Bethell hasn't played a Red ball game since January and his form in the IPL was pretty average at best.
Id be amazed if he gets a decent score in this Test.

When was the last time England's top three were all left-handers?

I've just checked - more recent than I thought but still difficult to recall mainly because I think it was for just one series.

I'm trying to remember who was at 3 when Cook/Carberry were opening, but then if it was Trott or Root that's not right anyway!

Cook, needless to say, was one of them. Incredibly, we had seven left-handers in this side that had three of them at the top.

In fact, yours is a great shout because Cook and Carberry were the openers on the previous occasion we had three left-handers at the top. The number three batted in that position in both of those sides and there were eight left-handers in that team, the most ever in an England side.

Without looking, was it Gary Ballance

Spot on. The Snail no less. Carberry was the opener in 2014 but who was the opener in 2017?

I was flying, but perhaps I flew a little close to the sun. Lyth then but as it's my second guess it doesn't count

The series in 2017 was against South Africa and the opener in question has as big a connection to that country as one could have.

The other random opener that springs to mind is Keaton Jennings...
(He was a Saffa wasn't he?)

    Well remembered!

The opener in 2017 against South Africa was Keaton Jennings. Born and raised there, he is the son of the former South African coach, Ray.

So the seven left-handers in that 2017 side were:

    Cook
    Jennings
    Ballance
    Stokes
    Moeen
    Broad
    Anderson

And the eight left-handers in 2014 (and I would defy anyone to name these) were:

    Cook
    Carberry
    Ballance
    Stokes
    Borthwick
    Broad
    Rankin
    Anderson

Assuming that there is no more rain in the meantime, the re-start is scheduled for 1.25pm

I doubt that England have ever had a top four of lefties so I checked with AI. It appears that we haven't but, as AI is now capable of predicting the future, it appears that we are going to in this match:

Yes, the England men's Test cricket team fielded a top four entirely composed of left-handed batsmen in June 2026.

During the Test match against New Zealand at Lord's, the top order featured:
    1. Ben Duckett
    2. Emilio Gay
    3. Jacob Bethell
    4. Joe Root (Note: While primarily right-handed, Root famously batted left-handed for a portion of this specific innings)

A very Bazball tactic,  batting the wrong way round. The positive option, running towards danger etc  :D
