I see a fair amount of rumours and transfer activity this week & still no right winger. Goals for Charlton are going to be hard to come by & I can only put it down to lack of funds. I expect loans to come in over the next few days. Uninspiring transfer window.
I am a moaner, as some may have noticed, but I would call it a good window. If Campbell and Jones re-sign (I have no faith in Ramsay doing so) and we sign a competent right-sided player, then a very good window.
I don’t see Campbell signing is a positive. I don’t know how suddenly Campbell is a championship winger all of a sudden. I would cash in & purchase a right winger. We are going to be fighting for our lives to stay in this division
Well maybe if he's played on the wing this season he might well be a championship winger.

I can't believe there is a world where we let our current number 1 go a few days before the season KOs without having a replacement line up. Even by Charlton's standards that would be batshit
Who said we don't have a replacement lined up? I reckon they'd be a few on a list.

So from what @JoshAddick says we’re treating TC now like Andy Scott treated Dobbo. Very shortsighted imo.

TC has the same agent as Miles Leaburn (who signed a new contract with us) and Joe Aribo (who didn’t) - intel from tonight’s Ask the Experts.
    Aribo was offered a contract?

If as suggested £12k ish a week gets a new contract sorted with TC ( no idea if that’s realistic ) then it’s a complete no brainer with no downside. Even if he doesn’t step up over the next year he will stand the club in just over £500k he is always going to be worth more than that if we sold him next year

    What are you on about?

I’m asking if we approached him this summer

The point you’re replying to was about Aribo being offered a contract and turning it down to go to Rangers

Some good news on the contract renewal front would certainly provide a morale boost going into the new season.

Will TC continue to improve? We don't know.  So offering him a new contract is a gamble.

However, it's a punt that I would like to see the club make; especially due to the cost it would involve to get someone with the same potential as he has which many other clubs at our level would also be after, therefore inflating the cost.

I would also like Lloyd and Kayne to be signed up too, but TC is the one that is key given that we have ambitions of becoming a more attacking force this season.
In terms of age it’s Jones (30), Ramsay (25), TC (22).

In terms of room for growth, it’s TC, Ramsay, Jones.

In terms of importance to the team, right now, it’s probably Jones, TC, Ramsay.

Jones is absolutely essential so, unless our hand is forced by the player or a crazy money bid, imo, he stays this season regardless. However, as a late bloomer having his best years right now - will he still be at his current level in 3 or 4 years time? I think we offer him a new 3 or 4 year deal and hope he’s still doing the business into his mid 30s. But for him, if he wants a bigger Championship pay day (and perhaps a late shot at promotion to the Premier League), he probably needs to move sooner than later. Even waiting to next summer, although he’ll still have interest and be on a Bosman, other clubs may be less willing to give a 31 year old the length of contract and stability we might.

As you say, TC is farthest from the finished article, but with the potential to become an exciting and productive Championship winger, he has the highest potential future sale value if we secure him for another 4 years and sell in 2. Risk is he doesn’t deliver that potential but I suspect, even on an improved deal, it’d still be a relatively low cost gamble, if you can even truly describe it as a gamble. Certainly cheaper than signing an equivalent replacement, without digging up an uncut gem. If @JoshAddick has good intel, then TC wants to stay and we know NJ loves him so I’d be surprised if this one doesn’t get sorted out eventually.

Kane is an interesting one. He’s a Rolls Royce on his day but showed last year he still has stuff to learn. He’s picked up a few longer term injuries while with us now, too. I preferred him at right centre back to wing back, but I doubt he’ll play there in a two. Will be interesting to see how he does if we persist with a back four and he plays orthodox right back. He’s possibly not peaked yet but right backs rarely command huge fees (unless you’re Stoke buying Harry Clarke).

If you were to say we had to sell one now to avoid losing all of them for free, it’d be Kane - but of course his injury will likely put off buyers for this window.

    My prediction:

TC starts the season well and signs a new deal before January.
Jones signs a new deal next summer but we’re all made to sweat on it.
Ramsay leaves in January for a moderate, but slightly underwhelming fee.

I would disagree with the importance to the team now. I’d put Ramsay above TC, we have better alternatives to TC than we do Ramsay (not seen enough of McNamara so maybe I’m wrong), so losing him (although I really hope we don’t) would probably impact us less this season than losing the other 2

I may be alone in this but I’ve been quite underwhelmed with Kayne as an out and out right back rather than at right centre back, providing we can have a replacement in before he goes I’d be fine with cashing in now, I don’t want to see Danny Mc become first choice

Aribo was offered new terms which he stalled on and when he went to the club about the terms duchatelet reduced his terms  is what I heard, in the same way they low balled kermogant

I agree with this. Think he’s looked bang average at right back so far and a bit lost at times.

Could be recency bias having seen him perform so well as part of a 3, but he looks odd to me at right back now

It will probably help when he’s got an actual right winger in front of him. A lot of pre-season it was Fullah who tucked in and then Ramsay had to get forward which isn’t his game. If we can get a proper winger out there that stays high and wide then Ramsay can just focus on doing what he does best

We should still be expecting a decent outlay on at least one player. Carter told us we'd be spending more this summer than last.
With bigger wages and signing on fees I doubt we’re that far short of last summers outlay already. Enough in reserve I suspect for the right player.
    No chance IMO
Thing is, we don’t know for sure, either way. I think we’re paying a lot more in wages this year which soon adds up, wouldn’t be surprised if a couple of players are on over £1m a year. Fees paid are split over the length of the contract and the money is not completely written off as some players will command a fee when sold. Trying to estimate all this is impossible.
I expect Grant will be on a big wage, but who else? Chalobah probably.

Signing players from a relegated Dutch club and Dundee doesn’t scream big wages and fees to me.

McNamara? Maybe, but could easily be on a below average Champ wage.

Alli and Ouma don’t seem likely to be big earners.

Still feels to me like we’re not spending as much as last season. Hopefully the recruitment works out better and some of last summers signings like Knibbs show more than they have so far.
Always need to save some of the budget for January.

All full backs are expected to contribute in attack as well though. Indeed with so many sides playing 433 or 4231, with wingers on the wrong side cutting inside, it's the full back who provides the width on the outside.

meaning another signing is on its way @Redrobo?
Hmmm, Redrobo who has been ITK this season posts and then the FlyingKiwi follows him up with a post, and then provides a post on a player he himself has suggested he has heard about on here...

This stinks of a solid rumour.

    Oh Falk off! Great series.

In a fucked-up logic kind of way - Mbicks injury may actually have come at the right time because it means we still have his contract and the £5m fee agreed with Brighton will probably look like chicken feed in 6 months.  I reckon Brighton were being aggressive because they could see his value will only go one way now.
    stand-by for action
We have to play him. His value won't increase if he's on loan in L1 or playing U21 football.

AND if we're not going to play academy players in the Championship,  then why should they stay with us? Or sign their first contract at 16 full stop? If they join a PL side,  then they can be well paid while being sent out on loan.

That’s not really always the case though. In fact even wingers on the wrong side are often expected to remain high and wide and full backs are not told to get near them as they want the winger in a 1v1 situation not a 2v2 with less space. Even if TC is on the left you don’t always want someone overlapping him because that kills his option to take someone on the outside as well as inside

If we get a winger that stays high and wide (which is most wingers), Ramsay can stay back or invert to a more central position to support midfield. That’s what he’s best at

How often have we seen Kayne at right back? Right wing back, yes, but I can’t think of many times at right back because NJ has almost exclusively played a back 5 up until now.

I agree he hasn’t shone at wing back where he needs to be the attacking width, but in a back 4 where his main role is defending and he just needs to provide attacking support to a natural winger, he should be better suited. At the very least, I think it’s a bit early to judge him there.

It is not a gamble, or no more than signing any player is. I am confident that Campbell will improve, especially if he is now, at last, played in his best position, on the left of a front three. But the point is that he is already Championship standard, and nearly every Championship club, excluding maybe only the top 6 promotion favourites, would be glad to have him in their squads.

  • Swap Campbell for Small, plus cash our way and a good sell on ?
