Played well on the weekend. Can’t see them selling him. Especially to a team they may see as a relegation rival.SheedyCAFC said:Allegedly we’re one of 4 clubs interested in Bolton’s John McAtee0 -
7 starts and 16 sub apps for Bolton in the league last season.Braziliance said:
It's an interesting link, we don't really have a pure 10/second striker imo. Closest from what I have seen is Karlan Grant based on the Derby game. Knibbs isn't technical enough, Carey doesn't seem to have the know how to play there, JRC is too lightweight.fenaddick said:Anthony Joseph of Sky now tweeting out the McAtee link. Wouldn't be too inspired by that signing if it happened
McAtee has a goal in him and is better on the ball than most of our midfielders. He would be a good option in certain games.
I saw a Bolton fan saying he is worth about 500k.

Season before a lot better - 31 starts, 14 sub apps and 11 goals in the league.
Doesn’t look like he’d be an upgrade on what we have.
I agree with the suggestion we may have been added to the list of interested clubs for whatever reason.3 -
This is ambiguous. Do you mean he passes in addition to shooting, or that he passes as well as he shoots?soapboxsam said:
He does pass as well as shoot
Carey's biggest drawback is that he is a bloody awful passer, which is a real liability for a midfielder. He often does not pass when he should, runs on with his head down until he is crowded off the ball. If he does pass he is sloppy, often causing his teammate to slow down in order to control a bobbling ball or one half a yard behind him.
His other big drawback is that he does little to defend in midfield.5 -
Yeah I wanted him 3 or 4 years ago in League 1, as well as Luca Connell. Not so sure now, especially with the squad being bloated.Scoham said:

I can't imagine us being in for a 10 when we're already over the squad limit and trying to bring another player in as it is. Feels like Bolton trying to put pressure on an interested team to hurry them up and give them time to get their own signing in3
-
There’s no way we can compete with Burnley on salary. Both his starting salary, and the chance of it being automatically increased through promotion, are higher at Burnley than with us.
I’d love him to come back to us, but he’d be mental to if there’s an offer from Burnley on the table.4 -

It's only if the wages are close. If it is let's say Burnleys 25-30k offer compared to our 10-15k, then we probably don't have a chance. (Both wages pure guesses)SouthLincsAddick said:
I’m not for one second calling you delusional but if Burnley are involved then there’s little chance of JRS coming here. What they can offer Palace and in a fee and wages to the player will override any preference he has. Shame as he could really shine in our squad. Instead he’ll spend most of the season on the bench. He only comes here if no other team comes in for him, could happen, but it’s slim.Braziliance said:Call me delusional, but I reckon if it's us or Burnley and the wage disparity isn't too wide, he will pick us.
Been fairly unsuccessful elsewhere, knows if he comes here he will be an almost guaranteed starter, stays near family, Tyreece is his best mate, friends with Kayne as well and I genuinely think he loved being here.
I reckon if we offer Palace a reasonable fee and we offer Jes decent Champ wages, he would sign.
I am just holding on to the hope that his preference would probably be London and familiar surroundings. Tyreece rejected triple his salary, so it's not completely bizarre to think Jes would take less (no pun) to be at a more favourable location.
Let's hope it happens as I think having him and TC either side as wingers wouldn't look out of place in a top 10 Championship side.1 -
Wouldn’t be overly impressed with Okonkwo, games i did see Wrexham or highlights last season I remember a mistake in him.
But also understand where we are at with the level of keeper we can attract for the money. I definitely would say it doesn’t strengthen us at all.4 -

JRS wasn’t rated at a Stoke side that finished 17th and was abysmal at the valley last year when he missed 2 sitters.Maybe players are just destined to be successful at 1 club and whilst it’s important to consider what he has done in a Charlton shirt I think it’s important to consider what he’s done at Stoke and Sheffield United as well. From what we have seen he’s guaranteed upgrade in the RW position but there’s no guarantee he will hit the same form and numbers he did previously.4

Anyone who doesn’t think Okonkwo improves us needs to give their head a wobble. He is a top young keeper with room to grow and will only get better. Yes he may have a howler in him every now and then but what keeper doesn't. He is an outstanding shotstopper and is a very good height too. He’s a far better option than Kaminski or Mannion.

Okonkwo story seems to stem from that uber reliable fount of made up drivel and all around brittle ninny Alan Nixonbromdog said:Wouldn’t be overly impressed with Okonkwo, games i did see Wrexham or highlights last season I remember a mistake in him.

Keep calm and carry on...1 -
He has the same limitations as Mannion, according to the article. Poor with his feet and can make rash choices at times of when to come claim a ball, or to stay on his line. It's not a sufficient upgrade for the money. We need better. Seeing as its late in the window, I wonder if NJ would consider getting a loan for a season?DubaiCAFC said:
Yes, I am not sold on him as a keeper. And not sure he is any better than we have to be honest. I think there is better out there, and don't think he is going to be cheap.Scoham said:Rich has put up an article on Okonkwo but already replied in the comments to someone that it’s not because a deal is close. Includes thoughts from a Wrexham fan on his strengths, weaknesses, why he’s likely to leave etc.
He is 3rd choice of a championship club.3 -
Even a £10k weekly difference between what we can offer and what Burnley can offer in your guesstimate is £1.5M over a three year contract. And that assumes that he isn’t promoted with Burnley during that time which would typically trigger a significant increase.Braziliance said:

Personally everytime I see Okonkwo he looked really good, would be a good addition and make us stronger.10

Are people forgetting that he was a consistent starter scoring 7 goals from the wing for a team that came third?Crispywood said:JRS wasn’t rated at a Stoke side that finished 17th and was abysmal at the valley last year when he missed 2 sitters.Maybe players are just destined to be successful at 1 club and whilst it’s important to consider what he has done in a Charlton shirt I think it’s important to consider what he’s done at Stoke and Sheffield United as well. From what we have seen he’s guaranteed upgrade in the RW position but there’s no guarantee he will hit the same form and numbers he did previously.
Not to mention scoring 4 in 13 in the Turkish Super League.
It's not like he has flopped elsewhere. Far from it13 -
Everyone remembers the miss from last season but what about the mazy run where our defenders looked hapless before it? Everyone misses chances but JRS has that X factor flair we lack on that side.32

Perhaps a short fall in wages in this example for instance, £1.5m could be paid as a promotion bonus for JRS should we get promoted within three seasons?se9addick said:

Not trying to piss on the fireworks but it’s not going to be “a couple of grand” it’s likely Burnley can offer probably double what we can. It might well be a mistake for him to go there but in the end it’ll come down to money.AberystwythAddick said:

Doesn't always come down to money. I've turned down opportunities to speak with employers who would pay me near double my current wage, because there are other considerations. All the money in the world wouldn't make me want to move to Burnley. Maybe JRS likes living in London, and after a couple of years away would prefer to rebuild in his home town with friends around him.
My guess, TC has already signed and we are waiting for a double announcement.5 -

I think what we’ve established from the large number of different opinions regarding players potentially signing for us is that no player is perfect. The simple fact is that if a player were perfect or even remotely close to being perfect, then they quite simply wouldn’t be signing for us or anybody else in the championship for that matter. What is true regarding Okonkwo and JRS is that they are both quite clearly talented, would be an upgrade on what we have currently and are also both still young with room to improve.JRS at this point seems like it’s destined to happen if we can agree something with Palace. At this moment in time his career is on a downward trajectory and this is Palace’s last chance of cashing in on him. It seems as if the player would be open to the move and coming back to the club where he had his most successful season with fans that love him and around players that he also considers close friends. It’s a no-brainer and I do hope we go all out for him.7
-
Not meant to be a criticism in any way shape or form but it’s a bit depressing when we’re desperate to sign a player who would be “our star” who can’t get anywhere near the Crystal Palace squad let alone team.5

His brother has been released by Chelsea too, bring him in and make it a real love in.Richard Olise also has while we're at it and hopefully Michael will feel the family pull to join us at the Valley.3

Is it worth noting that Sheffield Utd are not linked to him ? I’d say Chris Wilder is a pretty shrewd manager and why doesn’t he fancy him ?North Lower Neil said:

With the greatest respect you’re likely in a career people can do for 30/40 years footballers get 15/20 at best and they don’t make that much as youngsters.Athletico Charlton said:ShootersHillGuru said:

My guess, TC has already signed and we are waiting for a double announcement.Doubling your salary would be 30-100k a year assuming your role is similar to mostDoubling JRS salary is probably an extra 750k a year.TC is an exception because he’s so introverted and reserved that a move elsewhere would probably scare him half to death. But how many footballers can we name who have stayed at Charlton opposed to moving away when they have better offers on the table. If Rak-sayki had the same offers on the table he would 100% join us over any club but I very doubt it would be that simple0 -
I think the whole thing lives and dies by him particularly wanting to come back here and us being particularly keen (much more so than any other fanbase) in bringing him backShootersHillGuru said:

That’s just where we’re at at the minute and how it is to be fair. It’s a huge jump up in quality from the championship to the premier league and you see often how players aren’t able to step up. In fairness at one point weren’t Palace valuing JRS at around £15m-£20m? Rightly or wrongly of course.ShootersHillGuru said:Not meant to be a criticism in any way shape or form but it’s a bit depressing when we’re desperate to sign a player who would be “our star” who can’t get anywhere near the Crystal Palace squad let alone team. This is also the same club that spunked £40m on Brennan Johnson.0 -

I think a lot of people are going over board on AO. He’s a good young keeper but IMO right now in 2026 he is unlikely to be a significant upgrade on what we currently have.CB1 said:Anyone who doesn’t think Okonkwo improves us needs to give their head a wobble. He has youth on his side which is the major positive. Just hoping, if he does come in, the supporters will give him time to mature and become the top keeper he can be (but isn’t yet) at this level.2
