We could really do with Millwall being in play for autos on the final day. I just don’t buy the idea that they will go full tilt if autos aren’t at stake - a defeat really isn’t a big deal for them and wouldn’t kill any momentum. It would just be framed (understandably) as not risking injuries and staying fresh for a huge play off push. They also have been better away than home recently, so that’s a factor for the Oxford game but also in it not being a disaster for them if their second play off leg is away. That might even suit them

My most calming thought is that Oxford looked like a side that had run out of steam and had no confidence against Wrexham. The Wendies meanwhile put in another good performance in midweek. Oxford playing Brannagan as a 10 with Donley sat on the bench suggested to that Bloomfield was getting desperate and just throwing things at the wall to see what stuck. I have a feeling they’ll slip up on Saturday

Where have we seen that recently?

Agree though, Oxford might be the only team on par with us in terms of how bad they are in possession.
  • I’m actually the opposite. I’ve been expecting it for so long based on what’s been unfolding in front of us - that I’ve woken up calmer about Charlton than I have for ages!

I'm similar - not expecting the downfall necessarily (or the bit about being calmer!) - but fully aware of the implications of switching off for the run in. Nearly safe is not safe.

Not digging out any comments on here in any way, but last night and this morning there are plenty of genuine comments that describe the situation as if it's crept up from nowhere. It hasn't. As fans, we're allowed to feel that, and expect to get over the line, so just to say again, I'm digging none of us out.

But taking this mindset as a barometer - that we'll get over the line - or we'll be ok as Oxford won't catch us - I fear that thinking has crept in at Sparrows Lane, the very last place we need it.

I don't buy that the players are not good enough, within the context of the last 8 games. The performance and desire and collective pressing was all well and good last night - but it was needed over the last month, not last night.

Same performance again on Saturday and we should be ok, it's within our capability.

Regardless of home/away form, i think any team would always prefer to have the 2nd leg at home.

If Southampton and Middlesbrough both match Millwall's result at Leicester then because of their inferior goal difference, Millwall would still need something on the last day to secure top 4. And of course it's highly possible that they'll still be in with a chance of getting 2nd.

Perfect summary. My only question mark is whether that performance again on Saturday will be enough - second half was wretched
  • This concept that a team going into playoffs would be happy to lose their final game is fucking nuts.

If it is Millwall they are going to want to win that game to keep momentum and give the players some belief.

You having a laugh if you think their players care that if they lose it will potentially send us down.

It’s not about being happy to lose, it’s about approaching it with a much greater priority (the play-offs) front and centre of their minds which leads them to play at 90% and the temptation to rest players etc.

If their shot at the autos is gone, losing to Oxford won’t kill any momentum for them or hurt any of their belief.

You had one job last night!! Just one job!! One measly point was all that was needed to send all of us south east London brethren home happy.  But ooooo no, you couldn’t do that one small job could you.

Don’t worry, we’ll bail you out on the last day of the season. Just a shame you couldn’t play your part last night. You will owe us one though 😉

Going into the playoffs having lost to the team who at the time sat in the relegation zone on the last day of the season would stall momentum and knock confidence

let's talk about Portsmouth then eh?
You'll probably lose to Oxford too.

Is it possible for us to ever owe you one with the amount of wins you've had off us?

I am glad we are on at a different time to Oxford on Saturday. At least we won't have to all be nervously looking at our phones all game

Apart from a 3 game winning run at the end of Feb/beginning of March, Oxford have not won 2 games in a row all season.

    There, that's f***** it.

Unless we get a result against Hull, it stretches the agony out all afternoon though.

We lose to Hull, the players do their end of season lap of honour, and NJ does his thank you speech, to the small number of people left in the ground, while everyone spend their afternoon glued to their phones, desperately hoping for good news from the Oxford game...

If Bell, TC and Godden r out it will be very difficult to even draw a game - I’m amazed Bell played LWB - gets injured every time - I actually think it will be settled Saturday though - We can get a draw but I think Sheff Wed r gonna be our saviours - Millwall are more likely to shoot themselves in the foot than help us on the last day

Coburn to score the goal that keeps Charlton up. It’s written in the stars 😂

I'd be very surprised if Millwall aren't with a chance of the automatics come the final game of the season. Toxic Leicester away is a perfect game for them, while Ipswich have a resurgent WBA away, followed by Southampton away, two tough games.

If they can win both they'll deserve automatic promotion, but it's more likely that they'll drop at least 2 points.

Horrible as it is to say we probably want a Millwall win tomorrow night to make it more likely that they are still in with a shout of autos going in to the final day.

It will go to the last day purely because this is the most elaborate revenge attempt ever, to avenge Ronnie Schwartz and missing the playoffs to Oxford on the last day....

To be fair, we beat Middlesbrough not too long ago, which gave you lot a big boost! 😎
And with the draw against Southampton and beating Ipswich earlier in the season, not forgetting how we rolled over to have our tummies tickled at the Den - I’d say we’re in credit with you!

And that’s before you look at the last 30 years!! 😂

Not sure if I’m just trying to delude myself to stop myself from panicking but Sheffield Wednesday’s team has definitely gotten better since the start of the season . Charles, Lowe, Palmer, Chalobah, Yates, Lowe all players with previous championship experience, add Adaramola and Heskey who are promising prem loans and then the other youngsters surely would have gotten better as the seasons gone on. Think they could potentially nick a point

Agree, Sheff Wed will be turning up to win - if Oxford win they'll have to earn it.

If we get our point against Hull I'd expect Sheff Wed to beat a deflated Oxford.

You wouldn’t be where you are if it wasn’t for us son. 4 of the easiest points you got this season!

If everybody is being realistic, Wednesday will want to get one over on a team which look the most likely that they will face next season! We are not down and out just yet!

They could lose, but it's perfectly realistic for Wednesday to get a point or even win, as neither team score many goals, but both have been pretty solid in recent weeks. Wednesday have only conceded 3 goals in the last 4 games.

Charles in goal has been really good. He was missing last night, hopefully he'll be back on Saturday.
