I don't play golf at all, well I tried about 15 years ago for about 6 months, but I wasn't very good but I've found watching Rob Beckett's Let's Golf You Tube channel compelling viewing.  Especially when he shouts prick at the ball after he mishits it.  I find that quite comforting from my own memories of playing!

Anyhow, I've found myself walking back and forth up the driveway at Cherry Lodge most days while I wait for my daughters to come out of school, they go to the school opposite the entrance.  Does anyone play there?
I saw Rob Beckett on Sky yesterday when they showed the Pro-Am from Wentworth. He came over as very knowledgeable and highly entertaining around golf.

Also, if anyone else watched the coverage of yesterday I don't know if you were surprised as me to find than Anton Du Beke is a scratch golfer (actually plays off +0.4) and is a member at Wentworth.

As for Cherry Lodge. Played it a few times over the years, notably when there was a burnt out car behind a par 3 on the back 9. Good track but not played it in years.
mate of mine has played with Anton and said he's a top bloke and a pro caddy i know says Michael Macintyre a complete bellend
It's rare that a stage persona is the same as in real life.

I'm a hell of alot worse than I was back in the 90's / 2,000's
  • I am 82,I have Parkinsons,my handicap is now incaculable,I rarely hit a ball correctly, sod it,i play with mates my own age,who are also suffering various ailments which brings them down to my level. If I didnt make the effort to get out on the course and make a pratt of myself,I would be vegetating in an arm chair waiting for the inevitable.
  • Ingrebourne Links in Rainham Essex is a must to play , played it 3 times now and it doesn’t disappoint every time .

I’m up for a ‘CharltonLifers’ golf day if others fancy it. Orpington based here so Chelsfield and Lullingstone are my nearest public courses but open to suggestions. Been playing for 40+ years but still a 20 handicapper as only play about 4-6 times each year.
Maybe set the golf day up as a new thread, so it catches various other members eyes.
i play off 21 mostly at high elms, but haven’t checked this thread in over 2 years.
    might just work.

I play off sand and long grass mostly.
Would definitely be up for a CL golf day - some lovely courses in Cheshire :)

Played both courses last year and stayed at the hotel, courses were both in good nick at the time and to be honest, we had a stay and play deal where we got an evening meal included so we didnt venture out. Enjoyed both courses, probably the Woosnam a bit more

A good stay & play course is Thorpeness in Suffolk. Or a Marriott hotel that has a golf course like Lingfield, Ware or Forest of Arden.

Yeah, played them both. Never liked the signature hole (9th ?) where you lay up with your tee shot which then dog legs over water to a small green.

Place is fine but there’s a decent pub about 5 mins walk down the road (Cherry Tree?) which is definitely worth a visit . Very friendly and decent beer .

I got bitten by a dog in late feb/early March.

Played about 8 times over the year but it took me 3-4 weeks to recover every time as my hand ballooned after playing. I could barely break 90 at this point so went up to 14.

Had injections lately and my hand feels good as new.

Just shot 81, 78, 79 this week. Friends not very happy with me 😂

I played the new course at Castle Stuart yesterday - Old Petty by Tom Doak and his team. It is excellent, not 100% links but quirky by modern standards, with nods to old holes and courses. It is tough, there is always a side to miss and not miss. If not, you're left fighting to get leave recovery shot on the green.

That was my 202nd different 18 hole course.

Playing at the grove in Watford tomorrow. I'm pretty certain I'm not good enough to play a course like that but it's free or charge so not going to turn it down. Not expecting much regarding decent weather though 😏

Playing Sandy Links on the Melbourne sandbelt on Sunday for my Birthday.

Played there 7 or 8 times best was a 92.

The Greens are like glass as it gets hotter.

    Absolute beauty of a course.

Hovered around a 14 handicap in my prime....stopped playing for a while with a bum knee....picked it up again after knee replacement and bought a new driver. Coudn't hit the damn thing and had lessons etc to no avail and almost packed it up. Started to look at the single plane swing advocated by Moe Norman and am now striping the ball again. Can't get enough golf in before winter sets in (live in Massachusetts USA). I think my new knee changed my mechanics. Who knows but glad to be back playing well. Worth a look at that swing if you are struggling.

Have you played much on the Mornington Peninsula? Public golf is better down that way than in Melbourne. St Andrews Beach (also Tom Doak) is one of the world's best pay and plays.
