in the final third was the difference that couldn’t be made up for by the shear weight of hard work the team put in.

The penalty claim will be the main talking point, I’m sure. Nathan Jones was far from happy with the officials for that, as well as the ball that was fired into the crowd from a Norwich player that had ventured into his technical area; a reaction he couldn’t hide, calling the player all manner of names. He also wasn’t having it when the Norwich manager was trying to talk to him after the final whistle!

Charlton 0 Norwich 1
Over to you.

Poor ref, definite pen. That said, no real complaints about the result over 90 minutes.

Very strange game... In part Norwich deserved their win, they were a team that should have been fighting for the top six had Liam Manning not hindered their season to begin with, and on another day could have won about 4-0... They didnt though, and we grew into the game, and when TC went to Left Wing-Back, we actually started to create more problems for them to think about.
As a result a point might have been a fair result, but for the ridiculous time wasting from Norwich, which was aided by an incompetent Referee.
Always thought it would be a tight affair though, Norwich have now conceded two goals in five games, losing just once, so with our own inability to convert chances, I thought it would be a difficult afternoon regardless, and would have been happy with a 0-0 before KO.
Norwich, Ipswich and Hull were probably the three hardest games left though, so we move on to the next one now.

We’ve played a lot worse and got results . Norwich have quality where as we lack it desperately.
Thought Campbell had a really good second half , it’s just a shame Carey left his shooting boots at home today .
Apart from West Brom , the results favoured us again and I’m beginning to think that 48 points its probably already enough .

Same as you. Even though we lost, I feel more confident of staying up, 1 game less, looking like Oxford and Pompey my favs to go down. Which would be a successful season for us

    Exceptionally frustrating.
we just didn’t do anything right in the attacking third.

too many misplaced passes, not winning May first or second balls, ball wasn’t sticking up top. Usually the midfield is buzzing around the STs but we just weren’t near any dropping ball.

unfortunately the bench doesn’t have any exciting Game changers - Leaburn is as positive as it can get at the moment.

Take it on the chin, but disappointing to have performed like that for 70mins or so and have all of our fluster and attack with 10 to go!

Investment needed in summer, if we are to become a team like Norwich
  • 5 minutes of added time - WTF?

Stonewall penalty as well from where I was sitting.
    Ref should be investigated.

How the hell did the Lino miss that penalty let alone the ref?
You don’t see Lino’s put the flag across the chest any more. It was so blatant.
    Good graft second half.
Old boss, who was a pompous tool, is a Norwich fan so it made a frustrating game even more frustrating

    Meh.

Only so much you can complain when you don’t start playing until the 60th minute but what chance do you have with a ref like that? Getting properly sick of the levels we’re having to put up with on a weekly basis, from not stopping time wasting, stopping play when we’re moving forward with the ball, blatant penalty turned down and then only giving 5 minutes of added time when there was one stoppage alone in the second half that lasted 4-5 minutes (obviously from a fake injury which then allowed them to waste more time getting off the pitch).

Thought Norwich were the same as pretty much every other mid table team we’ve played this season - move the ball around nicely but don’t really do much with it as seen in the second half. Properly tinpot from their two players celebrating like that in front of our fans after the game as well. Very odd.

By season's end we might be the only team in Christendom that didn't score against Norwich.

We need to find a way of getting a win in the next couple of games otherwise we’ll be looking over our shoulder again.

Why is it we nearly always play poor first half in games at home

If a side can only score a maximum of one goal per game then it’s hard work to get positive results.

Given that we’ve definitely done very well this season but Jones has to find a way to set us up so we create a bit more.

Nathan spitting blood at The Norwich manager and Ref, no doubt about the non penalty, and blatant time wasting not stamped on, these inept refs keep getting away with even more inept performances, I'm pissed off big time that we don't seem to start playing until the last 15 minutes, Norwich were ok, but nothing special, anyway still 9 points clear and we go again Good Friday V Bristol City and Easter Monday V Watford...COYR.

Very frustrating game, early goal really helped their gameplan, which seemed to consist of wasting time, throwing themselves to the floor, and occasionally run at our defence that decided to backpedal 30 yards instead of engaging.

Second half in particular we tried to turn the screw, but they just held us at arms length and did all they could to break our momentum, which was helped by the clueless referee buying all their tactics and not adding on sufficient time at the end

Not pretty to watch but I think all of us were not entirely surprised. Grudgingly Norwich were a good team and we looked like a team that have just come up. I think our saving grace might be everyone running out of games and I'm pleased our goal difference is good compared to Pompey who have, on paper, a dreadful looking run in.

Let's hope we can give a better account against Bristol City who have fallen away quite badly and maybe a 2 week break might be what we need.

I can see ugly games ahead with draws being enough to inch across the line.

Two things have made me livid. Firstly that was a definite penalty and when you think of the one that was awarded against us last week it makes you wonder. Secondly, they were taking such an age on set pieces any decent ref would have added on a proper amount of time. Norwich are a decent side but we improved second half and I feel cheated by the official.
  • Frustrating.
    - Clear pen
    - no-one willing to take a shot in front of goal
    - Why didn't Kelman start?
    - TC is not a striker
    - Norwich have 13 players out and we still can't give them a game

Could have lost by more but could also have taken a point. A weird one.

midfield and forward line needs an overhaul next season because we will go down if we don’t.

    Ref was a wanker
