    Even though someone offered £7m?
Think you know what he meant, rather pedantic lately Fen😂
I just have this sense that people are writing Mbick off too soon. I'm perfectly willing to accept there's a chance he never makes it but I'm an optimist so I have faith that he will.

For the last 3 years we've had people saying they'd sell TC and then he starts the season well and all of a sudden everyone can see the talent. We've had people saying Leaburn would never make it and then he starts the season well, gets loads of praise but is now being criticised again. Last season loads of people were calling for Ibby Fullah to be our starting no 10 and now he can't get a start in L2. Loads of people thought Anderson wasn't good enough and I've seen a few people saying they wish he was in the squad now to replace Ouma/Skipp.

I feel like the conversation around our academy graduates is often far too extreme. They're either the next big thing who is going to change the world or a total flop. If TC and Leaburn have shown us anything, it's that we need to give them time. I trust the judgement of Brighton and Southampton's scouts more than anyone on here, me included. So let's give Mbick some time to actually bed in to the team and division before suggesting we should have sold him or questioning why he hasn't scored.
Can’t disagree with most of what you have said here, absolutely he should be given time, personally I don’t think it should be in our 1st team YET, as fans we all like to see certain things in players and judge them by that, like myself at the moment I just don’t get all the fuss and don’t see him suddenly banging in goals as Callum suggested yesterday, I’d be over the moon to be wrong, but there is a thing on here where someone puts they’re head above the parapet and all hell  let’s loose, none of us are right nor wrong all the time. I’m pretty sure a couple of you yesterday got what I was getting at but chose the pedantic (argument), I prefer to call it discussion as none of our opinions really overly matter on this type of discussion.
Look at TC and Leaburn, a year learning the championship and they are now looking like completely different players. Yes Mbick might not be brilliant in his appearances this season, but when he plays next season after a year of learning we will reap the rewards of this time now. He’s clearly got potential so he’s worth being patient with
Mate Im not disagreeing with your way of thinking, but I don’t see his contribution is enough at the moment to be blooding him in, in the championship, by all means sporadic appearances now he can’t go on loan for the foreseeable, Miles and TC had played a lot of league 1 games and had better prep for the step up, Mbick hasn’t and I think it shows. If he lives up to the hype fair play but it won’t be us reaping any reward next season. Ultimately it’s on NJ, if he truly believes in him then who are any of us to think we know better but it’s a risk if we see a lot of him and it ends up to the detriment of our championship survival because it’s relentless  and not the place to be experimenting with no obvious results from the player, which IMO we haven’t seen YET.

Tc played 101 league 1 games and 45 Championship games over 5 years before this season. Leaburn was 75 league 1 games and 38 in the Championship over a total of 4 years.

To grow as a club we need to be selling a player or two every so often for big fees - that’s £10/15m+ with a good chunk up front, not £5-7m made up of various clauses that we might not receive.

If we’re not prepared to give players like Mbick an opportunity it sends the message to academy players that when an offer from a big club comes in you should take it. That’s already a problem, we don’t need to add more weight to that argument.

Not every youngster needs 2/3 loans progressing up the leagues before they’re ready. With our budget the alternative for a squad striker is probably a journeyman or gambling on a young PL loanee. I’d rather give Mbick more game time than get a modern day Simon Church on £10k a week over a 2/3 year contract.

I do think the style of player he is doesn’t help him in terms of impressing and making an impact. As a big target man he needs to get up to speed so his touch, decision making, reading of the game up to Championship standard, and that doesn’t happen instantly.
Compare that to chucking on a young winger who’s immediately exciting with pace and trickery, or a player like Mwamba who’s more mobile than any of our other CMs and therefore stands out for offering something different (unlike Skipp who’s so similar to Coventry).

I get why some are unconvinced so think we’d be better off with the money, but if we don’t give our best youngsters game time there’s a cost to the academy’s reputation and the alternative isn’t likely to be the top quality striker we’d like, even with £3-5m coming in from a sale - Bristol City were rumoured to have paid a combined £8-9m on Ballard and Tolaj from L1 for example.

Curbs was good at integrating youngsters into to the team, also depends on the individual as to how well they get on, we’ve seen it hinder progress by chucking them in the deep end. I thought the loan was doing him good and another wouldn’t have done any harm, maybe a step up into league 1.And of course the owners need the appetite to reinvest.

Our style of play and and squad investment hold back the prospects. If TC hadnt played a huge % of his games out of position, he may have kicked on a year ago or earlier. We have a great accademy, but if I was a shit hot youngster, I wouldnt be too keen knowing my chances  would come but probably not give me the best chances of showing my abilities.

Even though I don't think he's set the world alight so far, I wholeheartedly agree with Fen and other commenters suggesting that in a few years, £5m will look a snip for Micah. What I keep coming back to with Mbick, is that you can see moments of real quality which our other forwards aren't capable of, his development at this stage is about displaying those moments with more consistency and having belief that he can play at this level. I think once his first goes in at champ level he could go on a real run
This is more or less where I am currently - Mbick has every single quality needed to be an excellent forward in due course, but he is not there yet - he may never quite pull it together or he may have a spell of form where it all just "clicks" and he never looks back.

There's also the fact that we have to be careful to try and balance bringing him on and helping him reach another level but without pressuring him or building him up as some wunderkind who will transform our season.

Exactly - £5m is fuck all in the championship. We need to be looking at TC and Mbick, plus maybe Mwamba and others is our way of progression up the championship money table. Sell a couple for £10m and suddenly we’ve got the money to seriously compete at this level

If TC continues his form this season he could be worth around that. Mbick is younger so a little behind, but if teams are bidding £7m based off what we’ve seen so far, imagine the bids when he’s developed a bit more

True that could happen, but I’m more inclined to trust the judgement of the managers, coaches, recruitment staff that have probably watched loads of academy/U21 games and all his games for Colchester, rather than Charlton fans who have decided he’s not making it based off 1 start and a few sub appearances

He has all of the characteristics to be a top, top striker and clearly other clubs (two with very good track records) think 5-7m could end up being a bargain. At 19 Kane was on loan at Norwich, with 3 appearances and no goals. It all boils down to whether he will sign a new, long term contract. If he won't, then we are never going to see that potential and we should probably cash in.

I imagine the potential (likely?) upside on £5m/£7m is why those offers came in and importantly for us it's why we're talking to him again, trying hard to get him to stay longer and reap as much of that upside as we can....

Before Nathan Jones came in 95% of people wanted TC either released or loaned out to L2, likewise lots of people were offering to drive him to Preston themselves this summer despite his “style of play” TC is where he not purely but owes Jones a lot.

Also when was the last time Charlton (by choice not poached) didn’t give a youngster a chance or limited them that went on to massively exceed and surpass us elsewhere. Last few years best I can think of is Elewere and it’s not like he’s an elite championship cb yet.

Charlton may not offer youngsters attacking football but building them physically mentally and nurturing them were a fantastic club at doing that

Funny you say that today - we released Jordan Zemura, one of Watford's goalscorers today. Has played in the Championship, PL and Serie A since we let him go, and internationally for Zimbabwe.

    Fortunately it's not happened often.

So was the £5m bid real?
With the benefit of hindsight, who wouldn't have taken it and then brought in a better quality central midfielder/#10?

Sometimes the short-term play for the benefit of the club is the smart thing to do.

With everything else going on around the club, I can only conclude that NJ wouldnt have seen a penny of it, and the money would have just gone towards running costs.

Because otherwise it was a truly ludicrous decision.

As usual we didn’t have enough of the ball for him to show what he can do.

Far to early to write him off.

From the little I have seen of him I think he is a very talented young man with a huge frame.  Won't know how good he is until he is 23+ I would guess but I can see why two teams have bid what they have given his ability and profile.

100% would have taken the offer no ifs no buts.

Depends if and how the money was spent.

Won't be with us. We'll cash in if there's still interest in Jan.
  • I am not sure I have seen anything in him that Daniel Kanu could not offer us. In fact, Kanu has the sharpness to get shots off, while Mbick appears slow and sluggish, which hurts me to say, but it is true for all to see.

Kanu has been struggling in L1 this season

What the same Kanu people wanted back because he scored a few for Walsall, the same Kanu that will never be good enough for championship football.🤷🏻‍♂️

He might come good and be worth more but we desperately needed the £7m this summer, and it was insane to not take it.

He'll go for a whole lot less when we're relegated and he's scored 0 goals all season.
