  • After the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Norman French became the dominant language of power, law, and the upper classes in England, creating a strict linguistic divide that lasted for roughly 300 years.  It was the Pleading in English act in 1362 that returned English to our law courts and schools - and the first King to speak English as his first language after the Norman invasion was Henry IV in 1399.

A famous 1973 computerized study of the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary by Thomas Finkenstaedt and Dieter Wolff placed the precise number of direct French borrowings at 28.3%. However, because many Latin words actually entered English through French during the Middle Ages, linguists state that French has influenced up to 45% of our total vocabulary—accounting for roughly 80,000 words

  • Playing matchplay golf against someone you’re giving 16 shots to. They beat you on the last hole then strut off like they’re Rory McIlroy despite the fact that you actually played the course 15 shots less that them!
Yeah - sorry I will adjust my handicap for next time....

    Calling a formation 3-5-2 and not 5-3-2 when you're playing wing-backs.

Surely that is exactly what handicaps are for ?

Sounds like your gripe is with the person you were playing, not the system. To be fair, they sound like a bit of a nob. 😂

In fact, it sounds like the handicap system worked perfectly, giving you a close fought match despite being golfers of very different abilities.

Yeah that sounds exactly like the game you’d want to play. Fair golf.
  • Being so disappointed by yesterday’s match that I can’t be bothered to do the player’s marks!

Sorry @Lancashire Lad for all your hard work!

Why are we listening to Carragher on a Liverpool game again?
I’m guessing Neville will be on the Man U game later too.

This must be a conscious decision that Sky make, because they always seem to do it, but why?
Do people like having a biased commentator?

Still, he’ll get on well with his ‘spare’ nephew and stir things up . Bitterness is such a waste of life.

I think on every occasion I have used the red button, we have had a commentator biased towards the opposition.

I think sometimes it can seem that way, but I think that’s partly our own biases coming into play.
A lot of co-commentators are ex-pros and there’s a decent chance they might have played for one of the teams, so to an extent it’s a bit inevitable.

But Neville and Carragher are one club players. They could put them on commentary duty for literally any other game. But no, they always get their own club.
If Sky put an ex player of the opposition on commentary with them, I’d have less of an issue because it would have balance, but that never happens. The only exception is when Man U and Liverpool play each other. Then they're both on duty, which seems fair enough, but again, special treatment. 🙄

It’s gone on for too long now. You can’t even claim they’re providing any back room insight because neither of them have played for about 15 years. They played for different managers with different players in a different era. The game has moved on. All they provide is bias. It’s just not right.

For example, you may get irritated that a commentator gets something wrong about us, or is repeating clichés we’ve heard a million times, but he may also be getting stuff wrong and repeating clichés about the oppo, you just don’t know that!

People who have £35 million laying around spare who decide it should go to a political party.

Lord knows the good that money could've done, but no it has to go to Crypto Nige the bitcoin king, who makes millions supporting these organisations.
    Union payments to Labour Party.

    Business payments to Tories

would prefer political parties be centrally funded based on votes in previous elections.
The funding of political parties does need reforming( no pun intended), however there is a big difference between thousands of people paying a small political levy, as is the case with Union donations, and two crypto billionaires making huge 'donations', that dwarf any donations ever made in the UK.
Might I suggest the word you're searching desperately for is ENVY ?

Free black velvet / champagne and oysters to everyone that votes for them coming up 😉
Or £5K bribe for everyone, like Farage's corrupt mate in the USA.
He might not have enough to match that (not that it would ever get paid) but Nige’s idea of a working man’s lunch (the oysters and black velvet) might be possible.
Same as Trump, he's made many promises but none has been kept.
" He certainly seems to be getting camper...."

Well, he certainly doesn't live in a tent !

Earl Spencer has had to apologise to Piers Morgan for errors in his book. How can we believe anything else he says in the book.
  • Spencer also once vowed that he'd never make money from his sisters death.

Morgan wants the books pulped - it may be the best outcome for all concerned.

It’s not the handicap system that annoys me, anyone who plays regular golf signs up for it. It’s the bragging about it afterwards as if they’ve shot 72, not 92. Never a flicker of acknowledgement that it was the shots allocation that enabled them to compete. It’s far more likely that a 20 handicapper is going to score 5 below their handicap than someone who is playing off 5. This is particularly accentuated in the summer when a ‘bobbler’ can get 50+ yards extra roll. The bigger hitter doesn’t get the same advantage as they generally have to club down to maintain accuracy and approaches don’t hold the green as well.

Like I say, it’s not playing off handicaps that annoys me, it’s the unfiltered and consistent arrogance displayed by those who benefit most from the system that gets on my pip.

When you’re driving and you pull in to let someone go from the opposite direction due to parked cars etc and a moron behind you then decides try to overtake and blocks everyone. It’s happened three times to me in the last few weeks.
