Cracknell had a poor game keeping wicket. I’ve just seen the replay of Parkinson’s dismissal of Cornwell. What a ball!!!! It pitched a foot and a half outside off-stump and took his middle & leg stumps.Addick Addict said:

It was a great ball but, actually, we possibly benefitted from Cornwell, a left-hander replacing the right-handed Bosch because the ball span out of the bowler's footmarks. The same ball might have bowled Bosch round his legs, assuming that the batter didn't opt to block it with his legs, but I'm not sure that Parkinson would have started the line of the ball that wide anyway.Peter_G said:

Northants duly won but the gap between us and them is now 4 points. We could do with Worcestershire failing to chase down 269 against Gloucestershire as there will be some distance then between us and the fourth placed side.4

Always gonna be tough when 3 test hosting counties in the division1

Ignoring my previous self-expressed bias, I'm convinced that, in a few years time, Ekansh will solve England's all rounder issue. He's still so raw as a bowler, to the extent that he hasn't quite perfected a stock ball, but that ability to find that extra bit of bounce and nip is what helped him to take out the top three of Middlesex yesterday. It is incredible that he only seriously took up bowling two years ago and his strong bull of a stamp now is so different to the waif-like teenager he was at that time. I know how hard he has worked to develop that physique, very often on his own in the gym at Beckenham too.
Despite him being our joint third highest wicket taker in the CC, bowling really is his second discipline. Eventually batting at four or five will allow him to build an innings without looking over his shoulder as to what's to come in the behind him. That will also, hopefully, put a stop to him having quite so many self-inflicted dismissals. His statistics as a batter really do belie his talent.
The sooner we persuade Ekansh to sign an extended contract the better because, as we know in the cases of Cox and Robinson, two years left sounds a long time but it really isn't. Once the voices from other counties start whispering in the lad's ears then we could see a delay in him agreeing to a new contract. I would be surprised if he doesn't get a Lions call up this winter and that is the sort of forum, in speaking to players from those other counties, where those sort of conversations begin. I hope that we've already started conversations with him.9 -

Some bad news - we are likely to be deducted two points for a slow over rate so the gap between us and Northants will be two points and not four. I do appreciate that seamers bowl the vast majority of our overs but that's seven points we have had deducted this season for the same reason and it would be embarrassing if that ends up preventing our promotion.1

Whisper it but there's a certain very rich neighbour of ours with just the one win in Div 1 of the CC and three points above the relegation zone. How devastating would it be for us to swap with them come the end of the season!!!10

I see on NV Cricket that Ollie Butterfill is playing for Sussex 2s today against Warwickshire. Sadly, that is almost certainly an indication that we aren't going to be offering him a contract at the end of the season especially as Kent 2s are also playing today. He is a talented batter and spinner but we already have a similar type in Jaydn (batter who bowls left arm spin) and perhaps he isn't considered to be outstanding enough in either discipline, on a stand alone basis and at this stage of his development, to offer him terms.
All of that is not to say that he might not make it but, unfortunately, there are only so many players, especially youngsters, that a county that isn't Test or Hundred hosting can afford. Wish Ollie all the best if he is leaving and hope that he goes on to having a really good career. With or without us.4 -
The contracted players in the Kent 2s team are Evison, Jas, Dawkins, Cohen and Curtiss. At lunch Gloucs are 82-2 with the wickets to Jas and the trialist Ethan Rice who is a left arm seamer formerly with Northants.1

From the Sussex side this makes complete sense. Pace we're fine with producing but we've got no spin depth behind Carson and we've not got a lot coming through with the bat.0 -
To be fair, although Min will have some input no doubt, any decision won't be solely down to him. The likes of the 2nd XI coach, Mark Dekker in addition to Adam Holliake and Simon Cook will all have their say. This could be a wafer thin decision but, ultimately, with finances and the balance of the squad specifically in mind.Pedro45 said:

Ekansh has been the most successful of them but youngsters do develop at different rates. The other thing to consider is that all players have a bad run and in the case of those making their way in the game that is the biggest hurdle of all to get over. One of the favourite stories of the former head of the Kent academy related to Bell-Drummond. Throughout his development, Kent openly admitted in making the mistake of not playing him beyond his capabilities. That resulted in him dominating all levels of cricket until he got into the first team and when faced with a poor run (barely averaged 15 between the ages of 18 and 20) he did not know how to handle that. The following season he scored almost a thousand runs in the CC and topped the averages but it did take him time to work things out.IR94 said:

Dawkins is going through that right now and no doubt Ekansh will do too at some point. I suppose the fundamental difference is that, because Ekansh now has two "strings to his bow", he can still find himself a place in the side if he is really successful at one of those disciplines. Dawkins does only have batting and that makes things a fair bit harder for him. Jaydn has had his share of injury and illness but also has that challenge of proving his value with bat and ball.
I've said it before but it was a massive call, at the time, to drop Evison for Ekansh. Few would dispute that decision now but there were certainly some questioning it at the time (not necessarily on here). I hope Evison finds his form in his new surroundings but, equally, I do believe that Ekansh's ceiling, with bat and ball, is a much higher one. Ekansh won't get ahead of himself, because he's not that type of guy, but so mustn't we even some of us do firmly believe that he will play for England one day. He isn't as far advanced as say Harry Brook, for example, was at the same age but then Brook enjoyed the advantage of having Martin Speight at Sedbergh school coaching him each and every morning from 6.30am, for years at that, using the best facilities available.2 -
Gloucs made 351 in their first innings. Pick of the bowlers was Rice who returned figures of 18.5-6-32-5. This is his third game for us and I'm surprised that he's been released by Northants without having played a professional game. That shows how fast things move. On Monday Evison was bowling for Kent 2s in their 4-day game and disappeared from the match yesterday to train with Sussex. It also demonstrates that there was never any consideration that he was going to get back in to the Kent team this season. Now he's going to be playing for Sussex in Div 1. Have to say that I've been impressed with Rice. He's probably not rapid but clearly has a stock ball and knows what he's doing with it too - figures in the match of 23-8-41-6, in what is a high scoring game, suggests just that. Since being released by Northants three years ago, as an 18 year-old, it appears that he has had very little 2nd XI exposure but has been playing minor counties cricket in the interim for Cambridgeshire.
Not being ultra quick never stopped Darren Stevens because he could move it both ways and had the "ball on a string". Not saying Rice is that but he does enjoy that other rare commodity that we haven't had in red ball - being a left armer. It will be interesting to see how he goes for the rest of the season, hopefully in our 2s for the duration.0
