Joe Rankin-Costello signs from Blackburn

Surely before we commit to a signing we check the basics of speed / strength / power? I know we were a bit late to the party last year because of promotion via the play offs but it doesn’t take away the need to utilise the data that’s out there on players these days. Wouldn’t a medical include a basic fitness test too? It does seem like we didn’t do comprehensive homework on some of last season’s signings - an expensive mistake.1

From what it seems Jones does obsessive homework on all his signings. Showing them videos about where they’ll fit in and how he will play them.Weegie Addick said:Surely before we commit to a signing we check the basics of speed / strength / power? We have achieved what we set out to do so the summer (and winter) recruitment did what it needed to. I still think JRC may have a role to play after the summer signings.1 -
He was obviously down the list of targets, with Galbraith being top of the list. I guess we had to sign someone otherwise Anderson would’ve played a lot more9

Needs to really work on his fitness and work rate this summer. I feel like if he improved his athleticism he’d be some player. Lots of times he’s been lethargically jogging when defending after about 60 mins. Probably the best technician in our midfield, though.3

I think we signed him because we wanted to bring in some championship level quality technically and he was the only player we could afford that had it. He might be more involved as we progress and there are more home games where we have more of the ball, but I can just never see him being a regular starter under JonesCrispywood said:Makes me think why on earth was he signed in the first place. He'd be great in a side where they're much more focused on playing possession or try playing through the lines, where hes not expected to cover much area.
Just the complete opposite of midfielders we've seen Jones use in the last 2 and a half years2 -
I never understood why we were so desperate to sign Knibbs. With his transfer fee and wages we could have signed a better engine room midfielder than Rankin-Costello.1

Trying to ensure we had depth and goals in the squad I imagine.killerandflash said:I never understood why we were so desperate to sign Knibbs. With his transfer fee and wages we could have signed a better engine room midfielder than Rankin-Costello.
We also missed out on Galbraith, which might have changed things.
With Knibbs, we rightly wanted another goalscoring attacking midfielder as there was no guarantee Carey would make the impact that he did. We’d have been left with Berry and Fullah as alternatives. Even NJ knows Berry isn’t really up to the Championship anymore, and Fullah wasn’t ready to be a regular starter.

As I've said. A good footballer's brain, in a bad footballer's body.
Those who say Doc and Cov are slow, watch JRC. Also, has no stamina. Dead on his feet after 60 minutes. So, no real point starting him. Get him on against a tiring team, and he might prove effective. No evidence of that Saturday, though...0 -
Played 2 beautiful passes for Leaburn through the lines and nearly scored as well. He definitely can be effective in the final 3rd problem is in transition when the game opens up and others get tired you can’t expect him to cover the ground like Docherty doesSteveACS said:As I've said. Must’ve used a fair amount of cash on effects to make that bench look interesting enough for him to signRC_CAFC said:

My opinion has gone in waves with JRC, wasn’t overly excited by his signing but understood the need for champ experience, then saw him and thought WTF!!, then didn’t see him for ages, then we did and thought why has he not been playing?, however after some fleeting appearances realised he was pretty average, basically I’ve concluded I just don’t really get the signing of him at all and I don’t see how he gets any better, pretty similar to a lot of our squad, wouldn’t be surprised if he’s offloaded.0
-
I agree that I can’t see him making much of an impact moving forward - neat and tidy, but not anywhere near imposing enough technically or physically. Was really good over Xmas but hasn’t kicked on, and Watford away was really really poor unfortunately0
-
Can’t see JRC staying…was at the Cov game and he was great….I do agree he is not athletic enough though…Saturday was strolling around after coming on….dont think he wants to play for NJ who doesn’t fancy him2
-
Is he not athletic enough, or has he not been playing enough football to get himself match fit?3
-
Engine wise when he clearly he gets tired after 60 I think you could apply to match time. Lack of pace getting up and down the pitch is just a lack of athleticism so a bit of both.Chunes said:Is he not athletic enough, or has he not been playing enough football to get himself match fit?2 -
Does it not seem more likely that we just couldn’t get our primary targets and had to settle for who we could get?Weegie Addick said:Surely before we commit to a signing we check the basics of speed / strength / power? He does well for someone who plays in deep sea diving boots10

Im kinda hoping that he and a few others were bought for future seasons after we established ourselves in the Championship, (you have to buy players when they become available), and maybe with an eye to more expansive seasons.2
-
I don't see how it's fair to judge any player based on late substitutions ( invariably when we are chasing the game) and the odd 90 minutes here and there
Any player needs a 4/5 game run of 90 minutes to get fully up to speed. He's never had that.
He has, intelligence, vision and an eye for goal.
To buy a midfield playmaker with all the attributes that we require, would cost a fortune.
It's possible that JRC could be that player once fully match fit and surrounded by more quality, in a team playing more expansive football.2 -

He just needs to put on a pair of bright yellow boots, grow out his hair and get a nice tan, then everyone will rave about our fancy new technical Italian midfielder3
