Gosh you lot moan. We played alright. So did Bristol.  If TC had managed to put that one in the net that somehow floated over, you’d all be saying we were definitely making the play-offs. Another day we win that. Another day it’s not a penalty. Another day Okonkwo gets sent off. Long season ahead. COYR
Perhaps if we all suffered from Folie à deux

Don't understand all the praise for Koumetio - he was poor compared to his previous performances but maybe Edwards didn't help.

Mbick looked lost - should be out on loan.

Most games in the Championship are going to be difficult for CAFC over the duration of the 100 odd minutes.

That was a point won not two points lost as most refs especially Bobby Madly would've sent Arthur off after the poor header back by Edwards and the coming together occured just in the D or arc so red card would've followed.
If the offence is in the area then a penalty is given and the keeper stay on as it was a genuine attempt to get to the ball.

We started on the front foot and scored the early goal by Grant from a fluid move started by the MOM Koumetio.
The problem Charlton are going to have is that in the 2nd tier most sides have midfield players who can dictate play and Scott Twine certainly can; he linked so much and we need Chalobah to do that.

Both Skipp and Coventry are honest players who battle away with tackles and try to get the team going but they are not in the class of Chalobah who we have missed big time.

A formation change was needed and it stopped City's momentum. The rusty Edwards and the raw Mbick went off and the returning Ramsay and Mesik joined the action.

Despite TC early goal scoring form he isn't a penalty area Godden and the 3 chances in several seconds couldn't find the net. TBF the defenders did make it difficult but Tyreece should've buried the 3rd chance.

1-1 and we are mid table after 9 matches. Any game we don't lose is a positive despite wanting more.

For Charlton the joint MOM were Billy Koumetio and Tom Reeves !

Koumetio was very good overall but his lack of awareness led to the penalty being given away. He thought he had another defender to the left of him so left the Bristol City attacker rather than getting tight to him

Nightmare journey to Charlton with no trains going to London Bridge from Orpington.
    Same again getting home.
As for the match itself despite a decent start and an early goal it's obvious we are short of quality in midfield.
Until we rectify this i expect every game will be a struggle.
Highlight of the day was the bloke who hit the meerkat with a perfect delivery.
    Sign him up.
Had the same train problems and gave up at Victoria when the best I could achieve was missing the first 20 minutes.  Sounds like I had a lucky escape based on most of this post match thread. 😀
Same - I missed the game because of the trains. Southeastern absolutely useless!

Koumetio was okay but I'm not sure of all the praise he was getting. Him and Edwards gave Bristol too much space and Billy's passing wasn't great. I was surprised at how deep Skipp was playing as well.

I like Koumetio as a player but he looked rusty yesterday and the unfit Edwards didn't help our defending.

Pleased thar we had Mesic and Ramsay on the bench.

On the face of it, yes, it's an OK point in isolation against a team that should be there or thereabouts in the playoff picture at the end of the season. I'm pretty sure I saw several predictions across the interwebs for this game to end up 1-1 and thus did it end that way. Grant's goal was very well taken and, for my mind, it was a penalty - a tired TC miss at the end probably would have represented some points stolen rather than earned if it had gone in.
However, we're at home and we need to take games like this and turn a few more in to wins. I just don't think we have the quality to do so in either midfield or in creative/wide areas. Echoing the point from earlier in this thread, Coventry and Skipp isn't a combination that will create anywhere near enough. Skipp is better than say, Docherty, but having 2 CDMs is making us play this brand of hateball NJ loves so much. It really doesn't matter who plays in the 10, up front or on either wing when these two together are your engine room. They are too similar, attempt to occupy the same space and are not progressive enough. You need ONE of them, not both. However, NJ is not brave enough to play without both - he won't gamble on results when he knows he could lose his job if it goes wrong. So, he plays the percentage grindy football that means more draws and less losses. Another manager would at least attempt Carey/JR-C/Knibbs/Mwamba in that 8 role, but he's playing to inch us over the points line. It's horrific to watch, imho.
Defensively, Billy was a massive, massive difference-maker today. First time I have got to see him play in person and the lad was a colossus. However, the less said about Josh Edwards today, the better. Hirakawa beat him so many times and he looked completely off it. We can't risk him starting games, and I genuinely hope that NJ felt forced into playing him due to the fitness of the other players. Mesik gave us so much, and just more action and endeavor.
I dunno. We've got two huge away games now. Burnley found something against the insanity that is Watford today, so they'll see us as the opportunity in the week. Prepare for more parking the bus. Then at Watford, we have to at least try and contest the game, but it'll be a nailbiter decided by more inches and moments. I'm so concerned we get dragged into this dogfight again. We look like a promoted L1 team, still. I can only pray that we have some pennies put aside for January to try and fix the holes.
Until NJ gives up on Coventry and Skipp, every game will be a coin flip at best. The formation around that is irrelevant - it's that combo causing us to look so toothless.
The problem is that these are our other options. I think playing any of them back there would make us a worse team than playing Skipp-Coventry, yes we’d be better on the ball but off the ball much worse so we’d probably lose more games. Mwamba looks great but starting in that role at West Brom he struggled. Knibbs and Carey are not number 8s, and Costello just isn’t mobile enough to play there for us. I don’t think putting any of them in there improves things

Chalobah transforms this team, but until he’s fit again we will have to make do with Skipp and Coventry because unfortunately we don’t have anything better. Jones clearly wanted to transform our midfield this summer and the owners haven’t delivered for him, Chalobah on a free and Skipp and Ouma on loan just isn’t anywhere near what we needed this summer
So you don’t think Knibbs, Carey, Costello or Mwamba are good enough. Why have them in the squad then? We only have to ’make do’ with Skipp and Coventry because we play not to lose. We never play to win. Choose one of those two + one other. You get 5 subs these days so why not 30 minutes with each of Carey, Costello, Knibbs, Mwamba. The reason they now don’t look good enough is because they get no game time, and then it’s a vicious circle. They probably aren’t comfortable in their roles either. Tell each of them what you want from them (realistically within their skill set), tell them the position is theirs to prove themselves in, and let them show what they’re made of, each playing to their strengths.  I’m sure that you’d see a big reaction from them all.

I think our team has players greater than the sum of its parts. They’re not brilliant but I’m sure that we could do better. Sure, we’d let in more goals and lose more matches,  but I think we could have far more energy and inventiveness going forward so we’d win more too. Instead of drawing five matches, we’d win 2 and lose 3 for example. Some fans on here seem to want to force us to bow down and hail NJ the saviour. I get that appreciation of what he has done but @th0rryy was right calling it ’hateball.’ Everyone, bar a few obstinate NJ diehards, hate it. I reckon most fans go out of a sense of duty, and get no pleasure from it at all.

It’s so obviously a penalty, he runs into Coventry’s leg. He anticipates the contact for sure but that’s what any good forward does.

The barometer here is always would we be annoyed if we didn’t get a penalty for that? The answer is obviously yes

    Start with the positives.

    We remain unbeaten at home.
We actually scored during our bright start for a change.
Billy is back and looked our best defender.
We limited BC to a single shot on target from inside our box (the penalty).

    Negatives

An incredibly frustrating day. Watching that game I struggle to see what we worked on for 3 weeks. Now it might be my own pet peeves, but there are 3 major issues from prior to the break that haven't improved. Two relating to set pieces that make me wonder if Hylton is up to the job.

    1. How do we always let our opponents have the short option available at corners? Honestly our opponents have all picked up on it, yet somehow it has completely gone over Hylton's head since he took over as set piece coach. Every game TC goes to the edge of the box, Grant goes to the front of the six yard box and everyone else mills about in the middle. No one tracks the man going short, and we invariably have to scramble to cover it and get pulled out of place. It's a simple fix that we have an inability to address.

    2. Bringing everyone back inside the box. This means that our opponents can stick 2 men on the edge of our box to recycle the second ball. Every. Damn. Game.

Honestly just leave TC up on the halfway line and those two players have to drop deeper. If they decide to leave TC 1v1 I'd back him to beat any defender for speed at this level. This has the added benefit of making our box less congested if they want someone on the edge of the box, or going short, as they have to drop players out of the box. Now I'm sure that they're using stats somewhere that say across the season, with an average squad, this is more effective, but in all honesty our squad is probably on the below average side of things and we need to get any advantage we can. This tactic directly lead to BCs penalty and has lead to numerous opportunities for opponents this season already.

    3. We stand around like statues waiting for the pass. This is infuriating. It allows our opponents to get back in their defensive shape as we are too slow moving the ball forward. We don't pull anyone out of position. We could have prime Pirlo pulling the strings and he wouldn't be able to create anything as no one moves to give the passer an option. Even when we play the long ball up to Leaburn we aren't moving for the flick on.

We had Campbell, Grant & Mbick around him yesterday and we just stand waiting for the ball. BC were moving and beat us to so many passes we should be getting to, even if we don't get to them at least contesting the ball would have meant they didn't have time to pick out the next pass.

We aren't playing the NFL, not everything starts as a set piece where you can't move before the ball is snapped, but somehow we don't seem to understand this.

Outside of this, Josh looks like he's lost a step with his injury. I really feel for the guy as he's all heart when he plays and leaves it all out on the pitch. Hopefully he gets back to previous levels as he gains more match fitness

Skipp seemed to take a step back yesterday. Before the international break he was improving every game, but yesterday looked slow and got caught out of position, although some of that has to do with covering large areas of the pitch where we left BC with too much space to play in.

Okonkwo was lucky to stay on the pitch, the ref and linesman definitely let us get away with one when he brought down Hirakawa. That was an Edwards getting caught out of position and then messing up a header situation.

Next up Burnley who just smashed Watford 4-0. If you're into xG they turned the same amount of xG we had yesterday into 3 more goals. Not sure if that says they were lucky or just far more clinical. Would have preferred to face them before the international break where they were bereft of confidence.

There’s was a clear penalty and how Arthur didn’t get a red for that foul I still don’t know. If it had been the other way round Jones would have lost the plot.

After our next three games we'll have played all the current bottom 7 in our first 12 games.  I worry our return from those games won't be enough to keep us away from a dogfight.
I agree - I'm not expecting either Norwich or Burnley to be in the bottom half come the New Year & both will be hard games coming up.

I honestly never thought I would say this but Nathan Jones now needs to go. He has taken Charlton as far as he can, and things are rapidly going downhill. Unless something changes fast I fear that  relegation is approaching.

I have only repeated your last paragraph because this is exactly what was said about Curbs before he left. Do we never learn?

Excellent point we stated very well playing a new 442 formation and scored a well taken goal through Grant .. but think City then changed their system which made it more difficult for us and they come into the game .. a pen ?? not sure seem to make slot of it and that goal gave them bit of confidence.. second half we changed systems went to 5 at the back then changed again to 3421 very even tactic game .. big chance Campbell has to do better should score , then 92 mins Knibbs free kick just going in top corner , until the keeper finger nails tipped it over so close … all in all fair point and deserved point … if you look how far we come again lost 1-2 last year and today there was nothing between us and an established championship side ..

MOM Billy , but Skipp and Coventry outstanding in mid
not having that - skipp is a bang average footballer - the single most glaringly obvious position in our team that needs a major upgrade
There's a certain unemployed Scottish player out there who could do everything that Skipp is currently doing, and more, more combative, more positive and occasionally he even had a crack at goal.

There has to be more to Skipp, eg the delicious through ball for Campbell's disallowed goal a few weeks ago.

Yesterday I thought perhaps that there were no options for the forward pass, but when Ramsay came on, he was instantly threading good balls forward.

Maybe Skipp is under instructions to just keep the ball ticking over, sideways, backwards etc, but that isn't what we need!

So boring, I don't think I've ever been so unexcited watching Charlton play.

Maybe I was spoilt growing up in the era of Hales, Flanagan, Powell etc, when we'd regularly score 3,4,5, sometimes even 6.

agreed although docherty isn't the answer either

I now understand why both Stoke City and Southampton decided to dispense with Nathan Jones.

His dealings in the transfer market are atrocious, and the style of football he plays is also atrocious.

Yesterday Bristol City was exactly the type of game that we needed to win.

Yet he starts with Mbick and Miles Leaburn . Despite playing nine matches this season Miles has not scored one single goal. Yet Nathan decides to play Miles alongside Mbick, who also is yet to score! So surprise, surprise still no goals from our front two attackers.

When Lyndon Dykes played alongside Miles we had a chance of scoring, but Nathan decided to dispense with Lyndon’s services and play Mbick instead?

I appreciate that Mbiick is an emerging talent, but I have watched every minute that Mbick has played, and I cannot remember anything that he has done that has impressed me. He looks out of his depth playing in the Championship.

i don't agree that NJ should go, he's worked wonders but another baffling decision was to give mbick his home start debut and play him in the hole rather than his usual position  - would have made sense if he'd gone up top and Leaburn went in the hole

For me it's a perfectly timed dive.  Coventry's leg is stationary and I don't think there is any law that says he can't do that.  The attaker is certainly looking for it (doesn't make it a penalty) and by the position of his legs, before impact, he is already going down.  So, in my opinion, it was perfectly timed (well done attacker) to fool the ref and players but not slow-mo video.

Should have backed him in the summer though, instead of going through the same issues as last season. I currently have zero faith that he will get what he needs in January, even if the players are available.

    Frustrating day.

Frustrating that after starting well and taking an early lead we didn't score again, allowing City back into the game.

After they worked out our 442,  Bristol were well on top, probably should have had a pen and red card for Arthur before getting a locked on pen.

2nd half City were still all over us until some very early subs.

The game see-sawed between us being on top and then City but we had the better chances, their keeper making a good save from TC, who should have netted the rebound, and a great save from Knibbs.

Probably a draw was fair but we could have nicked it.

Our football, especially our two centre mids, was often pedestrian. How we miss Chalobah!

Twine and City looked much slicker and will wonder how they didn't win.

Good to see Billy K, Ramsay and Bell back.

Mbick still has a lot of development to do and Edwards needs more games to get fully match fit, at least I hope that is all it is.

Still unbeaten at home but a long time since we won a game.
Tut, tut Henry. Law 12 is quite clear. A penalty is awarded against a goalkeeper fouling an opponent in the area, but if the referee believes the goalkeeper made a genuine attempt to play the ball, the keeper is yellow carded; in my view. Arthur did attempt to play the ball and not the player.

You are not Terry whatsisname on Charlton TV are you  😀 . You would find it hard to find somebody whose knowledge of the laws is so poor as his is.

The fact nobody really complained tells a story, it looked a blatant pen, Cov got out manoeuvered not for the 1st time. Players are better and  smarter in the champ and we seem to fall for a lot of the dark arts quite easily.
