Would have preferred us sign no-one after not getting JRS than having this guy for 4 seasons and paying £1m for the privilege.

From what I understand there is every chance we will go back for JRS in the summer or Jan if his agent issue is sorted.

Think the medical was just one risk too far …. Agent sorted (ie old one fucked off) and Alli becomes cover for the TC.

We only signed him cos we thought TC was going anyway
The main point being we totally cocked up deployment of what little budget we had….. bringing a player in who was supposed to replace someone who then never left and then failing to bring in someone on the side we did need to - RW.

    Total shitshow.
I don’t actually disagree but signing replacements before you sell is what well run clubs do

I don’t believe we ever thought TC was going, especially not to Preston.
I know for a fact that we thought he was going and it’s a big part of why we bought Alli

We should place a ban on signing right wingers. Apter and Alli cost a fair bit of our moderate budget. Nkeng hasn't had a look in yet so god knows what level he's at

Find someone to take him on loan in January now.

A dud of the highest quality.

Whoever decided to pay a million for him should be sacked.
    Jones, Rodwell or Chapple?
    Take you’re pick.

It's quite obviously Chapple, who took him to Luton.  How you buy this bloke twice beggars belief.  With our general recruitment I have serious doubts about him.  Took Luton to L1 with parachute payments.

I don't mind the occasional stinker from a winger if they're at least trying stuff. He was not trying today.

Fair enough, but did we think he was going to Preston or did we think he had another possible destination?

It’s odd because at Luton he was seen as some sort of transfer guru.

Rather we just outsourced it to Tony Blooms company.

Got to think that Chapple will be worrying about the sack soon.

I watched a Pompey game late last season and he was admittedly a bit raw but he had a good game. I remember it because I wasn't expecting it.

Got to play him correctly anyone who done time at the FA doing coaching sessions knows that you play the ball into space in front of your winger not to feet .. why it’s very difficult to get up to speed from a standing start with a ball at your feet and defenders close by … he done ok but play to his strengths

His best attribute is close control, then he can get round players with clever turns. He did it at one point today and got his man booked. The problem seems to be when he has time to think, that composure can be learned but he’s 26. Very reminiscent of Tanto for me

Truly dreadful today.  One of the most memorable performances from an Addick and not in a good way

Seemed to struggle with the idea of competing for the ball. 'Oh i've lost it, never mind', 'Oh, o didn't really try very hard there and strangely the oppo went straight past me, how does that happen'

Unusual to see you defending a winger, thought you’d be demanding more end product.

As you say he’s 26, if he hasn’t got it by now then he never will (in my opinion).

Whether this was true or not, ridiculous that this summer we've ended up signing 3 players - Grant, Alli and Nkeng,  who all like to play in TC's best position.

I thought Nkeng was a rw?

He's another right footer, so typically in modern football would play on the left.

Woeful performance from him today and needs to buck his ideas up otherwise it’s looking like a dud of a signing

Awful performance today and sadly that looks ore like his standard rather than it being an anomaly. Bizarre signing especially when we paid money for him

He looks decent as a sub, not as a starter. Tbh that’s what £1.5m gets you at championship level

Exactly. £1.5m is nothing at this level. A quality starting winger sets you back £5m at least or you get incredibly lucky with a loan.

One small positive about thinking he was a crap signing since he stepped through the door is now some people actually start to agree opposed to being called negative and complaining.

Best thing about him is that he was cheaper than Tanto and Apter and when you have to use other players to make him seem somewhat competent you’re truly grasping at straws

I'm more concerned with the want to give out four year contracts, particularly given how we have been landed with a few that have not been successful and is going to cost us a lot of money that we do not have.

Yesterday his game meant we were effectively playing with 10 men. Not beating any defender and constantly losing the ball cheaply. Poor passing resulting again in losing the ball sometimes from promising positions and standing off his man when defending if you can call it that. May be a luxury player when/if the team is playing well but not one for a wet day in Cardiff.

    Certainly not a starter

Is it similar to Chelsea with the offset payment. We essentially spread the cost over the length of the contract?

Somewhat worrying if we need to do that for players of this calibre.

It’s that (sensible, not worrying) but also to protect us from a Thierry Small situation. Every contract entered into is a risk

Alli is 26 years old proved at both Luton and Pompey he wasn’t going to be this amazing championship player.

There is always a risk with a players contract but there was absolutely nothing to suggest he was going to become this incredible winger. We should have never rang Luton about him in the first place let alone hand him a 4 year deal
  • Is it really just a coincidence we get so many players with Luton links. That’s the biggest bugbear I have with our scouting…. Effective and modern set ups need to be based on advanced use of data, expansive networks and strong relationships.

You can’t tell me we use all of this and then keep getting players linked to Luton Town
