POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic v Bristol City: Saturday 10th October 2026: KO 12:30
A return to football after the extended international break brought Bristol City to the Valley for an early kick off. Josh Edwards returned to the starting eleven, alongside Billy Koumetio, himself returning from injury to re-take his place alongside Captain Lloyd Jones. Academy graduates Micah Mbick and MIles Leaburn formed s striking partnership of sizeable proportions to lead the attack, alongside fellow academy starlet Tyreece Campbell, returning from international duty, continuing his fine form, having scored his first goal for Jamaica.
There were only eight minutes on the clock when the Addicks struck first. Some good defensive play turned quickly to attack through Tyreece Campbell. He carried the ball to the edge of the box before cutting in and crossing into the middle. Karlan Grant seemed to intercept the pass, brining it down with a flick of this left leg, cushioning it down in front of him with finesse, before firing the home side into the lead from about seven yards.
Charlton were in the ascendancy for the first fifteen minutes. A series of long throws and corners put Bristol under pressure, resulting in half chances in and around the box. Then the away side had their chance when Josh Edward’s attempted header back to Okonkwo fell woefully short, putting a Bristol City winger through with only the keeper to beat. Okonkwo rushed him on the edge of the box and the ball went wide, letting Charlton off the hook. No pen, no goal.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before Bristol City were awarded a genuine penalty. On about twenty-six minutes, a bit of tricky footwork in the box saw Conor Coventry bite, leaving his extended leg to bring down Ballard. The penalty was dispatched with ease and the visitors were level again.
There were half chances for each side before the half was over. Bristol City grew more into it late in the half but both sides went in even.
Bristol City started the second half the better side. It wasn’t long before Nathan Jones made personnel and formation changes. Micah Mbick went off for Kayne Ramsay, and Josh Edwards made way for Ivan Mesik on about fifty-two minutes. The changes brought the Addicks some joy almost immediately, though both sides were wasteful and things turned quite scrappy. A period of sustained pressure in the Bristol CIty half produced some threatening play but not enough to find the breakthrough.
After about sixty-four minutes, Bristol City made their own changes in an effort to swing momentum back their way. For the next ten minutes, Charlton had a decent spell of possession, though again, there was little of consequence to show for it. On about seventy-six minutes Miles Leaburn burst forward into space, crossing into the box. Tyreece Campbell’s shot was buckled and then the ball bobbled around a bit in front of goal. He had another bite at the cherry but a goal-mouth scramble kept the Addicks from taking the lead. Conor Coventry had made a good run wasn’t found, unfortunately.
Bristol then made more changes, as did the home side, swapping Miles Leaburn for Charlie Kelman, and Karlan Grant for Harvey Knibbs. Kelman’s runs in behind began to cause problems for the visitors. On eighty-seven minutes Millenic Alli replaced a tired Tyreece Campbell. Moments later, Koumetio was fouled on the edge of the box, giving the Addicks a free kick in the final minute of regular time. Harvey Knibbs stepped up and fired a shot into the top right corner, though Tickle was equal to the challenge and managed to parry it out for a corner. Three minutes of added time were awarded, which fizzled out with no real consequence.
It ended all square, with the second half failing to live up to the promise of the first. Bristol faded away and the second half was disjointed and scrappy. Charlton had the better of the opportunities but were unable to capitalise. Frustrating but that’s the level we’re at. Bristol City looked capable of finding the next gear but the Addicks held firm and limited them to remain undefeated at the Valley.
Charlton 1 Bristol City 1

Can't really comment as was away for the whole game having a birthday lunch in my honour, but although we scored first, a draw on the limited knowledge against a side near us seems ok, but would stand ready to be corrected...🤷♂️11

Much better playing with 5 at the back. Think we need to go back to it16
-
Positives - Billy was superb. Edwards and Ramsay got minutes. Still unbeaten at home. It’s another point when we didn’t play that well.Negatives - Jones clearly wants to play 4-2-3-1 yet doesn’t trust any of our three number 10s to actually start there. Thought we only had control when went to 3-5-2 and not for the first time this season without Chalobah.17

OK with the LOL's but least you could do is wish me a bloody Happy Birthday...eastterrace6168 said:Can't really comment as was away for the whole game having a birthday lunch in my honour, but although we scored first, a draw on the limited knowledge against a side near us seems ok, but would stand ready to be corrected...🤷♂️17 -
First half I thought we were lucky to be kevrl after a continuous drip drip if silly errors and lapses in concentration. Second half we gradually took control, finished stronger and possibly deserved the win (our finishing was the difference).
So only a point at home but a big improvement at the end.2 -
Nice not to roll over, and good to see Billy K back. Otherwise a mostly disappointing snooze fest. In money terms, maybe £15-worth of professional football, with hindsight, bar any other considerations.3

Defended well but we’ve no ideas going forward as usual .I still don’t see what all the fuss is about with Mbick. He’s certainly not done anything in a first team shirt yet . Today he was anonymous.Bristol City looked dangerous so a point isn’t a disaster.Plus points . We are still undefeated at home . Billy slotted back into the defence well . Grant looked keen .It’s going to be a long season .11

Put it this way mate, consider yourself lucky today is your birthday and you didn't watch that dross. We are generally dreadful in front of goal and if teams work that out and decide to go all out attack on us, we will get soundly beaten on the regular.
Many happy returns tho.6 -
Positives:
Good point against a decent team.
On the balance of chances we should have really won.
We looked decent 2nd half after the subs and formation change.
Negatives:
Cant score more than 1 goal, cant keep a clean sheet.
Had to revert back to 3 at the back again, which shows that plan A is just not working at the moment.
We just look like we lack quality in every department.
Overall:
I’m just happy football is back.6 -
I feel it was a fortunate point, are defending was flaky, they got behind the defenders to often and are clestences were to often far too short. Once again the strikers are just not good enough.
Lucky they over hit their passes as often as we do.6 -

Jones calls subs gamechangers, but I think today they changed the game for the worse. I also think starting Edwards was a mistake.
A solid first 15 minutes but we were pretty pants after that.
I think Mcnamara ending the game at right wing was a weird choice, and TC was clearly spent, but Alli mustn't be up to much in training if he can only get on for 3 mins at the end.
Knibbs and Kelman did nothing to keep up the pressure that we built up leading up to the big TC chance, and it felt like the game was always going to peter out after that.
A point gained but yet again were ultimately undone by an individual mistake by us rather than a glorious piece of play by the opponent4 -
Would’ve taken it this morning. Same old we look shakey at the back with 4 at the back and look toothless going forward with 3 at the back. Edwards looking sooo rusty and very league one, have a feeling it will take him a long time to get back to the level he was at.2

He needs a more positive combination of the two in midfield if he wants to play that way. I don’t think 3-5-2 is the answer either.stjohnshill said:Positives - Billy was superb. Crying out for a #10….Mbick not the solution….beginning to think NJ doesn’t know what a #10 looks like….3

An ok point in isolation but that's 6 games without a win. Including home games against QPR, Portsmouth and Bristol City.
I think we actually look worse going forward than we did last season. And the less said about our midfield, the better.16 -
Thought Mbick and Edwards were poor and Koumetio looked rusty. Looked better second half but lack of goals will cost us.
Ref wasn't great...3 -
Don't make me laugh, it's his first game back in best part of a year, give the lad a chance eh,...Diebythesword said:Would’ve taken it this morning. Cov has given away a couple of pens now!1

We can,'t play 4 at the back properly as we have no effective 10. We can't play 5 at the back as we only have one proper wingback.
We will be grinding out draws until that problem is fixed7 -
Lately we seem to start well and then lose any sort of control after a bright start. Not sure if it’s a confidence thing but our back line seem to drop deep far to early leaving a massive gap between them and our midfield. Thought Leaburn was fantastic today. A point against them isn’t a bad result but we need to find a way of linking play or it’s not going to be pretty2

Been critical of Jones in the past for taking too long to make subs or change things but moving to 3 5 2 after only 8 minutes of dross in the second half saved us getting beaten today.
Sadly I think this is the way forward for us again, at least over the next few games.
Big shout out to Billy. A clear MOM today.
And whilst great to see Josh back, he was so rusty he looks miles away from being ready to come back into the team.
I fear we have another relegation battle firmly on our hands.

The subs at the beginning of the second half totally changed the game, we hadn’t really left our defensive third up until that point. They were completely the right callsam3110 said:Jones calls subs gamechangers, but I think today they changed the game for the worse. I also think starting Edwards was a mistake.

It could have been a lot worse.
Uundoubtedly ref should have sent Edwards off.
Yet another terrible watch. Not looking forward to watching this kind of football throughout winter.9 -
We played for the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes. Shame about the bit in the middle.

Why on earth should Edwards have been sent off???DaisyEdwards said:It could have been a lot worse.

We were better offensively today (just about) but looked so poor defensively. Too many errors. The starting lineup didn’t really work and looked better with a 5 at the back.Josh Edwards I want to give some slack too but he was miles off it today (hopefully gets up to speed quickly) but Mesik is light years ahead of him.A very touch watch again and another game extending the winless streak. Similar story to last season, good start but will slowly sink down the table.Another three week break from being subjected to that wouldn’t go amiss actually..4

If the latter, it's a fair call.2 -
Also - just how many tickets did they give away in Greenwich park?? Thought I was watching a game in Germany not England with all the people around me. I imagine quite a lot to get us above 20k attendance.2
-
I didn't think we were anywhere near as bad as many are makng out, huge improvement to what we saw before break26

Yes in upper west block
Q a lot of tourists, who liked taking their beers to the seats while watching the game.1
