    Frustrating day.

Frustrating that after starting well and taking an early lead we didn't score again, allowing City back into the game.

After they worked out our 442,  Bristol were well on top, probably should have had a pen and red card for Arthur before getting a locked on pen.

2nd half City were still all over us until some very early subs.

The game see-sawed between us being on top and then City but we had the better chances, their keeper making a good save from TC, who should have netted the rebound, and a great save from Knibbs.

Probably a draw was fair but we could have nicked it.

Our football, especially our two centre mids, was often pedestrian. How we miss Chalobah!

Twine and City looked much slicker and will wonder how they didn't win.

Good to see Billy K, Ramsay and Bell back.

Mbick still has a lot of development to do and Edwards needs more games to get fully match fit, at least I hope that is all it is.

Still unbeaten at home but a long time since we won a game.
Tut, tut Henry. Law 12 is quite clear. A penalty is awarded against a goalkeeper fouling an opponent in the area, but if the referee believes the goalkeeper made a genuine attempt to play the ball, the keeper is yellow carded; in my view. Arthur did attempt to play the ball and not the player.

You are not Terry whatsisname on Charlton TV are you  😀 . You would find it hard to find somebody whose knowledge of the laws is so poor as his is.
It was outside the box so becomes DOGSO and a red. The only saving grace is the player got a shot off and the ref clearly decided he wasn’t going to catch it up

On the face of it, yes, it's an OK point in isolation against a team that should be there or thereabouts in the playoff picture at the end of the season. I'm pretty sure I saw several predictions across the interwebs for this game to end up 1-1 and thus did it end that way. Grant's goal was very well taken and, for my mind, it was a penalty - a tired TC miss at the end probably would have represented some points stolen rather than earned if it had gone in.
However, we're at home and we need to take games like this and turn a few more in to wins. I just don't think we have the quality to do so in either midfield or in creative/wide areas. Echoing the point from earlier in this thread, Coventry and Skipp isn't a combination that will create anywhere near enough. Skipp is better than say, Docherty, but having 2 CDMs is making us play this brand of hateball NJ loves so much. It really doesn't matter who plays in the 10, up front or on either wing when these two together are your engine room. They are too similar, attempt to occupy the same space and are not progressive enough. You need ONE of them, not both. However, NJ is not brave enough to play without both - he won't gamble on results when he knows he could lose his job if it goes wrong. So, he plays the percentage grindy football that means more draws and less losses. Another manager would at least attempt Carey/JR-C/Knibbs/Mwamba in that 8 role, but he's playing to inch us over the points line. It's horrific to watch, imho.
Defensively, Billy was a massive, massive difference-maker today. First time I have got to see him play in person and the lad was a colossus. However, the less said about Josh Edwards today, the better. Hirakawa beat him so many times and he looked completely off it. We can't risk him starting games, and I genuinely hope that NJ felt forced into playing him due to the fitness of the other players. Mesik gave us so much, and just more action and endeavor.
I dunno. We've got two huge away games now. Burnley found something against the insanity that is Watford today, so they'll see us as the opportunity in the week. Prepare for more parking the bus. Then at Watford, we have to at least try and contest the game, but it'll be a nailbiter decided by more inches and moments. I'm so concerned we get dragged into this dogfight again. We look like a promoted L1 team, still. I can only pray that we have some pennies put aside for January to try and fix the holes.
Until NJ gives up on Coventry and Skipp, every game will be a coin flip at best. The formation around that is irrelevant - it's that combo causing us to look so toothless.
The problem is that these are our other options. I think playing any of them back there would make us a worse team than playing Skipp-Coventry, yes we’d be better on the ball but off the ball much worse so we’d probably lose more games. Mwamba looks great but starting in that role at West Brom he struggled. Knibbs and Carey are not number 8s, and Costello just isn’t mobile enough to play there for us. I don’t think putting any of them in there improves things

Chalobah transforms this team, but until he’s fit again we will have to make do with Skipp and Coventry because unfortunately we don’t have anything better. Jones clearly wanted to transform our midfield this summer and the owners haven’t delivered for him, Chalobah on a free and Skipp and Ouma on loan just isn’t anywhere near what we needed this summer
So you don’t think Knibbs, Carey, Costello or Mwamba are good enough. Why have them in the squad then? We only have to ’make do’ with Skipp and Coventry because we play not to lose. We never play to win. Choose one of those two + one other. You get 5 subs these days so why not 30 minutes with each of Carey, Costello, Knibbs, Mwamba. The reason they now don’t look good enough is because they get no game time, and then it’s a vicious circle. They probably aren’t comfortable in their roles either. Tell each of them what you want from them (realistically within their skill set), tell them the position is theirs to prove themselves in, and let them show what they’re made of, each playing to their strengths.  I’m sure that you’d see a big reaction from them all.

I think our team has players greater than the sum of its parts. They’re not brilliant but I’m sure that we could do better. Sure, we’d let in more goals and lose more matches,  but I think we could have far more energy and inventiveness going forward so we’d win more too. Instead of drawing five matches, we’d win 2 and lose 3 for example. Some fans on here seem to want to force us to bow down and hail NJ the saviour. I get that appreciation of what he has done but @th0rryy was right calling it ’hateball.’ Everyone, bar a few obstinate NJ diehards, hate it. I reckon most fans go out of a sense of duty, and get no pleasure from it at all.

I assume you’re looking forward to the Norwich City game then? Why bother if you hate it so much?

Whilst his football isnt attractive, Jones doesnt need to go. He is 2 players away from having a team that can compete with anyone in the division. Just need to back him in january
Should have backed him in the summer though, instead of going through the same issues as last season. I currently have zero faith that he will get what he needs in January, even if the players are available.
And this is the depressing thing - we can all see what's needed and i'm sure NJ can as well but it won't happen - we don't have the funds, owners, revenue or whatever else is needed to make it happen - having said that, NJ isn't entirely clear here - we're trying to win a game  at home with 2 defenders playing at wing back and 2 defensive midfielders

It’s so obviously a penalty, he runs into Coventry’s leg. He anticipates the contact for sure but that’s what any good forward does.

The barometer here is always would we be annoyed if we didn’t get a penalty for that? The answer is obviously yes
For me it's a perfectly timed dive.  Coventry's leg is stationary and I don't think there is any law that says he can't do that.  The attaker is certainly looking for it (doesn't make it a penalty) and by the position of his legs, before impact, he is already going down.  So, in my opinion, it was perfectly timed (well done attacker) to fool the ref and players but not slow-mo video.
I get it’s your opinion, but I just can’t understand how anyone who watches football can see that as a dive, “perfectly timed” or otherwise. It’s a mistake from Coventry and 100% penalty.

100% mate, the guy was going over before any contact was made...

Think he took advantage of Coventry's leg being there
may be he should not have dangled his leg out there.

That's what I said, ie if it was outside the box. The logic being if it was inside the box, the goal scoring opportunity has not been denied because a penalty has been awarded, as a goal scoring opportunity. If it was outside the box the doalscoring opportunity has been denied.

It was a good point against a very good opponent. We are a bottom 6 team in this league [with this squad] and we need to see that the club cannot compete with the best in this league.

I agree with many of the comments, good and bad, but let’s keep in context . We spent very little in the window compared to other teams and it will take a few seasons to up our spend on better players.

If we stand still/ tread water we won’t get the chance of a few seasons to get better players, other sides will improve. To not invest the best they can would be criminal and we will be league 1 again.

What a weird post, considering where the club was before NJ arrived..

NJ may not be our long term answer, but he deserves a lot of credit for what he has done to improve our position.

Spurs have spent £300m and are shit. We spent £1.5m.

I’m not an NJ die-hard, but he is doing a decent job with what he has.

I just hope LJ refrains from telling Arthur which way to go for a pen.
Thats three times he has gone the wrong way; alternatively just do the opposite of what Lloyd tells you to do

the problem with that defense is we are likely to be relegated due to how poor our recruitment is due to lack of funds.

Out of a sense of duty, and love of the club, I suppose.
    How about you?
Because I don’t hate it like you do.

It could have been a lot worse.
Uundoubtedly ref should have sent Edwards off.
Yet another terrible watch. Not looking forward to watching this kind of football throughout winter.
A bit harsh on your grandson.

All in all a fair result. Neither team did enough to win it & second half we dug in before 5 at the back gave us some solidity.....even if meant we lost any attacking threat.

Big problem is that it's another home game we didn't win. 2 away games coming up - if we lose both our good start to the season could be up in smoke.
And if we win both we’re in the play offs.
You said you had quit CL, but straight back to the ultra negativity.

I think my takeaway summary of yesterday is that I think we'll be fine come the end of the season but there's a good chance it's going to be another tough season on the eyes and for the goals scored column

Yes that’s literally what I said, I don’t think any of them are better than Skipp and Coventry are at playing in midfield

Knibbs and Carey are number 10s, neither of them are good enough in the championship playing in the Skipp/Coventry positions. There’s plenty that debate whether they are good enough in their actual position let alone playing deeper

Mwamba looks great but I’m not sure chucking him in from the start is wise, it didn’t go well at West Brom, I’m not sure he’s quite ready for that yet. I’d like to see him in the 10 where there’s less damage if he does give the ball away

Costello I just don’t think is mobile enough to play instead of Coventry and Skipp. Maybe in games where we have more of the ball he’d be ok but that almost never happens.

Carey has been the biggest disappointment for me so far this season, I just thought he went off the boil after working hard last season, expected him to kick on a bit and improve on his weaknesses, it hasn’t happened.

This season, the "midtable" section of the Championship is going to be massive, as there are an awful lot of average sides this season and no basket case ones, resulting in an incredibly close league.

I'm concerned by our stodgy play and lack of goals, but if that Knibbs freekick had gone in, we'd be 5th. We are 7 points below the leaders Swansea, and 6 points above 3rd bottom Burnley. Cardiff looked way better than us 3 weeks ago, but lost at Blackburn yesterday, and are still 6 points below us.

I heard someone say after the Soton and Pompey game that Pompey will be hoping to push up the table, but realistically their current 19th place is roughly where you'd expect them to finish. And indeed where I'd expect us to finish.

I now understand why both Stoke City and Southampton decided to dispense with Nathan Jones.

His dealings in the transfer market are atrocious, and the style of football he plays is also atrocious.

Yesterday Bristol City was exactly the type of game that we needed to win.

Yet he starts with Mbick and Miles Leaburn . Despite playing nine matches this season Miles has not scored one single goal. Yet Nathan decides to play Miles alongside Mbick, who also is yet to score! So surprise, surprise still no goals from our front two attackers.

When Lyndon Dykes played alongside Miles we had a chance of scoring, but Nathan decided to dispense with Lyndon’s services and play Mbick instead?

I appreciate that Mbiick is an emerging talent, but I have watched every minute that Mbick has played, and I cannot remember anything that he has done that has impressed me. He looks out of his depth playing in the Championship.

I honestly never thought I would say this but Nathan Jones now needs to go. He has taken Charlton as far as he can, and things are rapidly going downhill. Unless something changes fast I fear that  relegation is approaching.

You ade entitled to your negative opinon but you are just plain wrong.Jones is the right man for the job.thete are no quick fixes out there .No manager can priduce man city football with poundland players .he performs miracles on thd budget he is given

IMO...the players are still giving their all for NJ, impressive when we are  struggling week after week to play decent football. We saw with Chalobah playing how the whole team comes alive, and especially Coventry,  when you have a proper playmaker in the side. Missing out on that midfielder in the summer was big, and i really hope the money we didn't spend is there in January to try again
Its going to be a long season,  but I think we are marginally better than last year.
Bit meh but there you go..

Coventry and Skipp are too similar, but until Chalobah is fit again they are definitely our best midfield 2 unfortunately
Chalobah will, at best, start around another 10 or so games this season (if, as I suspect, his injury record for the last two seasons sustains), and we can't pick what those games will be. As such, I strongly contest that we should not be relying on the combination of Skipp and Coventry as our starting midfielders when Chalobah is unavailable, and particularly not in home games.
As you say, Coventry has looked better when not playing with Skipp and with Chalobah. By playing Skipp, you make Coventry worse. My solution? Honestly, we need to give Mwamba the opportunity to start home games and take the handbrake off for the first half of games and take games to the opposition / be more progressive. If we get a lead and we are trying to hold a lead, yes, bring Skipp on. But not starting games at home. Add in Chalobah when fit to the mix, but stop the 2 CDM combo. What we have lacked is someone to look forward with the play and Mwamba can do that. When you already have a flat back 4 that will already naturally stay deep for the most part AND Coventry, our capacity to score goals just flatlines when Skipp is there.
Yes, Mwamba struggled against an experienced WBA midfield away from home. However, of all the non-Chalobah midfield options, if there was ever one to try and give more minutes too, it would be him. I genuinely feel it doesn't immediately mean we're going to be weaker defensively and I just think the benefit of at LEAST trying him to feed into our forward players could be worth it. Maybe it helps to unlock someone like Knibbs too if he got a run in the 10 too.
We can't just persist with this midfield combo until January - we can and should be more proactive. You almost have to count Chalobah out because his injury record. Of the 15 or so games before January, we need to get some more wins at home or we go down, it's that simple. At best, Chalobah plays maybe 4 or 5? It's just not good enough and we drag ourselves into the mire because we negate ourselves going forward.
I just think NJ will continue to throw darts at the team sheet until something sticks, whilst still persisting with Skipp next to Coventry. It might sound like I have something against Skipp, but he gives me ZERO impression that in a cold December game he will have any real motivation to do anything but play backwards passes and/or care what happens to us. Fwiw, I think Mwamba would play his socks off to try to make a difference.
Ultimately, I think the point is relatively moot. I don't think NJ is brave enough to do this in the home games, when I think it may well cost us if he isn't. I think that a lack of ability to score goals could be the major contributing factor if we were to go down. Shuffling the pack in every other forward position might look like he is trying to fix it, but until he drops this combination, we will continue to struggle in front of goal, regardless of who plays in the 4 forward positions.

My Wimbledon mate is baffled as to why we’re not using Nkeng as a wildcard for last 15 mins or so. (Appreciate he didn’t even make subs’ bench today)
The only game you thought he might get minutes off the bench was Cardiff, but no need in the other two.  He will play when he’s ready. We cannot keep relying on TC as our only pacey tricky winger for another season

Would’ve taken it this morning. Same old we look shakey at the back with 4 at the back and look toothless going forward with 3 at the back. Edwards looking sooo rusty and very league one, have a feeling it will take him a long time to get back to the level he was at.
Don't make me laugh, it's his first game back in best part of a year, give the lad a chance eh,...
Got nothing to do with giving a chance, it’s commenting on the match you watch.

He is so far off the pace it’s incredible he was put in to start. He looked rusty in his cameo at Cardiff and was well off it today. He hasn’t got match sharpness and was blowing out his arse from about 25 mins. He looks about 4 U21 games short of match fitness still.

No one is writing him off or not giving a chance, but he should not have been starting today.
I would have subbed him after 5 mins when he was getting absolutely roasted (and I “love” Edwards).

i find it worrying that cardiff have only won one match and that was thrashing of us.when we are off it we are terrible
