I did my first parkrun in almost two months yesterday. A combination of little injuries and not fancying running in the heatwaves.
I had to see a man about a dog and found myself in Ipswich, so I chose to do Christchurch Park parkrun, pretty much in the centre of town.
2 and a half laps around a nice park with hills and a small pond.
I managed a sprint finish, narrowly beating a bloke carrying a large rucksack on his back, as I crossed the line with a smile on my face. Pretty pleased with my time, but my knees are feeling it today.
    Yeah it’s a hilly bastard that one…
I don't think I will be hurrying back to that one anytime soon.

Running the Big Half in 2.5 weeks, hoping it cools down by then or I could be in trouble. It'll be my first half marathon, slightly nervous about it...
Me too. Hope your training is going better than mine and pray it’s not as hot and sunny on day as last year
  • My local parkrun at Weymouth has been cancelled next two weeks on account of (some) runners failing to show due consideration to other park users, which I dare say means that Dorchester Great Field, which I regularly attend now, will be totally overrun next two weeks.

On a separate note, just booked Tokyo marathon next year (which will be my fifth of the original six majors).

my big half training took a real backseat due to injury, currently doing 5k in 32mins 2/3 times a week with a long run on a saturday my longest being 15.5k am attempting a 18k this Saturday and i think if i can get through that it will put me in good stead for the half.

Ooh tell me more. I did the ballot last year (obviously didn’t get in) and this year have done the lottery thing where you pay 14 odd quid, and have to run 5k or summink in August. Results early September. Have you done it with a tour operator?

Another big half runner here. No idea how my training is going as the heat makes it difficult
    to to judge running performance.

re your running @AFKABartram I have been doing plenty of reading on running when getting older in the last year or two. H the r biggest impact is that I would
recommend making sure you do some strength training alongside the running. I think you are a similar vintage to me so suspect it may have a similar positive impact on you - essentially as we age our bodies naturally lose muscle and by not working to reduce that decline our running will suffer regardless.

Cheers @kigelia great to see us 38 year olds looking out for each other 👍

Have tried balloting for a number of years, and have also tried (and failed) bidding for a charity place (tho' know some people that this has worked for), so just bit the bullet and booked a package with Sports Tours International (never been with them before). Very expensive, but my financial advisor tells me I need to spend.

New PB by 46 seconds this morning at the Parkrun over Charlton Park.

Now under 28 minutes in the V50-54 section and was a minute quicker than my last run over at Marlow 3 weeks ago.

My 12th Parkrun since July 2025 and nearly 3 minutes quicker
Another PB this morning at Charlton. 7 seconds faster than 2 weeks ago

My 2nd slowest ever, though was middle part of a 12k run.

How the weather changes so quickly  Rain started from the minute I left my house and didn’t stop once. Made a nice change, but not sure sunglasses was the right call!

Did one of my sporadic trips to Parkrun as part of a longer run. Managed a pb and probably
my fastest 5k in well over 20 years with a 21.46

Watched a bit of it. A few running club mates are properly into their ultras and I find the mental side of it fascinating (just finished an audiobook biography of Lazarus Lake/gary Cantrell that I recommend) but not sure running one is for me.

I’ve just finished the dean kazares book and am on the Scott jurel one. UTMB has fascinated me. Even the the music at the start as the runners were waiting was epic.
A backyard ultra is on my list for 2027. A mate of mine is doing one in new addington as we
    speak.

The book is recommended even more. The second half covers the 2023 big’s backyard ultra. It is fantastic.

i have been tempted to try one too, or one of the 24hr races more from a curiosity point of view. However I think I have set my heart on trying a return to the track next summer and some masters athletics.

At work we have a running group on our internal socials and people do a monthly Teams session to talk through a particular running subject. A couple have been on Ultras with one guy doing the Cocodona 250 and another the Western States 100. How people are able to do these events is beyond my comprehension, even with things like planning the fuelling and rest stops. It's amazing what the human body is capable of.

Good luck to you both.  Keep it slightly too slow at the beginning and finish strong!

This is something I'm not good at! My most recent long run I went out too quick and spent the last 5/6km just suffering.
  • Must say, the Big Half medal looks epic though!

thats perfectly normal.  It's probably what I would do despite knowing the oposite is better.

I’m massively anxious about this one. I just can’t run when the suns out as i literally sweat buckets, and it’s due to be 26 degrees and sunny again on Sunday. Was like this last year and I had a disaster run.

Dreading Sunday and wished I’d never registered

You're not alone mate, dreading it also.

You said it yourself, you done it last year.... you just need to go out and do it again with lessons learned from the last one. You've got this.

Sweatting buckets is ok as long as you are drinking it back in! With electrolytes preferably and a gel or two! Always good to be well hyrated the day before too.

Do you do run/walk?  I've been doing it loads on any long run and it's really good for saving your legs and I reckon on a hot day good for keeping you a bit cooler.  I run for 9 minute and walk for 1.  I think it only costs me around 20 seconds every 10 minutes. The idea being that you can acutally hold running pace better and make more than that back by not tailing off in the last 5k.
