I will be pleased and relieved if JRS signs, as I think he will strengthen our first XI, and we are unlikely to sign anyone else as good at this late stage of the window.  However, in an ideal world, I would rather we had signed, for a similar amount of money, Jordan Holsgrove, or someone of that ilk, as we will still be left with a paper-thin midfield that will look vulnerable if Chalobah is injured. And that was obviously NJ's strategy for the window, too.

On another matter, why has no report been posted of our u18's 3-1 win over Huddersfield on Saturday?
Given our recent history of dreadful injury records and paper thin squads I think depth is always a big part of the puzzle, however in the position you reference we currently have Coventry, Chalobah, Ouma, Mwamba, Docherty and (if need be) JRC and even Carey who NJ I think ideally wants to play deeper. I’m not sure there’s space for much more realistically, even if one goes out
Chalobah is notoriously injury prone. if he were not, he would not be with us because he is real class.

Ouma is a punt.  He be wonderful or may be crap. We will not know until which months after the window closes.

Mwamba we have great hopes for, but has looked lost in his two cameos so far, so may take some months to be worth a place in the team.

Docherty, JRC and Carey are all crap and should be nowhere a Championship side. JRC is onw of the worst players I have ever seen in a Charlton shirt. He finds it hard to break into a slow trot. Maybe our best passer, but that is not enough.

Coventry has played really well this season. So much better without Docherty confusing him. But that is only three games. After three seasons of League One standard play, where he looked solid but unenterprising, I have yet to be convinced he will maintain his new level.

We need a rugged box-to-box MF in there who can defend when called on. Someone like George Dobson. I know we cannot sign him, because a section of posters throw temper tantrums at the thought of re-signing former players, but someone of that type. Sam Morsy would have been ideal. He left on a free.
One of the worst players you’ve ever seen in a Charlton shirt is also the best passer in our current squad?

Doesn’t say much for what you think of our team this season then.

It's like 'Moneyball', where they don't want to sign someone, because they have an ugly girlfriend...

To be fair to Knibbs he's not got a terrible goal return for the limited minutes he's played. Two last minute goals in there as well.

Knibbs averaged 0.41 goals per 90 last season, and Carey averaged 0.21.

Obviously Carey has done way more in a Charlton shirt, and had a better season, but worth noting Knibbs' stats.

I'm not for a moment saying Carey is lazy btw, but Knibbs is actively known for his workrate in his career so far.

You can't just base it on what he's done for us when half fit and then injured
Well yes exactly. But you’re advocating for him over Carey without seeing if he can do it at a higher level

Knibbs has not shown he can do what he did in league 1, in the intensity of the championship. He’s not even completed 90 minutes yet so to say he has a better work rate than Carey (who tops our distance covered stats last season) is ridiculous

Knibbs at Reading showed he was a very good presser, and wins the ball back high up the pitch well. There’s been signs of this playing for us too. But being able to consistently run 12km at good intensity and then do it again the next game is completely different and there is so far zero evidence he can do that at championship level.

Carey is one of our hardest working players without the ball. If Knibbs can do the same then that’s great, but so far there is no evidence to say he can

    No I didn't.

I said I'd have Knibbs over Carey as a workrate monster, in reply to you talking about Carey being the best option in that position for pressing and work rate.

Knibbs' main strength is workrate over technical ability.

Earnshaw: “Knibbs is the key presser for Reading, him and Charlie Savage were absolute monsters when it came to pressing last season, because Ruben Selles was such a keen presser. Selles made Reading one of the best pressing teams in League One in the last couple of years - and Knibbs was the main man behind it.

That is a direct quote from when we signed him last summer from Reading's version of Rich Cawley.

Totally agree about JRC , the worse player I have seen play for Charlton , no pace , no engine , can’t tackle or head a ball and stands in the middle of the pitch pointing at people . He occasionally hits a good ball but watch how many bad passes he does . Although in all honesty hardly touches the ball.  Would have preferred to have kept Anderson - at least he gives 100%

Doesn't really matter the level when it comes pressing and stamina though does it? It's not like we're comparing non league to the Premier league, the pressing required in League 1 and the championship will be largely the same.

Sorry mate, that’s just not true. A headless chicken can press semi effectively in league one. They won’t be as effective in the championship where the ball will be moved round them so much more easily.

There’s a lot of skill and nouse to pressing effectively, not just stamina

Err no. The championship will be much more difficult. The defenders are much better on the ball for starters, so it's harder to win it back. Pressing well is a skill it's not just being able to run and keep running

As I said before Carey was in the top 16% of midfielders for winning the ball in the final third last season, along with being our best player for distance covered. I think Knibbs can do the first one possibly, as he was very good in league 1 at winning the ball back high up the pitch pressing. But whether he can consistently play 90 minutes in the championship at a high intensity so far we have no evidence to back up, whereas with Carey he did it last season and if anything played too much because Knibbs wasn't there

Exactly this, sure you can run around just as much in both leagues but in the Championship you need to be much more savvy about how and when to do it effectively otherwise you can run your legs off and achieve very little.
Docherty (for all his flaws) is a great example of someone who DOES press very well in this division because he has got the experience to do it.

Wtf. There are probably hundreds worse.
Who ever has said that is totally clueless! I don’t think Knibbs. JRC or Carey will go. And will not need to. Burke won’t go.

We are 2 games in, and this squad will get used and rotated more this year. Remember we had a lot of injuries at the same time last year. And history tells you, that is likely to happen again.

Kanu, Doc, NA and TK are the ones to go.

If JRC is the worst player to ever play for Charlton in someone's opinion, then said person clearly wasn't around for Parkinson's 2010/11 team, the Roland years from relegation to just before Bowyer, and the Sandgaard era.

I wonder if current injuries will come into play with the squad up until January, obviously not if they are all on schedule to be back and the club are confident they won’t suffer setbacks, Apter, JRC and knibbs to me are the most vulnerable to being loaned out to make space for incomings along with the aforementioned players, not saying they should all go but reckon they are the ones being considered for moves.
