Different roles though. Coventry was better at the base of our midfield than Dobson was. Dobson was a better player and we should have kept him, but it’s Docherty he would have replaced in our set upCrispywood said:

A better all rounder you say…. Knock knock, George Dobson at the door. Proven championship player pushing for the play offs.killerandflash said:
We can certainly get someone who's a better all rounder than Coventry. Someone who can do the tidying and defensive work he does, but is more creative and dynamic. It'll cost us, both in wages and fee, but we do have some money to spend.Scoham said:Will be a useful squad player if he stays. I wouldn’t rule him out improving, but I can’t see how there won’t be players out there who we can sign to take his spot.
We won’t get an all rounder great at everything so I see that either being a more physical or more technical player. Either type would improve us.
Same goes for Doc, other than at his age he’s not got the same room to improve.
It's a question of priorities. Personally, I wanted a better central midfielder last summer, and would have prioritised that over some of the other signings we made.I am not saying he will come back, but was a travesty we let him go.2 -
Greg Docherty runs everywhere and can't pass the football: My captain O my captain

He never really goes near to the goal we’re attacking.5 -
And his "simple" passing is simply sideways and backwards.CafcSteve said:

He’s not supposed too. Both Coventry and Docherty are brilliant at covering ground, 2 of the fittest players we have.CafcSteve said:

He never really goes near to the goal we’re attacking.Coventry’s passing isn’t progressive enough, and he’s not physically strong so is losing more duels than he did in league 1. That’s his weak spots, and I’d imagine progressive passing and physical strength are definitely on the midfield shopping list this summer as it’s 2 areas we really lack3 -
I know but Doc’s job is to do exactly that.NabySarr said:

That’s why people have been praising him for doing so in recent weeks/months.0 -
Always a joy to see someone who basically regards himself as a club official slagging off members of the playing staff. Keep it up old boy3

In our system the main role of our midfield is to cover a lot of ground (both do this very well), and win second balls.Leuth said:Greg Docherty runs everywhere and can't pass the football: My captain O my captain
Conor Coventry runs everywhere and keeps his passing simple: rubbish foot baller get ridIn league 1 duels won per 90
Coventry - 5.63 won, 54.6% win rate
Docherty - 5.03 won, 46.2%
Both pretty solid, Coventry excelling
In the championship per 90
Coventry - 3.79 won, 47.7%
Docherty - 5 won, 52.6%
Coventry is not competing as well as he was in league 1 for those ground duels. The championship is physically a much stronger league and he has struggled with that. Docherty on the other hand is competing just fine3 -

Played over a weekend when there is a Premier League round of fixtures and the FA Cup final.
Also the Play Offs in the Championship will be taking place by then plus the Scottish Premiership as well.
Strange time for an international friendly but an opportunity for Coventry nonetheless3 -

Hip problem around December/January however you can probably Coady was better than at any point Coventry had been this seasonCafcSteve said:

His duel stats were much, much worse earlier in the season. How do I know? Unsurprisingly, I posted about it a good few times. I do remember that his tackle success rate was 25% around October, which was one of the lowest in the entire league.Leuth said:

Makes an international call up seem strange then, as would think that he’d be getting his injury sorted now.Leuth said:

Coady was more solid in his own box and offered set piece threat but with him in the side we didn't have someone with the mobility to pick it up in pockets across the field and distribute, so we basically didn't have any fluent attacking play with him on the field. Our best half hour in the last half of the season (opening half hour vs Preston) was without him, but equally, we showed some frailties at the back in that game. He was better at some things but not others and probably we can try to find someone who can do it all, but Coventry shouldn't be ruled out as an option at this level. I think he might drop to League One but only if say Leicester come callingCrispywood said:

Coady was physically stronger than Coventry which helped with winning those second balls, and he was also better on the ball than Coventry was. So overall he was better, even though he couldn’t cover the ground Coventry does
I’m fine with Coventry staying, he was good at the start of the season and is still at an age where we can develop him so he gets better. But we definitely will be shopping for an upgrade this summer3 -
I like Coventry a lot as a player but he needs proper competition in there for next season. Go get someone that's perhaps got a bit more size and physicality to their game that would be a useful change to be able to have say away from home.
Still think there's a good solid Championship CDM there with Coventry though.2 -

Coventry was the better player last season when we had more of the ball.
Doc was better this season being that bit stronger and more aggressive.
As you say their strength is that they can run everywhere. Neither have enough of what we need physically and on the ball to push usbup the league. Coventry is arguably just about young enough to improve with better players around him, but he’s 26 so doesn’t have time on his side in the way TC, Leaburn etc do.5 -
Although he’s 26, I think in football years he’s quite young. This season is pretty much only his second full season of first team footballScoham said:

Bulk him up a bit over the summer, work more on winning duels than getting round the pitch as much.0

If he's kept here, it's not like he's going to come into the team and let us down. He's just not that well-rounded as a footballer, and it holds us back when we're in possession.
To his credit, he plays within his own limitations. He can't pass very well, so he keeps it short. He doesn't have feet like Cullen, so he can't keep the ball in tight situations, and so he doesn't try to play through the press, and neither does he play on the half turn. What he does well is break up play, position himself defensively and keep it simple. He's good at what he does, but we need a little bit more than that.9 -

The only player in our squad that can play top 6 or above .. another outstanding season hampered by a hip injury since Jan5

Outstanding he was definitely, i'd be worried about any play off contender who don't make it or wolves/Burnley maybe spurs poaching him if they come down.RonnieMoore said:The only player in our squad that can play top 6 or above .. another outstanding season hampered by a hip injury since Jan1 -

He is one of those players who goes unnoticed but does a lot of the graft in midfield….get a creative mid in there who he can dish it off to and concentrate what he is good at ie tackling and breaking up play…I believe he is championship quality1
