Fantastically well taken penalty2

Yeah fair to say he didn’t exactly shin itfenaddick said:Fantastically well taken penalty1 -
No, not news, but I thought it was nice to see and mention on heregolfaddick said:
Not really news. What will be news is when you see a Costa Rica flag behind a Charlton goal 😀PrincessFiona said:Am sure I'm not the only one to see/comment on this - just seen a Charlton flag behing the Costa Rica goal0 -
What a pass from Eze before that miss0
-
Really haven’t been impressed with Rogers thus far.1
-
I was thinking the same thing but then thought he’s had a good last 5 mins or so. Looked sharp0
-
Dare I say we've looked a lot better since Bellingham went off1
-
That’s a bit mean seeing as we’ve used 11 subs!4
-
They’ve got me again, it’s coming home (this time it’ll work surely.)1
-
Good performance.Feels like Tuchel wants us to play pretty direct and through Gordon/Saka which is nice.
Midfield looks class. Very excited for the first game.0 -

Decent work out, albeit against a hugely inferior opponent1

Disappointing he found it so funny missing an open goal from 6 yards.ValleyGary said:Madueke picked to start. I’m hoping this is a plan to downplay our chances.0 -
Too busy giving attitude to the Costa Rican's.carly burn said:Dare I say we've looked a lot better since Bellingham went off0 -
I'm so confused as to how I've just missed that game. I've had ITV Player on in the background for the last few hours. It just kept repeating the last World Cup final highlights and the same old chat from Wright and Keane. I thought it was still delayed. Had no idea the game was going on!4

Perhaps should be noted for the nitty gritty stages.fenaddick said:Fantastically well taken penalty0 -
I'm shitting my pants at the first game. Croatia are not walk overs & I can see us losing that one.....and then we face Semenyo !Laddick01 said:Good performance.Feels like Tuchel wants us to play pretty direct and through Gordon/Saka which is nice.

Remember the "Golden Generation" of 20 years ago. Beckham, Owen, Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand........
We should get through our group but then when it comes to knockout football we often play poorly & get knocked out on pens.

No point going over old ground with the golden generation. Since then, aside from losing one final, we haven’t been knocked out on penalties for 20 years.golfaddick said:

Or to put it another way, I don’t care if people can’t be sure of getting home to their kids after work.Swindon_Addick said:Iran are claiming that their ticket allocation has been withdrawn. Obviously I'd advise caution in taking that at face value, but if true it would have to mean that Iranian Americans were being refused tickets, given that there's known to be a visa ban that would mean Iranians living in Iran wouldn't ever have been able to go.
Meanwhile, at at least one stadium there's a potential for strike action from workers who seem to be in part demanding that ICE be refused access.
I'm not a fan of what's going on in the US, but I hope this isn't going to ruin things for even more fans who've paid huge amounts to go to this.

I got that bit wrong, tournament not started yet and read this on BBC Sport website.iaitch said:
Agree with all that Prague.PragueAddick said:The case of the Somali referee is not the only one. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned what I think is an even worse case regarding the Iraqi player, who of course we've never heard of, but is apparently their star striker. He's been allowed in eventually, but only after a seven-hour grilling. Then we have the case of the Swiss player who had his ESTA placed under review at the last minute and couldn't travel (although is expected to, eventually)
WTF?
Would anyone like to imagine for me what kind of questions these clowns had to ask Aymen Hussein that could not have been asked before the Iraqi squad, whose names would have been listed in advance, left the country? The team photographer was not so lucky. They refused him entry.
Let's not grace this bollocks with the term "policy", please. If you are privileged enough (according to FIFA) to be selected to hold this tournament, then the very least you can do is show a normal level of hospitality towards their players and their senior officials. You get their details in advance, so review them and, if you have any questions, be good enough to promptly flag them up quickly to the country concerned and get them sorted before they set off. If that isn't your normal system, make a special exemption for these players. It's not going to be difficult, is it?
There are also now reports of some fans running into problems with last-minute reviews of their visa waivers.
Let's be absolutely clear: all of this is on Trump. As discussed above, none of this happened in Russia. That's because Putin is smarter than Trump. He realised what he had to do in order to get the best possible publicity from staging the event. Trump on the other hand wants to be the bully who chucks his weight around.
I am sure the vast majority of fans will have a great time, and hope to hear about them from Lifers who are there. But personally I wouldn't spend a dollar of my own money on this, or going to the States for any reason while he is running it. There's no way I'd be deleting this post and all my other social media posts which mention him in order not to have hassle at the border just because it might offend that world class ****.
No doubt after the tournament Infantino and his PR team will be gushing about how Trump arranged a brilliant World Cup and brought harmony, friendship and togetherness throughout the world!!
Probably give him another FIFA peace prize.
'And there was a robust defence of US President Donald Trump, with Infantino claiming a World Cup that will be largely played in the United States would have been "impossible" without the 79-year-old'.0 -

These are my final predictions...until I change my mind later today. An all Iberian final. Spain to win it all. England to the semi-finals on a largely easy path. Japan and Turkiye dark horses. It's all a bit chalk I think, but I also think with such a large field it's going to be chalk for the group stage and first round or two.
Edit: ignore me, just looked it up. How can I have got this old without having heard that before?

This wouldn't work because FIFA's requirements for stadiums are:bobmunro said:killerandflash said:
Just classify them as difference cities. City fans are always saying United aren't in Manchester, as they are in Trafford not Manchester...fenaddick said:
I assume they found a loophole/bribed their way out. And I believe it isn’t 2 per city, only 1 city can have 2. So you couldn’t use both Manchester grounds AND two London onesKarim_myBagheri said:
Is that true about 2 grounds per city? How many cities does Qatar have?fenaddick said:
We couldn’t host it within Fifa’s silly requirements. We simply don’t have the grounds big enough because some (like Anfield) don’t fit regulation and you can only have one city that has two stadiums. Four of the stadiums you’d want to use are in London. Outside of that you’re left with Old Trafford, Villa Park and St James Park. That isn’t enough infrastructure for Fifa’s rulesbobmunro said:The Red Robin said:Meanwhile England deemed not good enough to host a World Cup. All stadiums hosting quarters/semi must be minimum 60k.
Final has to be above 80k capacity.
These are obviously fine but the issue is all stadiums used must be minimum 40k which we don't have. With 48 teams at the WC now, the requirement is 16 stadiums.
We have 12 stadiums that are 40k+ and 5 are in London. You could add in Cardiff and Glasgow but unless they relax the rules on stadiums per city then it currently won't work.1 -
in fairness 1986 wasn't supposed to be them, they stepped in after Colombia withdrew from hosting it.ValleyGary said:Mexico have hosted 3 times. Fucking Mexico!!!
I also don't really class this tournament as them hosting. They have a few group games and then just 3 knockout games (with only 1 game after the round of 32). To me this is basically a USA world cup, with Canada and Mexico just tagging along.
There are 104 games and Mexico have 13, (Canada also have 13). The USA have 78.
If France were hosting the World cup and we had a handful of games, would people class that us hosting it?2 -

Weren't the United States basically promised this World Cup after they exposed FIFA for the way Blatter gave the last two Tournaments to Russia and Qatar?iaitch said:

Indonesia. They have never even qualified but their passion for football is as great as Mexico’s imo. I’ve been to football in both countries btw.Karim_myBagheri said:
I hope so. Little bit annoyed they get another sort of home world cup but they always look good but can't do it in the latter stages of a tournament. I'm trying to think of a nation of their size and passion who hasn't won a world cup..fenaddick said:
I think they’re stronger than lots of people are giving them credit for plus they have home advantageKarim_myBagheri said:
I have no idea on their own league. So no little about the players who are representing Mexico in this tournament. Are they strong enough? Cos though they have had some pretty tidy teams before they just don't reach the heights like similar nations near them, Argentina and Brazil, have done what with their population and their obsession with the sport.fenaddick said:
This is slightly misleading (not saying that's on purpose!). The Liga MX pays very well for the region and means players don't have to leave. It's why a large proportion of their squad is Liga MX basedKarim_myBagheri said:With it all kicking off there.. Mexico have to be the biggest underachievers for a nation so obsessed with the game.
I'm just quickly thinking but their main guy is Jimenez who plays for fulham.
Why a large country like that just can't produce a team who could contend and why they have so few top class players over the years.
For those of you that are retired, can't work outside when it's raining, pretend you work from home or are unemployed because you're a dopey bar steward or benefits R us, try this.
I'm or have been most of the above !
Only for football geeks:
This is on the BBC website.
91 teams have taken part in the World cup since it's inception:
I got 80 out of 91 and then had to look at all the counties in the world and work out all the name changes in the last 96 years. I then got 90 out of 91 but didn't get Dutch East Indies.
There is no time limit unlike life 🙄😀
I'm English to my core if you discount my Welsh blood from the James's from Maesteg on my Mother's side.
Be careful with your Balkans 🧐

BBC Sport this morning: ‘Has Jude Bellingham done enough to start?’
Jude Bellingham, the best midfielder on the planet? Yeh, I think he may have done.1 -

can't be many countries who could host a world cup by themselves now. No wonder it seems to be joint bids being the only way to get round this. We could go in with the whole of the UK, Ireland and maybe... erm, Holland? Or just with our pals France.Chris_from_Sidcup said:
