Should Compton fail again in the second innings then I do not see how he can play in the final game. He has been desperately out of form with five consecutive single digit scores (season average 24.71) but also doesn't bowl. Nor, for that matter (and I include Muyeye in that) do any of our top five. Therein lies the other issue - the balance of the side, the ability to include a spinner and not have a tail that starts at 8.
Dawkins would be the obvious replacement, but he doesn't help the balance and hasn't been in great form in the first or second XIs recently. This might sound a radical proposal and some might think I am being biased in suggesting this, but I would open with Ekansh. This is anything but a strange position for him as he did the job throughout age group cricket and he is probably one of our most technically sound batters.Ekansh batted at 3 in the CC last season scoring 49 (90) and 27 (24) against Northants then 33 (68) against Leicestershire and 60 (139) against Lancashire. That's 169 runs at an average of 42 (80) for the only times he's batted in the top three. The reason he's been batting at 7 this season is to accommodate all the missing batters from last season and the return of Northeast.
Worst case scenario is that Ekansh matches Compton's single digit scores - but he will still be there to bowl. Second best is that he gets say 25 and faces 50 plus deliveries of the new ball thereby meaning Northeast and co aren't rushing to get their pads on. Anything beyond that would be an added bonus but as he proved last season he is capable of batting in the top three.
There is another aspect to this too. For a youngster coming in at 7 can be mentally tough in terms of decision making especially when you end up batting with the tail. That has been Ekansh's issue sometimes as his shot selection has been impacted by the situation he finds himself in. Opening the batting is far easier as all the parameters are known ones.
Promoting Ekansh would mean that we can play five seamers and a spinner and our tail will still look better:

Some ridiculous scores today across the country. Yes it's mid September, but hardly badly autumnal weather. You wonder what sort of pitches have been prepared, and the how helpful the Dukes have been this season.
