MATCH PREVIEW: West Ham United vs. Charlton Athletic - Saturday 22nd August - 3pm Kick-off

Im hoping Jones shows WHU what they missed out on when he re-signed with us - hopefully he keeps Piroe quiet and we scrape just a 0-1 victory.2
-
Despite Campbell being (obviously) much better on the left I think he will still start with him on the right and switch after 25-30 minutes. I think this is part of the plan to unsettle the fullbacks.2
-
Really looking forward to it. Honestly, have no idea how this will play out.
Strong possibility that West Ham are too strong for us and we go there and take a big loss. However, we’ve shown last season with wins at Middlesbrough, Ipswich and the draw at Southampton that we can compete against the top sides in this division. You’ve also got the pressure of West Ham playing at home, whilst being huge favourites and having to break down a stubborn opposition. Would a 60k home crowd be patient if still 0-0 after 60 mins. Will be positive and say 1-1.0 -
I don't fancy we get anything really considering the strength of their first 11. However, if we can frustrate them, their options off the bench aren't great.2

Let's be clear it's the Spurs cup tie that's the free hit not a Championship away match at the Olympic stadium where Charlton battle away for a positive result. A win or a draw against the favourites to go back up in West Ham will consolidate our win last week.
I predicted 2-1 against Derby on the Prediction thread but not so confident this week but whatever the score tomorrow I feel the squad is coming together and we will definitely play 4-2-3-1 for the majority of this season as our 4 or soon to be 5 wide players (wingers) aren't Wing backs !

I expect WesthM 2 Charlton 0, that is being optimistic and believing we give a decent performance. Their new loan signing forward for example looks to be an excellent Championship quality signing. Keeping their most consistent players from the Prem is hard to beat.1
-
Surprising fact (or maybe not actually because we're absolutely fucking massive) our best league finish is higher than West Ham's. They've never finished above 3rd in the First Division.1

I fear we'll get taken apart if we go with a back 4. I'm fully expecting Jones to be cautious and play a back 5, which to me would probably be the sensible decision.fenaddick said:It could be chaos but I really want NJ to stick to his guns and play the 4231 rather than going to the 352. TC has the pace to cause them problems on the counter if he has support0 -

What would your 5 be out of interest? NJ would play Bell I think but harsh to drop Koumetio and I'm not sure you want him at RCB. And not Bell at LWB surelyChris_from_Sidcup said:

7-0 Charlton if JRS signs3

Think the first goal will be crucial, as it often is .
Certainly think the Hammers crowd will get on their backs if it goes our way.
Certainly the next two games are a test of the whole squad, and management team.
Find it ridiculous that the game is not on Sky plus, it's a sell out and was always going to be.
Personally, I would love a win against this team above any other, when I was brought up in Charlton most of the lads were either West Ham or Arsenal. I will not be happy if we do not give a good account. You can but hope!

West Ham only beaten Charlton 8 times in 32 league matches.4

Do you want us to predict your 10 goal scorers tomorrow?JeffGayle said:Hi, sorry to intrude, I'm a West Ham fan who writes a Q&A column for www.westhamtilidie.com. I'm looking for someone to answer 10 or so questions ahead of tomorrow's game. Please let me know if you are interested.10 -
I think you are safe today FA, if JRS signs he is unlikely to start because of fitness so will not alter your prediction 🤣1

I don’t see NJ changing tomorrows formation as much as I didn’t expect him to change last seasons formation, just because it’s a 4 doesn’t mean we can’t defend with the two in front of them. Teams have won championships with 4 at the back you know!!Chris_from_Sidcup said:

Is one of their goals going to be after a comedy air-kick attempted clearance too? Koumetio playing the role of the Elk?golfaddick said:I was thinking back to our last League fixture at their place, 20 years ago. Almost identical - their first home match of the season & only a couple of days difference (in 2006 it was 19th Aug - this year it will be the 22nd).
Sadly I think the result will be the same.
3-1 to the bastards in Claret & Blue.0 -
They think they’re going to steamroller this league.
Keep it 0-0 and they’ll be some boos at half time. Get it to 60 minutes and they’ll be more boos and general discontent. Then we can make a double substitution, change a defensive approach to an attacking one and score not one but two or three goals. TC plays a blinder.1 -

- This will be the first league meeting between West Ham United and Charlton Athletic since February 2007 in the Premier League, with the Addicks recording a 4-0 home win.
- Charlton Athletic have won four of their last six league games against West Ham (D1 L1), though their only defeat came in their last away match against the Hammers – a 3-1 defeat in August 2006.
- West Ham United are winless in each of their last nine London derbies at home in the league (D1 L8), losing all six last season – they are both their worst ever such runs in the Football League.
- Last season, Charlton remained unbeaten across their three away games against sides who had been relegated from the Premier League the season prior (W2 D1), conceding just one goal in the process.
- West Ham have lost their home opener in six of the last eight seasons (W2), conceding 2.5 goals per match across that time. Their last in the Championship saw them lose 1-0 to Cardiff in 2011.

Are you still living in that cardboard box just off the strand?4 -
Going 5-4-1 and basically saying 'attack us for 90 minutes, we won't lay a glove', yeah that's definitely the way to go3

Good news for those able to go to the game or watch on TV, i am at the NL grand prix and will not be able to watch any or hardly any of the game. Therefore I anticipate Charlton will play well and we will nick a point, or more likely Verstappen will get pole after Hamilton and Norris crash out on their qualifying laps to start at the back of the grid. It will be pissing down with rain all day in Zandvoort and my seat has no cover. I'm already missing the cure in edinburgh tomorrow so may as well also miss charlton win 1-40

Hope you smash them. Arrogant pricks.24
