Karlan Grant SIGNED - 2 year deal

Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the signing of forward Karlan Grant.
The 28-year-old Addicks academy graduate joins on a two-year deal and makes a return to The Valley after departing in 2019, having gained a wealth of experience in both the Premier League and Championship.
Grant first joined the club’s esteemed academy at the age of 12 after being spotted taking part in Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s holiday courses, and quickly rose through the ranks, making his senior debut in the Championship in 2014 at the age of 17.
He went on to make 98 first-team appearances for the Addicks, netting 21 goals, while taking in loan spells with Cambridge United and Crawley Town, before departing in January 2019 to join then-Premier League outfit Huddersfield Town.
Grant enjoyed a prolific 22-month spell with the Terriers, netting four goals in his first half-season in the top flight, before bagging 19 Championship goals in 2019/20.
His form prompted West Bromwich Albion to take him back to the Premier League in 2020 with the attacker, who is adept at playing centrally as well as out wide, putting pen to paper on a six-year deal at the Hawthorns.
In total, Grant found the net on 35 occasions for the Baggies across 173 appearances in all competitions and spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan with Cardiff City where he racked up another six goals in 40 outings.
The former England U17, U18 and U19 international has made 387 senior appearances throughout his career, 249 of which have come in the Championship, with 34 in the Premier League.
Speaking after rejoining his boyhood club, Grant said: "It’s an unbelievable feeling. I was a boy when I left and I think I’m coming back as a man. I’ve got a lot of experience under my belt and I know what I can bring. When I was here before, I was younger and I was raw - I’ve matured a lot as a player and I can’t wait to get back out there.
"I’ve always looked out for Charlton since I left. I’ve been so fond of the club. To be here now, knowing how much Charlton gave to me - [it feels] truly amazing."
Grant becomes Nathan Jones’ third signing of the summer window and the Addicks boss added: "I’m absolutely delighted to have got the signing of Karlan over the line. He’s someone I’ve known since he was 15 when I was at the football club and is someone who made a big impression on me back in the early days - I’ve monitored him for a long time.
"What we’re trying to do in terms of our evolution is add more quality to the squad and he does that. He’s someone with fantastic pedigree in the Premier League and in the Championship, especially.
"He did fantastically here before and he had a real desire to come back. I wanted to be the one to bring him home. He’s one of our own, he’s done fantastically for the football club and I’m delighted to add a player of Karlan’s quality to our squad."
Meanwhile, Managing Director James Rodwell said: “We’re delighted to bring Karlan back to Charlton. Our focus this summer has been on strengthening the squad with players who can make a real impact, and Karlan fits that profile perfectly.
“With nearly 250 Championship appearances and experience in the Premier League, he brings proven pedigree, quality and know-how as we aim to continue to move the club forward."

2 year deal, hopefully someone who now has a good balance of pace, strength, experience and nous at this level. He's not that prolific, but seems to have spent a decent chunk of his career since leaving us as a second striker or winger rather than the main front man.5

Not a huge fan but he's an experienced championship striker and still a decent age. Not a lot to moan about so he'll have my support whilst he's at the club.

A sensible length contract for Grant. Shame we never did that with a few others but thats modern football for you and not just at Charlton
When you get stuck with players bought on a four year contract and then turn out to be second to useless, then you have a job getting rid of them
Maybe Grant wanted a 2 year deal. Either way it’s very sensible for both parties concerned7 -

2 year deal is interesting. I think it’s a good signing on his attributes, his pressing stats are superb and he’s a very Jones sort of attacker. We’re short pace and directness in attack so filling that gap is huge. There’s things I hesitate on though, his injury record isn’t great and that could be a problem. I also never really warmed to him while he was with us the first time and I haven’t seen anything since that has changed my mind. A big thing in our squad is that there’s a lot of togetherness, I wonder how he’ll get on with the rest of the squad. All in all though it looks like a good deal4

Good signing - but I don’t believe for a second he looks out for our results. Doubt he looked back. Look forward to seeing him play as a wingback next season.

Prem and Championship experience plus his pace are big positives.
Not the most prolific player and questions around attitude are the negatives.

Happy that we have him back. A good proven Championship player. He offers something else to what we have, has goals in him and his pressing stats are great as well.1

You’d think Grant is likely to play a role where it is not all about scoring goals but also adding pace out wide and contributing to an effective press. Tbf when TC played at wing back last season his pace and directness was missed and Charlton couldn’t get up the pitch. A lot of this though depends on Grant staying fit. It’s good that NJ will have options8
