POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic v Norwich City: Saturday 21st March 2026: KO 15:00

Norwich City visited the Valley today looking to reignite whatever embers of a playoff push they have left after their midweek defeat to Southampton. Despite that defeat, they’re a side in very good form. Quids for a Kid day helped to push the crowd to over 20,000, with the Addicks themselves looking to finish the season strong. This one started off quite lively, with Lyndon Dykes putting an almost immediate late challenge on his Norwich defender. But it wasn’t long before Norwich’s class became apparent.

Norwich broke through with only about four minutes on the clock. Working down their left the ball was passed inward to Mattsson on the edge of the box. His first touch helped him to elude his marker, taking him more central where he unleashed a shot through two defenders attempting to close him out, but who failed to get tight enough. The ball made it’s way through traffic and into the back of the net through the diving Will Mannion, giving him little chance of saving it.

Charlton had a half chance minutes later when Harry Clarke’s low and driven long throw was headed back into the centre of the box by a Norwich defender but the ball was then cleared before Luke Chambers could angle his body for a shot. Norwich then had a similar opportunity to the one that they scored, only to be foiled by a very good Mannion save.

By halfway through the first half, Charlton had manufactured some half chances but no shots on or off target, only moments of potential. Conversely, the visitors were slick and quick in possession and aggressive without the ball and well worth their lead. On 25 minutes Norwich turned a Charlton attack into a counter that found Kvistgaarden in the box against Lloyd Jones, whose last-ditch tackle momentarily saved any further damage when Kvistgaarden shot wide. But the pressure was only further mounting on the home side. The first half finished with only the one goal.

No changes at halftime for Charlton, personnel wise, but Nathan Jones would need a strategic shift to counter Norwich’s dominance. Charlton did get off to a good start. Lyndon Dykes won some battles and Tyreece Campbell got into good positions on the ball looking to make something happen. But it was a Luke Chambers floated free kick from deep that forced the Norwich keeper to parry the cross-cum-shot away. Then Harry Clarke’s cross from the other side forced another save, before a Dyke’s header almost put Lloyd Jones of all people in on goal after he stayed forward from the previous attack.

Some ten minutes in Norwich found a way through on the break but the final low cross into the centre was parried away by Will Mannion and easily cleared. Luke Chambers made way for Miles Leaburn, dropping Tyreece Campbell back in the left wingback position.

Tyreece Campbell was the threat down the left when getting forward. His foray made it all the way to the line before his low cross into the box was snuffed out. His next burst forward saw him beat multiple defenders and force a corner. Whipped in, the ball found Kayne Ramsay leaping at the far post to head onto the crossbar, before falling to Harry Clarke, some seven yards out. His follow up was blocked away for another corner. Only a few moments later, Lloyd Jones was yanked down in the box in what seemed a clear penalty but the referee was unmoved, despite being well positioned to see the infraction for what it was. Not as polished as the visitors, nonetheless, Charlton were in this.

And Charlton remained in the mix largely because of a couple of absolutely outstanding Will Mannion double saves that kept Norwich at bay. Yes, not one double save, but two! On about 70 minutes Jayden Fevrier replaced Conor Coventry; Nathan Jones making another attacking substitution.

Just after 80 minutes a cute bit of interplay between Harry Clarke and Miles Leaburn developed into a shot from Sonny Carey on the edge of the box that was blocked away. I felt, with his Norwich connections, Sonny Carey might be the one to claw back the equaliser, if only for the kind of poetic occurrences that often happen in these situations, but Charlton were now running out of time.

Ramsay and Campbell were replaced by Joe Rankin-Costello and Charlie Kelman, again, largely progressive changes aimed at finding the elusive equaliser, with only a few minutes of regular time remaining. Norwich, by this time, had resorted to abundant time wasting so it was no surprise when a minimum of five minutes was added, though it was hardly generous given the multitude to substitutions and the time wasting.

Charlton worked hard to neutralise the well-drilled Norwich side and, perhaps, deserved the equaliser that never came. In the dying moments a well driven Harry Clarke throw was headed on by Lloyd Jones, or Lyndon Dykes in collaboration, before falling to Charlie Kelman. His cross eventually fell to Sonny Carey on the edge of the box, but it was deflected and then almost re-deflected by a ducking Rankin-Costello, but it wasn’t sent in on goal, only out for a final corner. Nothing came of it and the match ended in defeat. The lack of that extra bit of quality in the final third was the difference that couldn’t be made up for by the shear weight of hard work the team put in.

The penalty claim will be the main talking point, I’m sure. Nathan Jones was far from happy with the officials for that, as well as the ball that was fired into the crowd from a Norwich player that had ventured into his technical area; a reaction he couldn’t hide, calling the player all manner of names. He also wasn’t having it when the Norwich manager was trying to talk to him after the final whistle!
