Comment on the player ratings re Coventry "Got involved, but I wish he would reduce his backward passing."
I get this comment last season but I think his forward passing has hugely improved so far this season. That cross field ball to Alli, the defense splitting pass to TC and just generally looking forward first more. He will inevitably have to pass backwards sometimes.24 -

I'm still not fully sold. Against a better team he'd have more defensive work to do. Well we have again given ever so slightly better than we got, and in football, that is all that matters. A win, is a win, is a win. As dad always says, "You can only beat the team in front of you!"
Preston looked ragged and tried to bring us down to their level, which was pretty scrappy. They huffed a few times, but weren't going to blow the SE7 house down. This Charlton side are playing with the same dogged effort as last season (Nathan won't accept anything less) but with a different approach. One that has quality and an element of excitement about it. It's so much easier in the eye, than much of last season's point grabbing, yet often unpalatable style.
Nathan has said, we are a club that is building, and playing against bigger clubs, that have a head start on us. Well they need to understand that plucking old Charlton are just that. We aren't going to let a cup defeat let out heads go down. Each game is the next chance to prove that we are worthy of our place at the second tier table. So far, it is feeling so good.
Thanks again NJ and the boys for your efforts.
Incidentally my wife took me out this evening for a birthday meal, and everything tasted just that little bit better than it probably was.

We’re abroad on holiday at present, but I managed to watch this one on a Charlton TV stream. A tepid first half in which I thought that Preston moved the ball reasonably well and pressed effectively in the early stages, although they increasingly ran out of puff as the game wore on. Neither team created anything meaningful in that first period (less still a strike on target) and the hope was that we’d raise our game kicking towards the Covered End.
Happily that came to pass, as Charlton’s home grown players really picked it up in the second half, assisted by substituting Alli for Carey and moving Karlan inside in the number 10 role. We created a lot more, with TC repeatedly skinning Harry Clarke and Miles Leaburn giving Preston’s central defenders a tough time. A really nice sweeping pass from Coventry - who had a fine match - was neatly taken down by Alli, who played a tasty low ball into Grant’s feet, who twisted and turned the defender and squeezed his shot into the bottom corner. Like his beautiful cross for Lloyd’s equaliser in the last home game, those moments of class and composure are precisely why we brought him back to the club.
A good all round team performance and I thought that we saw out the win very professionally. Mesik made a sound debut and the defence dealt competently with the very little threat that Preston were able to muster. Callum Lang (Pompey’s ex-right winger) buzzed around a bit but if the other guy, Burgzorg, was supposed to be a centre-forward, I can’t say I noticed.
For us, Coventry held things together very well in midfield and, whilst there was naturally concern with Chalobah’s injury, Mwamba proved a more than able deputy and really looks some player. The forwards all played well, with Leaburn probably man of the match.
9 points is a quite fantastic start. Whilst the injury count now matches the points total, let’s hope that we can get a couple of players in to strengthen the squad by close of play on Tuesday, with a few of the lads due to return after the international break.

Low away attendance didn’t help. I’m normally in a regular 5 and 2 were away today so this across the fan base explains why! Great atmosphere all game and so pleased for NJ, I think he deserved that today

Was out all day Saturday, didn't have my phone with me and didn't have a clue what happened until heard Cundy and O'Hara announce we was top of the league on the car radio.
Just seen the highlights and am glad Grant was rewarded for his recent efforts.
