Millenic Alli joins on a four year deal

Interesting point and just had quick glance at their squads in the last 2 PSFs and he wasn't involved in either as far as I saw, so sounds like he might also be with Karlan & Danny in the catch up squadValley11 said:Has he played in Luton’s pre season?

Doesn’t sound massively exciting from Pompey/Luton fans.
Positives: Good pace and will help us stretch the pitch. Let’s TC have an actual rotation option. Supposedly very exciting on his day but equally inconsistent. Some questions about his attitude/application worry me, but I’m sure Chapple and Jones will be well aware of that and must think they can work on it.I do wonder why we’ve now got TC/Grant/Alli, when all 3 seems to favour the left side. I’d guess there must be plans to play one of them through the middle or shift them out right.2 -
I think if you’re comparing how we do our transfer business to how Chelsea do theirs you’re an insane person. At this level getting the contract length right is a big thing; too short on a good player and you lose resale value like with Lyle Taylor and too long on a bad player and their fee and wage become a problem for the club, like we had with Kirk and have with Ahadme. If we go down then we don’t want long Championship wage contracts on our books, which will be why Grant is on a 2 year deal, but giving 4 to Alli must mean his wage isn’t that high and we’re confident that he’s good enough to merit the outlay on a long deal. The amortisation of the fee will not be the basis of that decisionSteveACS said:
Amortisation of the fee.Garrymanilow said:Four years is quite the show of faith. I don’t know much about him but that’s how two wingers for each side so we’re covered there, just have to hope they’re good enough. We do seem to be quite locked into the 4231 now so it’s going to be about those central midfield slots getting sorted to see how we get on
Do you think Chelsea have so much faith in players they sign them for 8 years???3 -
Wide players/wingers at this level are all inconsistent. That’s why they play at this level. Any wide men that can produce quality every game is not going to be found at Championship level. That’s the intriguing thing about them is that they can have a blinder one week and an absolute mare the next game.Lloyd Sam, Kyle Reid, Blackett Taylor all capable of the outrageous and all capable of dross.
So reviews of him will be very similar - capable but inconsistent. Let’s hope for more of the former than the latter.17 -
I’m cool with this signing. “Blows hot and cold” seems to be the description of almost every winger at Champ level and below (even at Prem level tbh) so I take those kinds of comments with a pinch of salt. We badly needed pace out wide/up top and 1v1 ability and now we have 3 in Alli, TC and Grant (and Apter if he can get his arse in gear) so we are definitely improved on that front from last season. Who knows how this will turn out but for now I’ll be backing Alli 100%.
Just need those 2 quality centre mids now please10 -
I am guessing 4 years means a lower annual wage. Still a big gamble.Athletico Charlton said:4 years is a long contract; like Apter, Ahadme, and JRC got.
Let's hope he is better than them.
Had never heard of him before last night so will see how he goes, the comments from Pompey and Luton fans are very mixed.0 -
Pompey fan who is quite good on this sort of thing

26, 4 year contract, based on his previous records, unlikely we make a profit unless he transforms as a player within 2 seasons.
If he has taken a big chunk out of our transfer budget then I think it's a poor signing as we need that money in key positions. If it's not gonna dent the budget and he's seen as a punt, could work out.6 -
You would have thought they'd have learnt their lesson.shirty5 said:Another 4 year deal which I can never understand especially when we have had fingers burnt in the past with these types of contracts and they turn out to be a pile of shit.
However it’s another one through the door and time will tell if he’s a decent signing or not
The plus side I suppose is if they prove a success and can increase their resell value.1 -

Happy with this signing looked a very tricky winger when we played them and definitely adds threat in forward positions. Welcome Alli.2

They were asked to play on the left side because of the trend for inverse widemen.
TC is right footed and has pace and can certainly play on the right and Alli is two footed looking at his video so this really isn't a problem.
Grant can play both sides though did tend to play left and come central when for instance, Taylor was attacking down the right in Karlan's first time at CAFC.1 -
I predict he will be largely similar to Campbell with the difference being that RonnieMoore will love him whilst continuing to slate TC.14

Doesn’t exactly rock my boat…..another let’s wait and see.🤔🤞1

A 'wait and see' signing.
Can he defend?
Is he another Apter?
Are we trying to mould these wingers to become wingbacks?
Are we changing our style of play? - I don't believe it until I see it.3 -
What worries me is that he has not got an injury history, how can he be any good 🤔 😀12

Weegie Addick said:Welcome, Alli. So we now have three who prefer to play on the left and just Apter on the right. We haven’t yet replaced Bree / Clarke. Hoping that side is still being worked on.
We have Ramsey and McNamara to play traditional RB and the days of Bree and Clarke bombing forward as wing backs will be less. In many games Harry Clark would get our 1st chance in matches but he alway missed !
It feels like we will play 4-2-3-1 which will be a radical change and lots of work is needed so we are solid in defence and in transition.

Amortisation has been capped at 5 years due to Chelsea doing this.SteveACS said:

Welcome to the club, let’s see how it pans out.1

I'm guessing we're going to see him on the right with TC/Grant on the left and Godden/Leaburn/Kelman up front. Apter (if he sticks around) to then have tired defenders to run at off the bench1

I’m very worried that this is another signing founded on the fact he did well against us but I received a message saying that he is a player that needs to feel loved. Welcome Millenic, you are loved… so now go and smash it for us and get Ireland into the Euros 🙏2

Not so much marquee signing, more two-man tent with a small opening vent on the right hand side!
It appears (reading between the lines) that Nathan is saying in the press release, that this guy is not really the first 11 standard he is seeking, but that he's been bought as a squad player, and better is needed, and very much hoped for!
Whether come season opener, those new quality signings have arrived, and we haven't let our own better players leave, time will tell.
"Welcome Milli. There aren't too many expectations of you, so make us all pleasantly surprised and whelmed please!"1 -
Delving some more into his stats, I saw he scored 4 in 16 for Luton in the championship. Not too shabby for a wide player, especially when you consider that Luton went down that season. Also had a decent scoring record at Exeter, albeit it in league one.4
-
Quick, strong and likes a trick, he could get fans onside very quickly if the effort is there with a bit of end product. Good thing is if it's not we have Grant and TC (for now, on the latter, wouldn't be surprised if he's sold).0
-
“On his day unreal.. rapid but will miss a lot! Under Nathan he will have to work!”
Luton fans opinion. Sounds like potential if he gets it right2 -
Hard to get excited, but maybe that’s a good thing. This time last year people were losing their minds because we’d signed Knibbs and Kelman, so you just never know.4
-
My initial worry was that he might be another signing on the back of being one of Jones' old boys. I was heartened to learn that their days at Luton did not overlap.mart77 said:I’m very worried that this is another signing founded on the fact he did well against us but I received a message saying that he is a player that needs to feel loved. Oftentimes last year we were competitive in games while TC was on the pitch and then fell behind when he faded or wasn’t about to offer a threat going the other way.fenaddick said:At the very least we won’t be running TC into the ground anymore which is positive
If we’ve got a TC clone here willing to offer a similar direct threat, it’s something we can sustain for a lot longer across a full season.3
