Saturday v Norwich: Skipp, Coventry, Both or Neither?

Skipp & Coventry alongside each other in the midfield clearly hasn’t been working.

What would you do if you were choosing the midfield on Saturday?

I would give Mwamba a go alongside Skipp..... we need somebody who can pass the ball forward before Chalobah is back.

The Cov/Skipp partnership needs to end immediately. Get Mwamba, Knibbs or Carey in there for either of them until Chalobah is back then see where we're at.

only one at a time. Coventry for me, as I reckon he the faster of the two.

Id have either (not both) with mwamba and carey both in front. We need some creativity / goals, but with players that can provide some defensive cover.
This would require bell/ramsay, dropping mac/mesik

Skipp shouldn’t play again this season after that performance Saturday.

Think Mwamba or Costello need to come in and start alongside one of Cov/Skipp. Maybe even have both Mwamba and Costello and play more 4-3-3 than 4-2-3-1

I'm incredibly excited for Coventry to be back on the Nathan Jones shitlist (as usually happens when he has to do the whole midfield on his own for a while) except this time without a Coady to replace him with and the consequent number of chances the next few opponents of ours will create. You'll notice Watford spent the last 30 minutes creating absolutely all manner of chances against us, and that their first goal came when Coventry went to ground to win a tackle, the ball broke to theirs, and he got to run at us while Coventry was on the ground. Cue Mwamba not knowing what to do and our defence backing off until he shot. So yeah, bring on the Coventry axe. It'll accelerate the Jones sacking. Maybe we'll get a new manager who, like Ireland's boss, realises you can play the bloke so long as he has people around him who show for the fucking thing
You can’t defend that Coventry performance. He’s been mostly good this season but that was by far his worst game for a while. Mwamba came on and played more line breaking passes in about 10 minutes than Coventry and Skipp did all of the first half. Mwamba didn’t seem to have a problem with people not showing for the ball

Did you not see him second half all over the place at fault for Watford goal …. You have to stick with Skipp and Coventry cause looked what happened without them .. …. The problem not the mid but further up the pitch …. All three should be dropped on Saturday if NJ true TJ his word ….. we will play 4231 on Saturday …….

Dont rate Coventry - he's a backwards and sideways merchant - Ray Wilkins of Championship.

    This.

And then Mwamba next to him. Better still Chalobah, if fit of course.

Then do something to get us front footed & bums off seats & play Nkeng on the right, TC on the left and Knibbs in the middle.

They both should start Saturday. Until Chalobah is back, they are the best pairing. Bring Mwamba on for Skipp, last 20.

Depends how Norwich line up, and what resources we have available. Here's their line up v Portsmouth. Maghoma came on for Slimane on 57 mins.

They are not confident going by comments on the pinkun

Personally would rather give them the 3 points and not have to go through with it.

Mwamba certainly brought some energy when he first came on even if it did fade after a bit. I say try Mwamba with both of them and if that doesn't work start Nkeng and Brooks in midfield because it surely can't get worse.

Norwich have lost 6 on the bounce - can see where they will break that record, we look devoid of ideas and generally pretty crap

Mwamba was much better with the ball, but worse defensively. Positionally he got caught out too much.

On Saturday Skipp was better than Coventry until the silly booking. Followed by the near second booking. He was subbed because he was likely to get sent off, not because he was the worst player out there.

It's a tough call, as none of our available midfielder conbinations are good enough to play in a 2. Maybe 4231 with Mwamba as the 10? Or Carey as the 10, but deeper then he usually is.

An argument for a Skipp-Mwamba pairing. His experience would be more helpful for talking Mwamba through the game

Flip a coin but only one should be allowed on the pitch at any one time, bit like goalkeepers

This is where I am as well. I don't think Mwamba looked ready to play in a holding 2, even if he is naturally a more holding player. Yes, he played the ball forward into feet, but he just got caught out positionally too much for me to play in a holding two.

I hate to be the one to say it, but I would stick with Skipp and Coventry and for me, the third in midfield is going to be crucial. I would personally bring Carey back in. He presses well, and can find pockets of space, even if his distribution isn't the best. He can also drive forward with the ball and score, plus he's good from dead balls (including long throws).

I think having that third in midfield and going back to a back four will make a big difference. We were out numbered in midfield on Saturday, which Jones didn't address until he brought Knibbs and Carey on.

Don't get me wrong, I don't love Skipp and Cov together, but I think they are currently our two best holding midfielders. And I do think having a natural 10 ahead of them, rather than Grant or no 10 (Saturday), will help ease some of their burden.

Exactly that both get run/passed by every game easily.

When Coventry was playing for Ireland over the international break he was spraying passes like a prime Claus Jensen,  back to Charlton and reverts to his usual sideways or backwards passing

Would personally make it a 433 instead of 4231. Play Coventry with Knibbs and Mwamba and give them equal responsibility to get forward and back.

Both aren’t defensively intelligent enough to play in a pivot, likewise they don’t really have the creative ability to affect the game in pockets of space you get as a a traditional 10

I fear what will happen in that 70 minutes you want Cov and Skipp together.

Do they call Cov & Skipp a 'double pivot' because they have the strength of two ballerinas, or because it's like watching a session of interpretative dance?

We are once again not blessed in the center of midfield and I'm not sure who you can put there to improve things. But it cannot be both of them.
